Valve This invention relates to a valve intended to be mounted on a container from which a liquid is to be ejected by internal pressure, for example, on a fire extinguisher or on aerosol containers.
In the case of such containers it is essential that the contents of the container be completely discharged without interruption, and therefore their valves usually either use a locking device to hold the solupape in the open position or are provided. a diaphragm rupture device.
The use of a locking device is not entirely satisfactory because it is possible either to pull the valve back and bring it back to its closed position, or to start operation without the valve being locked by. open position. Diaphragm rupture devices, too, are not entirely satisfactory because rupture of the diaphragm can block the discharge channel. An object of the present invention is to provide a valve in which these drawbacks are avoided.
According to the invention, in the valve designed to be mounted on a container from which liquid is to be ejected by internal pressure, a rod extends through a sealing member, into a chamber formed in a sealed valve body. at one end by the sealing member, this valve being provided with a tubular part extending from the bottom of the body and having a borehole:
therethrough, which communicates with said chamber, said rod slidable axially in the body and having a longitudinal passage extending to the ex terrieu.re end thereof and an opening which extends through its wall lateral at its inner end.
This valve is characterized in that the inner end of the rod is arranged to be guided in its movement by the ribs extending upwards from the bottom of the body, in that the opening at the bottom of the rod is normally located in the body, above the ribs, and in that the opening is closed by a sleeve frictionally engaged around the rod and able to engage the ribs so that, during an axial displacement of the stem towards the bottom of the body, the sleeve slides along the stem to uncover the opening permanently.
In a particular embodiment of the invention, the rod has a closed inner end and said opening is located near the closed inner end. In another form of execution, the sleeve has its inner end closed by a diaphragm and the shank has its inner end open and provided with a sharp edge which, upon displacement of the shank towards the bottom of the body , pierces the diaphragm to allow the flow of liquid.
The shank may be provided with a shoulder to determine the extent of displacement through the sleeve.
The valve may include a dispensing button mounted on the outer end of the stem, said button possibly having a dispensing orifice communicating with an expansion chamber which, in turn, communicates with said passage in the stem.
The attached drawing illustrates, by way of example, two embodiments of the valve according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a section along the appropriate I-I of FIG. 2 and shows the first embodiment of the valve.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1. The fis. 3 is a view similar to that of fis. 1 but showing parts in positions different from these.
The fis. 4 is a section similar to that of the fis. 1 but represents a modified form of the pope.
The fis. 5 is a view similar to that of fis. 4 but showing parts in positions different from these.
Referring to fis. 1 to 3, the valve comprises a body 1 having an open chamber at the top 2 closed by an elastic sealing member -of iron 3 and which is provided with a bottom 4 opening into an outlet bore 5 formed by n a tubular part 6 of the body. Part 6 can be arranged to receive a dip tube 7 and be provided with a lug 8 to hold the dip tube in position.
The sealing member 3 is held in place by a cap-shaped element 9 by means of which the valve is fixed: on a container. The cap-shaped element 9 may be similar to the element 5 described in British Patent No. 832507. Ribs 10 extend upwards from the bottom 4 and have edges 11 formed in the extension of the borehole 5.
A rod 12 extends through the sealing member 3 and has an inner end 13 which can run smoothly between the edges 11 of the ribs 10 to guide the rod in axial movement relative to the body 1.
The rod has a part provided with a groove 14 sealingly engaged with the sealing member 3, a longitudinal passage 15 which extends to the outer end of the rod, and an opening 17 which is located at near the inner end 13 of the rod and extends from the passage 15 through the side of the rod to a position inside the chamber 2 and adjacent to the tops 18 of the ribs 10.
A sleeve 19 is engaged in friction around the rod and closes the opening 17. The sleeve is also disposed relative to the bottom 4 of the chamber 2, for example it engages the bottom, so that, during a displacement axial of the rod to bring the inner end 13 closer to the bottom 4, the rod is pushed through the sleeve 19 by the cooperation of the sleeve chon with the tops 18 of the ribs 10, so as to expose the opening 17 permanently and allow the flow of oil from the borehole into and out of passage 15 in the rod when the valve is mounted on a filled container. The rod 12 is provided with a shoulder 20 to determine the extent of displacement of the rod through the sleeve, fis. 2.
When the valve is intended to be mounted on an aerosol container, it may include a dispenser button 21, of known construction, which has a dispenser orifice 22 communicating with an expansion chamber 23 which, when it coughs, communicates. with the passage 15 in the rod 12.
The normal position of the sleeve 19 is that shown at the end. 1 and in this position, because it closes the opening 17, when the valve is mounted on a container the contents cannot escape from the container. To effect the release of the contents of the container, the rod 12 is moved axially, fis. 3, towards the bottom 4, and this has the effect that the rod slides in the sleeve 19 until any sudden movement is stopped by the shoulder 20. The opening 17 is thus uncovered and the contents of the container are removed. 'flows through the outlet bore 5 into chamber 2 and from there, through opening 17, into passage 15.
When the rod is pushed in, the elastic sealing member 3 is moved inside the chamber, as shown in the figure. 3, and when the axial pressure exerted on the rod is released, the rod tends to return to its starting position, as a result of the elasticity of the sealing member 3 and of the pressure prevailing in the container.
However, when the rod: has been de- placed through the sleeve, the latter can no longer return to its initial position because of the friction between the latter and the rod, and it will be understood by therefore, the opening 17 remains uncovered - permanently - so that the contents of the container are distributed in full as soon as the opening 17 has been discovered- . If the rod does not return to its starting position, the discharge will nevertheless continue because the contents of the container flow out of the borehole 5 and between the ribs 10.
Thus, even if the opening 17 were located at a point below the tops 18 of the ribs, the contents will flow through the opening.
The embodiment of the valve, shown in fig. 4 and 5, is similar to that described above, except that the rod 12 has an open inner end and is provided with a cutting edge 24, and the opening 17 is partly contiguous with the open end of the rod , and that the sleeve 19 is provided at its inner end with a diaphragm 25.
The sides and diaphragm of the sleeve normally close the opening 17 and the inner end of the rod, but upon axial displacement of the rod towards the bottom 4, the sharp edge 24 breaks the diaphragm 25, as shown. did it. 5, thereby uncovering the opening 17 so that the contents of the container flow through the outlet bore 5 into the chamber 2 and from there through the opening 17 and the passage 15, as shown by the arrows 26, done. 5.
One side of the inner end of the rod 12 is provided with a rounded portion 27 to prevent the diaphragm 25 from being fully detached from the sleeve 19 as shown. 5.
