Process for depositing a layer of a substance on a membrane
and device for implementing the method
The present invention relates to a method for depositing on a membrane a layer of a substance by evaporation of a solution of this substance, as well as a device for implementing the method.
The invention can be applied in particular to the deposition of a radioactive substance on a membrane with a view to measuring the a and ss emission.
In this case, the membrane should be as thin as possible in order to decrease backscattering and absorption of this membrane. The latter is usually made of plastic and is, for example, a metallized polyterephthalate membrane, the edges of which are held between two rings nested one inside the other to form a cup. The drawbacks of this device are that it only admits a very small volume of solution and requires absolute horizontality of the membrane to ensure suitable distribution.
The object of the invention is to make it possible to significantly increase the volume of solution that it is possible to evaporate on a membrane of given dimensions and is particularly advantageous when the deposit is formed by evaporation of solutions endowed with a low surface tension. preventing the formation of a fixed drop.
To this end, the method according to the invention is characterized in that the membrane is deposited on a support surface, part of which forms a concave wall, in that a vacuum is created in the space between the concave wall and the membrane to apply the latter Qastically to the concave wall, in that a dose of the solution is deposited in the deformed cup-forming part of the membrane, and in that the evaporation of the solution is caused. by circulating a gas above said cup, while maintaining a vacuum in the space between the concave wall of the receptacle and the membrane, until complete evaporation of the solution.
The device that the invention comprises is characterized in that it comprises a plate, rotating on a fixed pivot and provided with a series of support surfaces each having a part forming a concave wall, a vacuum chamber having the same axis as the pivot and communicating with a channel thereof, conduits connecting said chamber to each of the support surfaces so as to open into the concave wall portion thereof, a fixed casing covering a portion of the plate and means for circulating a gas in the space between the support surfaces and the casing to cause evaporation of the solution contained in the deformed portions forming cups of the membranes deposited on the support surfaces.
The following description of an embodiment of the device according to the invention is given by way of example.
The description refers to the single figure which accompanies it and which shows the evaporator in section along a plane passing through its axis.
Evaporator A comprises a frame consisting of a tank 2 supported by three feet 4. These feet are adjustable in height to ensure the verticality of a pivot 6 fixed to the tank 2. This pivot comprises a lower part of large diameter in which is drilled a blind bore 8 connected to the periphery of the pivot by radial ducts 10 and an upper part of small diameter 12 terminated by a threaded portion 14.
The pivot 6 is fixed to the tank 2 in a leaktight manner, for example by means of a shutter 16 having a threaded part 18 which engages in a corresponding threaded recess of the pivot 6. The connection is sealed by interposition. deformable washers 20 made of plastic, for example.
The shutter 16 is pierced with a duct 22 which extends the bore 8, opens into a nozzle 24 to which can be connected a pipe of a vacuum pump (not shown).
On the shoulder 26 which separates the upper and lower parts of the pivot 6 is mounted a ball bearing 28 which supports a rotating assembly in several parts 30. This assembly consists of a disc 32 which delimits with a bell 34, a space 36. On the disc 30 is fixed by welding a ring 38 integral with the movable ring of the bearing 28.
The disc 32 is pierced with a series of orifices 40, regularly distributed in an angular manner, in these orifices are mounted a series of bases 42 having an upper support surface at least partly concave and a fixing rod 44 passing through. the disc.
These bases are fixed by means of a nut 46 screwed onto the rod 44 and pressing the base against the disc.
The bottom of the concave part of the support surface of each base 42 is placed in communication by means of a flexible tube 50 with a corresponding tubing 48 mounted on the bell 34. Thus a connection is established between the vacuum pump and each base. by means of the nozzle 24, idu passage 22, the bore 8, the passages 10, the compartment 36, Id'une tubing 48, a pipe 50 and a bore 52 formed in the rod 44 .
Part of the disc 32 is covered by un.carter 54 in the shape of a cylinder truncated by a vertical partition 56. This housing has vertical walls separated from the disc by a clearance to allow suitable evaporation gas circulation.
This casing slips removably over the threaded end part 14 of the pivot 6 where it is held in place by a knurled nut '58.
Each base 42 is designed to receive a thin, flexible, deformable membrane 60 stretched over a frame B formed by hideous rings 62 and 64 which fit into each other and enclose the edge of the membrane.
The casing 54 is provided with a tubing 66 for connection with a suction pump designed to circulate the air between the disc and the casing following the path indicated by the arrows f and thus accelerate the evaporation of the liquid contained in the cups formed by the deformed parts of the membranes.
The operation of the device appears clearly on reading the preceding description and will therefore be described only briefly.
The device is first of all put in place and the three feet adjusted to ensure the verticality of the pivot 6. The pipe 24 is connected to a vacuum pump and the pipe 66 to a suction pump. These positioning operations can also be carried out in a hot cell if the activity of the solution to be evaporated justifies it.
A device for dispensing and possibly measuring the volume of the solution to be evaporated, which can be a micropipette, is also available near the evaporator and in line with the indented part of the casing 54. The vacuum pump and the suction pump are started. Under the action of the pressures which they undergo, the membranes 60 are pressed against the support surface of the bases 42, thus taking in part a concave shape forming a cup which offers a greater volume, one then pours into that Ides cups accessible by the 'indentation of the casing 54 a metered volume of solution to be evaporated, then the crew 30 is rotated by the angle necessary to bring the next cup under the dispensing device, this movement is carried out as appropriate, either manually or by hand. 'using a manipulator, or finally using a motor not shown.
As the cups are lined, the crew 30 rotates and the first cups pass into the chamber limited by the casing 54 and through which an air circulation passes, a rapid and regular evaporation then occurs, the flow rate d air and possibly a preliminary heating of the latter are determined according to the desired evaporation rate.
Once the contents of all of the cups formed by the membranes are evaporated, the suction pumps are stopped, the membranes are removed and replaced on the pedestals with new membranes and the process is repeated.
The advantages of the device described thus appear clearly, no transfer of the device is necessary to pass the cups formed by the membranes from their solution loading station to their evaporation station. All operations, including adjustments, assembly and disassembly of the housing, installation and removal of the membranes can be carried out remotely.
