Description

B. in Barrenmitte durchzubrechen droht.

       Fig.2    ist eine Ansicht der verstellbaren     Metall-          zuführungsvorrichtung,        Fig.    3 eine Draufsicht,     Fig.    4  ein Längsschnitt durch den Schwimmer nach der  LinieA -A von     Fig.    5 und     Fig.    5 eine Draufsicht auf  den Schwimmer;

Method for the vertical continuous casting of non-ferrous metals The present invention relates to a method for the vertical continuous casting (sinking casting) of non-ferrous metals, especially aluminum and aluminum alloys, using a float in the liquid casting head that cooperates with one or more inflow nozzles as a valve for automatic control of the metal feed.

Particularly when continuously casting aluminum or aluminum alloy billets and extrusion billets, the experts try to obtain the smoothest possible surface and the thinnest possible columnar crystal layer on the circumference of the strand, which primarily requires intensive cooling of the strand produced. The thickness of the in particular on rolling ingots by machining treatment, z. B. by milling, layer to be removed (edge zone) and consequently the chip waste should be reduced to a minimum.

In the case of metal of so-called anodizing quality, i.e. H. which can be anodically oxidized in the form of sheets or profiles without streaks, stains and the like appearing during anodizing, it is also very desirable that when removing the edge zone, the area of the stem crystal zone after as little deep processing as possible is definitely eliminated.

The goal can e.g. B. by a high casting speed, d. H. by a high lowering speed of the resulting strand, or by casting with a low meniscus in the mold, d. H. with a low metal height in this.

Casting at a high lowering speed easily leads to the strand breaking, especially if it is a rolling billet. This mode of operation can therefore only be used to a limited extent, namely with strands of relatively small cross-sectional dimensions, e.g. B. of bars or plates.

When casting with a low meniscus, however, there is no risk of tearing, even if it is for example aluminum billets with a cross section of 800 X 150 mm and above.

As tests have shown, when sinking ingots with a cross-section of 800 x 150 mm and above, as well as extrusion billets (round bars) with a diameter of 200 mm and above, the meniscus height of less than 50 to 60 mm is maintained in the usual way to great difficulties because the distance between the float and the approach floor, which closes the bottom mold at the beginning, is too small and the float threatens to freeze over in the solidifying metal.

The invention is based on the knowledge that when lowering pouring using a valve float in the liquid pouring head when pouring, different pouring conditions must be observed than when pouring, if you z. For example, in the case of billets, the aim is to obtain the smoothest possible surface and an only thin edge zone with columnar crystals in a simple and safe way.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that, when starting up, the feed nozzle or nozzles and the float that interacts with them are set so high above the lower edge of the mold that the molten metal fed in rises to a height in the mold closed at the bottom by the approach floor in which there is no risk of the float freezing in the solidifying molten metal, and that shortly after the start of the lowering of the approach floor and the resulting metal strand, the nozzle resp.

Nozzles set to a height that is more than 10 mm lower, which causes the float and the meniscus to be lowered to the lower height desired for further pouring. For example, when continuously casting aluminum billets with a large cross-section, a meniscus height of 60 to 80 mm can be approached without difficulty and casting can continue with a meniscus height of 25 to 40 mm.

Up to now, the lowest meniscus height was around 50 to 60 mm when casting aluminum billets with a large cross section. The outlet end of the feed nozzle or the feed nozzles was at a level just above it. At the beginning of the casting operation, the Ko kille was quickly filled to 50 to 60 mm with the molten metal until the float closed the nozzle or nozzles.

As soon as the solidification of the molten metal had progressed sufficiently, the lowering of the start-up floor and, as a result, the resulting rolling ingot at the intended speed, began; the height of the nozzles and, consequently, the meniscus was not changed.

With a meniscus height of 50 to 60 mm, however, it is not possible to achieve optimal rapid solidification; the surface has transverse ribs, cold welds, etc., and the edge zone with columnar crystals is quite thick, so that under these circumstances it is practically impossible to cast an aluminum billet that can roll perfectly without machining the broad sides leaves.

Thanks to the method according to the invention, rolling ingots and extrusion billets made of aluminum and aluminum alloy (for example from AlMn and low-alloy AlMg) with a smooth surface can be cast, because it is possible to work with a very deep meniscus.

The aluminum billets can be rolled into sheets of anodized quality, as the columnar crystal zone is thin and even and can therefore be removed with certainty at a relatively low milling depth.

A further advantage of the method according to the invention is that the casting temperature range can be selected to be wider than before without cold weld points or thicker columnar crystal zones occurring. Bein Reinaluniinium you can z. B. expand the casting temperature range upwards by about 10 C and downwards by 10 to 15 C, which corresponds to a doubling of the range.

Even with AIMn and low-alloy AlMg, a smoother surface is noticeable due to a marked reduction in sweating.

In the continuous casting of rolling ingots, the method according to the invention can be supplemented by regulating the cooling of the narrow sides and the broad sides in such a way that an almost rectangular sump is created. In this way, the thickness of the solidification crust within the mold is largely the same on the broad sides of those on the narrow sides of the strand, with a small rounding at the corners.

These relationships are illustrated by FIG. 1, which shows a schematic plan view of a bar mold with the omission of the feed device. With 10 the mold is designated and with 11 the edge of the liquid metal sump just below the metal level in the conventional strand cast. As can be seen, the metal melt solidifies much more quickly at the four corners than at the middle of the broad and narrow sides. One speaks of cold running corners. There is quite a lot of cold sweat there.

The dashed line 12 shows the edge of the metal sump in the method according to the invention with adaptation of the cooling. The swamp is almost rectangular, so that the four edges of the bar run out well; Premature cold welding on the narrow sides of the ingot is prevented, and the cone can be lowered to about 35 mm from the underside of the mold without the melt z. B. threatens to break through in the middle of the bar.

The cooling device of the narrow sides is best carried out separately from that of the broad sides. Advantageously, the different cooling is additionally supported by different distances and different sizes of the injection holes on the broad sides of the mold.

FIGS. 2 to 14 show a device that has proven itself well for carrying out the method according to the invention and, schematically, an apparatus intended for multiple strand casting.

       FIG. 2 is a view of the adjustable metal feed device, FIG. 3 is a plan view, FIG. 4 is a longitudinal section through the float along the line   A   of FIG. 5 and FIG. 5 is a plan view of the float;

6, 7 and 8 show details of the lifting device in different positions, FIG. 9 a top view of the rolling ingot mold, FIG. 10 a longitudinal section along the line BB of FIG. 9 and FIG. 11 a cross section along the line CC of FIG 9.

FIGS. 12 to 14 show schematically in a view (partly in section) or in a plan view a lowering device for multiple strand casting or the hydraulic scheme.

The feed device 13 in FIGS. 2 and 3 rests on the narrow sides 16 of the rolling ingot mold 17 by means of the cranked beam 14 and the lifting device 15. The narrow sides 16 are shown in section in FIGS. 2 and 10. With 18 the broad sides of the mold are designated. 20 is the approach floor, which is verbun with the lowering piston 21 the. The internal dimensions of the mold according to the example are 1020 and 265 mm, so that rolling ingots of approx. 1000 × 260 mm are cast.

The inner wall 19 is smooth here (but can also be grooved vertically) and has a height of 115 mm.

The actual metal feed consists on the one hand of the gray cast iron cup 22, which is coated on the inside with a mold coating and which is charged with the molten metal via the inflow channel 23 and has two outflow nozzles 24, and on the other hand of the float 25 with raised points 26 (impact plates), which the metal inflow regulate in cooperation with the nozzles 24 and close the latter when the metal level in the mold reaches the fixed maximum level.

When starting up, the inflow channel 23 is expediently arranged horizontally so that it does not come to lie too steeply after the pouring cup 22 has been lowered.

With its ends 27, the float rests on the support brackets 28, which are connected by the intermediate pieces 29 to the cranked beam 14 by a screw bolt 30 with a nut. Thanks to the slots 31, the Zwischenele elements 29 and consequently the angle 28 can be adjusted in height.

The construction and the mode of operation of the lifting device 15 can best be explained with reference to FIGS. 6, 7 and 8.

By actuating the lever 32, the cure venscheiben (eccentric disks) 33 are set in rotation, whereby the support 37 of the cranked beam 14 is raised or lowered via the rollers 34, the carrier 35 and the table 36. The sleeves 38, which are firmly connected to the table 36, and the bolts 39 serve to guide the table 36 and the support 37. The lowering of the feed device 13 must, of course, be carried out evenly on both sides. This is achieved by means of the locking device 40 which cooperates with a series of holes 41 forming a kind of scale.

Before actuating the lever 32, the lever 42 is pressed, whereby the pointed. of the bolt 43 is pulled out of the hole 41 in which it is currently seated. After reaching the desired position, the lever 42 is released and the tip of the bolt 43 is inserted under the pressure of the coil spring 44 into the corresponding hole 41 and the lever 32 is locked.

In the mold shown in FIGS. 2, 3, 9 to 11, the broad sides 18 consist of an extruded hollow profile made of AlMgSi; the cooling water is fed through the connections 45 to the cavity 46 and leaves it through the bores 47, which spray the cooling water against the broad sides of the strand exiting. The water connection on both sides creates a backlog in the middle, which results in a pressure increase and thus greater cooling in the middle. In addition, no holes are attached at both ends of the hollow profiles 18 against the narrow sides to 21/2 / o of the length of the broad sides.

The first holes towards the center have a diameter of 2 mm on both sides for 8% of the length of the hollow profile, the other holes (in the middle part of the hollow profile) have a diameter of 2.5 mm. The narrow sides 16 of the mold are designed as L-profiles and cast from AlMgSi 5 ge. They are cooled by the spray tubes 48.

These have two rows of spray holes which are arranged in such a way that the cooling water is sprayed onto the L-profile on the one hand (indirect cooling) and, on the other hand, just below the edge of the mold onto the emerging rolling ingot (direct cooling). The cooling water is fed in through connection 49. A valve 50 allows the regulation of the cooling water supply.

The narrow and broad sides of the mold are screwed and pinned together. The inner sides 19 are machined smooth. 51 are fastening tabs.

The float according to FIGS. 4 and 5 is designed so that the metal emerges horizontally against the narrow sides. It consists of 1.5 mm thick black plate and is coated with a mold finish.

Before starting pouring with the apparatus shown in FIGS. 2 to 11, the pouring cup 22 and the pouring channel 23 are removed and the float 25 is removed by moving the support bracket 28 to the distance between the pouring nozzles 24 and the baffle plates 25 required for pouring regulated. The lifting devices 15 are brought into the upper position by means of eccentric disks 33. As already mentioned, the casting must be carried out in the sewing of the mold bottom with a high meniscus in order to prevent the float from freezing.

As soon as the float has detached itself from the support brackets 28 and thus plays freely, the starting head 20 and lowering piston 21 can be lowered. After the billet has emerged by about 5 cm, the feed device 13 (which consists of the pouring cup 22 and the float 25) can be slowly lowered until the desired meniscus height is reached for further pouring. The lowering must take place evenly, which can easily be done with the help of the perforated scale 41. When the desired meniscus is reached, the lever 32 is locked.

At the end of pouring, the regulating device must be raised again so that it cannot freeze. This is done in one go with the aid of levers 32, which enable the float to be lifted out of the liquid pouring head. As a result of the lifting, the residual melt remaining in the channel 23 is returned to the furnace or the crucible.

When casting multiple strands, the apparatus shown in Figures 2 and 3 has the disadvantage that you have to regulate at four, six or more points. This disadvantage is avoided by using the regulating device according to FIGS. 12-14. This is placed directly on the frame 52 of the continuous casting machine. The various metal feed devices 13 rest on a single regulating frame 53 made of angle iron, which is raised and lowered with the aid of four hydraulically operated pistons 54 running in cylinders 55. The stroke is 100 mm, for example.

By means of a pump 65 (a hand pump is sufficient), the pistons 54 are raised synchronously via a synchronizing valve 57. The lowering takes place by loading the pistons 54 and controlling the oil return into the oil reservoir 58 by the regulating valve 59. The regulating frame 53 can in this way be controlled from a single location and fixed at any desired height.

There are of course other Vorrich lines for lowering the metal supply and consequently the meniscus when starting possible. The mold can also be constructed differently than in the example described.

Usually the strand is lowered in water, whereby the water level can be brought up to about 10 cm to the lower edge of the mold. Of course, other coolants than water are possible. In addition, atomized water can be used for direct cooling of the strand.
