Description

 la fig. 1 est une vue en perspective d'un récipient moulé et marqué;
 la fig. 2 est une vue schématique en perspective d'une moitié de moule et des moyens d'extrusion et d'insufflation et de marquage;
 la fig. 3 est une vue de détail en perspective d'une pièce d'insertion mobile d'impression ou marquage, pour le moule;

Process of marking plastic objects during molding
The present invention relates to a method for marking plastic objects during molding.

Marking of plastic objects is widely practiced. For example, blow-molded plastic containers are used in large numbers for the packaging of many kinds of goods, for example liquid household detergents, and generally such a container should show indications of its use. content printed externally. Such indications may include a trademark, description of contents, instructions for use, name of manufacturer, etc.

A popular method for marking plastic objects is to remove the object from the molding machine, transfer it to a printing device, which can be moved away from the molding machine, and then print on the. object.

Other different methods of printing on plastic containers are known; for example printing by hand or by jet; silk screen; and the marking with hot sensitive tape or by foil.

Various difficulties and complications arise: in painting by hand, or by jet, the vignettes must be prepared with care, moreover they require complete cleaning; for the use of the silk screen the surface of the container may not be smooth enough; for embossing, the uneven thickness of the walls of the container can cause difficulties and furthermore, it is not always convenient or possible to introduce into the container a cleat against which the repeller can be pressed. Another difficulty arises from the fact that certain printing methods require that the surface of the container be treated beforehand in order for good adhesion to be ensured, particularly in the case of polyolefin plastics.

The aim of the invention is, on the one hand, to improve the marking of plastic objects by giving the marking a more permanent character than it usually has, and on the other hand, to simplify, accelerate and render cheaper manufacture of plastic objects.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that one successively introduces into the mold a marking composition, comprising a marking agent and a vehicle, and hot plastic material, the latter being injected under pressure into the mold and causing, when it comes into contact with the marking composition, the liquefaction, vaporization or sublimation of its vehicle and the penetration of the marking agent into a surface area of the plastic material. The marking agent can be a dye or a pigment, and it should be capable of being incorporated into the base so as to form the marking vehicle, which can therefore be regarded as an ink. The labeling agent may be either miscible with the base, or soluble therein, or be able to be suspended therein.

If the marking agent is a dye, it is preferably soluble in the base material; if it is a pigment, the particle size of the pigment should be small enough to allow the pigment to penetrate the surface area of the plastic. It has been observed that soluble dyes give deeper penetrations than pigments. However, the pigments give quite satisfactory results and finely pulverized or colloidal pigments can be used. Finely pulverized metal powders and pearl pastes can also be used as marking agents. Finely powdered aluminum is an example of a suitable metal powder.

The pearl paste consists of finely ground oyster shells. Finely sprayed in this case means a particle size not exceeding ten microns.

If desired, the marking agent can include an additive to increase its brightness. Suitable ultraviolet light absorbing additives are, for example, a benzophenone or a benzotriazole. The marking vehicle may consist of more than one color and it is possible to make multi-color prints or decorations. Thus a carrier tape can be brought into contact with several successive rollers transferring various colors onto the tape which will then be used for marking.

For the base, various materials, depending on the plastic material of the object, can be used, for example waxes, plasticizers and resins. Suitable waxes or resins are: low molecular weight polyethylene; waxes known in the trade as sasol wax, Carnauba wax, Fischer-Tropsch wax; polyethylene glycol, a natural wax such as candle wax; a polyamide resin; a vinyl resin; cellulose acetate resin, etc. Dimethyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate are suitable plasticizers. Various solvents can be added to the base to aid in the incorporation of the marking agent and to achieve the desired consistency for printing and decoration.

Mention may be made, as examples, of: xylene; toluene; isopropyl alcohol; methylene chloride; naphthalene derivatives, etc.

It is essential that the marking agent and the base material are chosen such that when they are mixed or combined to form the marking vehicle, the latter is compatible with the plastic material employed. Thus, the marking vehicle must be such that it combines, or mixes with the plastic, and it must not be repelled from it. For example, if an object is molded from nylon, then a compatible base will be a polyamide resin; if it is made of cellulose acetate or propionic resin, a compatible base will then be a cellulose acetate resin.

When subjected to heat and pressure in contact with the plastic material during the molding of an object, the marking vehicle, depending on its nature, will liquefy, vaporize, or sublimate, so that the marking agent is absorbed by the plastic. In other words, the marking agent will penetrate into a surface area of the plastic. This penetration can reach 0.4 mm, this depth of penetration into the polyethylene has been measured during experiments. Because the marking agent penetrates this way, it is an integral part of the plastic and when the marked object cools and sets, the marking is permanent for all common uses, and can only be removed. by prolonged contact with a solvent.

The nature of the penetrating action is not fully understood: in some cases a chemical combination can be achieved; in other cases the marking agent penetrates into the intermolecular spaces of the plastic. Thus, the degree of penetration achieved depends on a number of factors, for example the molecular structure of the plastic, the nature of the labeling vehicle, and the prevailing heat and pressure conditions when the vehicle marking is in contact with the plastic.

This marking process can be incorporated into any molding process where hot plastic comes into contact with the walls of a mold.

Thus, the process can, for example, be employed in injection molding, compression molding, pneumatic molding, extrusion molding, vacuum forming, sheet forming, centrifugal melting.

The marking vehicle may be placed on an incompatible support (i.e. a support which will be moved away from the plastic material used). Such a support can be a strip, a coating or a sheet.

It could also be a movable or movable part of a molding instrument, the marking vehicle being applied to this part superficially. Alternatively, the marking vehicle could be sent, or fed, through a gauze screen for printing, to the surface of the mold, from a reservoir. In another variant, the marking vehicle could be placed on a compatible support, for example a strip, a coating, or a sheet of material compatible with the plastic material, which under the effect of heat and pressure melts and becomes part of the plastic.

For injection molding it is preferable to employ an incompatible carrier for the marking vehicle, which, when printed or marked on the carrier, is covered, for example, by a thin sheet of a compatible plastic. This sheet protects the marking vehicle from smearing as the plastic advances through the mold. The sheet then melts with the injected plastic and the heat and pressure cause the marking agent to penetrate the sheet and the plastic. A carrier loaded with the marking vehicle could be held by suction against a surface of the molding apparatus.

A marking vehicle support must be capable of being printed or otherwise marked by the marking vehicle; it must be inert towards the marking agent, the base, and the plastic. Thus, if the plastic material is polyethylene, a support can be a polyester film. Examples of suitable supports that may be mentioned include: metal sheets or bands; glossy paper; plastic wrap; cellulose films, for example Cellophane. A strip medium could be fed from a spool, or could be fed to the mold during successive molding operations, as separate, marked or printed strips or pieces of support material.

The marking vehicle can be employed for printing or marking on an article, but more than one impression can be achieved, for example, by applying the marking vehicle heavily to a support and driving the temperature and temperature conditions. pressure, so that on the first impression only part of the marking vehicle is used. Conducting the temperature conditions may include cooling after the initial heating, so as to limit the depth of penetration of the marking agent.

The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
 fig. 1 is a perspective view of a molded and marked container;
 fig. 2 is a schematic perspective view of a mold half and the extrusion and blowing and marking means;
 fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of a movable printing or marking insert for the mold;
fig. 4 is an enlarged section of part of the half-mold, along a plane IV-IV of FIG. 2
fig. 5 is an enlarged section through the movable printing or marking insert, taken on a V-V plane of FIG. 3.

The process now described in detail is an insufflation molding process whereby a container having a flat side is made by extruding a thermoplastic parison or blank between the two half-molds. When a sufficient length of parison has been extruded, the half-molds are closed and air is blown into the parison in order to distribute the resilient material on the interior walls of the mold.

Fig. 1 shows an insufflation molded container 1. The line of separation of the half-molds is indicated at 2. The container 1 has a portion of its surface 3 surrounded by a rectangular depression 4.

On the surface portion 3 is made an impression 5. Obviously, the printing in letters could be replaced by any design or decoration of your choice. It is also believed that the invisible side of the container 1 is shaped and printed in a similar manner.

The fg. 2 schematically shows an extrusion tube 6 and a nozzle, or mandrel, for blowing air 7. It also shows a half-mold 8. (The complementary half-mold has been deleted for clarity.) -mould 8 has a molding cavity 9 and projecting side parts 10A and 10B.

A groove 1 1 receives an air insufflation nozzle 7.

In fig. 4 a cross section shows the protruding side part 1 OA; the protruding side part 10B is similar.

The protrusion 10B internally contains an insert for printing 12. A similar insert is mounted in the protrusion 10A but in FIG. 2 it was deleted for clarity. The insert 12 is visible in fig. 3 and 5.

The protruding parts 10A and 10B each have two retaining grooves 13 of the inserts and each groove has a shoulder 13A. Each insert is held against a face 14 of the half-mold 8 by two buttons 15, formed at the end of two pins 16 projecting on the rear face of the insert 12, which buttons engage behind. the shoulders 13A (see fig. 2 and 4). The face 14 is formed in a hollow 17 on each side of the half-mold 8, these hollows 17 receiving the insert pieces 12.

Each insert 12 has a handle 18 by which it can be withdrawn or introduced into the half-mold 8, between the molding operations.

As shown in fig. 4, each projecting part 1 OA, 10B, has a duct 19 which connects a tube 20 with the hollow 17. Screwed into the duct 19 is a sleeve 21, a frustoconical surface 21A of which forms a seat for a ball 22 pressed against it. by a helical compression spring 23, the other end of which abuts against a shoulder 23A. The tube 20 has a flanged end 20A and is fixed to the inlet of the sleeve 21, since the flanged end 20A is held by a nut 24 screwed onto the sleeve 21. By this device air can be removed. be sent to hollow 17 if desired, as will be discussed below.

The purpose of the printing insert 12 is to provide a movable support for the marking vehicle employed in performing the printing 5. When the insert 12 is removed from the mold half, the marking vehicle is printed, or otherwise: marked, on a sheet supported on gauze (which will be described) mounted in the insert. The insert is then replaced for the molding operation.

According to fig. 3 and 5, the insert 12 comprises a body 12A, of which the handle 18 is a part. Body 12A has one protruding edge 25 and another protruding edge 26 which is grooved from below at 26A (see Fig. 5). These protruding edges produce, during molding, the long sides of the depression 4, as can be seen in FIGS. 1 and 2. The shorter sides of the depression 4 are molded by two plates 27, each mounted on two pins 27A sliding into the holes 28 of the body 12A. The pins 27A have integral stops 29 for compression springs 30 carried by the pins 27A, this device having the effect of pulling back the plates 27 against the body 12A. In fig. 3 one of the plates 27 is shown pulled out, in opposition to the springs 30.

A rectangular sheet of metallic gauze 31 (preferably 50 meshes per linear centimeter, in phosphor bronze) is introduced into the internal groove 26A and under the plates 27, to be held in place against the body 12A. (The gauze sheet has been omitted in Figs. 1 and 2 for clarity.) Two rows of holes 32 are drilled in the body 12A so that the gauze sheet 31 is in communication with a low depression 33 to the rear of the body 12A, the depression 33 being, when the insert is in place for the molding, in communication with the duct 19.

A molding operation, employing the apparatus described above, is carried out as follows:
With the half-molds separated, the printing inserts 12 are removed, the marking vehicle is applied to each gauze 31 as necessary for the printing, or other marking, to be applied to the container to be molded. The inserts 12 are replaced in the housings 17, so that the buttons 15 engage behind the shoulders 13A. There is sufficient space in the retaining grooves 13 to accommodate the pins 27A and their stops 29 with the springs 30 fully relaxed, for the webs 27 to hold the metal gauzes 31 in the print inserts 12.

A sufficient length of parison is introduced into the mold, the latter is closed and air is blown through the nozzle 7. This brings the hot and soft parison, clamped by the groove 1 1 around the nozzle 7, to s 'expand inside the mold. The expansion of the parison compresses the air trapped in the mold. The trapped air cannot escape through the pipe 20, which is closed by the ball valve 22 bearing against the frustoconical surface 21A.

The compression of the air is thus established in the zone of the gauze 31 which carries the marking vehicle, creating a heating, so that when the hot and soft plastic, being expanded due to the air blown through the nozzle 7, reaches the gauze 31, it is pressed against the gauze marking vehicle, and the marking agent is absorbed and penetrates into the plastic. The same happens on the other side of the half-mold.

Various molding methods can be employed. Thus, the extrusion of the parison can be intermittent or continuous. The air inlet nozzle can be fixed or mobile, etc. Although the printing, or marking, on both sides of the container 1 has been described above, it is evident that the half-mold could be made to receive only an insert 12, for printing on one side only. .

Although the process described above requires the removal and noting of the inserts 12 at each molding operation, it is possible to mark or print the containers during successive molding operations, while employing the apparatus described. This is done by controlling the temperature and pressure conditions. Thus, during the first molding operation, and by employing the process described above, the duration of the marking operation is reduced, by blowing cold air through the tube 20, beyond of the valve 22, through the holes 19, the recess 33, the holes 32 and the metallic gauze 31. This cools the marking vehicle in contact with the blown plastic material, and prevents it from being completely absorbed by the material. plastic.

In this way, part of the marking vehicle can be retained to mark another container, or containers, in subsequent molding operations.

The above described apparatus uses a movable insert for printing. Other types are possible. Thus a part of the half-mold itself can be swung around a pivot out of the molding position in order to be placed in the marking or printing position. Alternatively, a continuous strip carrier can be passed in and out of the mold in successive stages, each corresponding to a molded container. In another embodiment a reservoir for the marking vehicle may be incorporated into the frame of the mold, the reservoir being in communication with the printing, or marking gauze, of the type described above.

Likewise, a wall of the mold could be provided with an opening for receiving a sheet of gauze, behind which there would be a plate having holes corresponding by their shape to the desired printing or marking. Behind this plate there would be a tank for the marking vehicle. After each molding operation, or after each of the operations in a series, pressure would be applied to the marking vehicle in the tank, to force the vehicle through the drawn holes, in order to reline the plate with the gauze for an operation, or a series of subsequent operations.

In case this marking process is used during injection molding, it is necessary to prevent staining or smearing of the marking vehicle on the support (e.g. a plate with gauze), as the plastic injected advance into the mold. For this purpose, the marking vehicle is protected by a thin covering of compatible material, for example a polyethylene film.

This film is absorbed with the marking vehicle during the molding operation.

By way of example, the marking vehicle for use in the molding of polyethylene ngide containers can have the following composition:
Marking agent:
red wax dye: 50 parts by weight.

  Based:
wax or paraffin known commercially as
the name Sasol: 10 parts by weight.

  Solvent:
naphthalene solvent marketed under the name
of White Spiritualist or Sangayol>: 50 parts
 in weight.

  Diluent:
 toluene: 15 parts by weight.

  Plasticizer:
   dibutylphthalate: 3 parts by weight.

For low density polyethylene, the Sasol wax would be replaced by wax known commercially under the name Car nauba wax or a hard polyethylene wax.

Other marking agents can be for example: solid polyvinyl red, red tint for nylon, phthalocyanine, and in general any fatty dye soluble in organic solvents.

As marking agents satisfactory pigments are cadmium red and aluminum powder. When preparing a marking vehicle, employing a pigment in place of a dye, it is usually found necessary to increase the wax content to achieve the consistency required for printing.
