Die Copolymeren von Äthylen mit a-Olefinen, ins besondere von Äthylen mit Propylen und bzw. oder Buten sind in verschiedenen Patentschriften der Anmel- derin beschrieben;
Elastomere der vorerwähnten Olefincopolymeren können hergestellt werden durch Erhitzen des Copoly- mers auf 180 bis 300 C mit 1-15 % Schwefel oder einer schwefelabgebenden Substanz, bis: eine homogene schwammige Masse erhalten wird, worauf diese Masse allein oder in Mischung mit natürlichen oder syntheti schen Kautschukarten gemischt wird;

Electrical single or multi-core cable The present invention relates to single or multi-core cables with one or more conductors individually surrounded by a coating and an outer protective sheath, which are suitable for low, medium or high currents and for low or high voltages, which be used in highly aggressive media in contact with or in the presence of acidic, basic or oxidizing substances and / or at relatively high temperatures: should, are suitable.
As is well known, an electrical cable consists of one or more electrical conductors (generally made of. Copper) which are covered with an insulating layer and are united with one another under a protective cover which is resistant to mechanical stresses and which is the insulation between the conductors to protect against the external atmosphere and against contact with chemically aggressive substances that could damage its electromechanical properties.
The protective coating and the insulation layer of the conductor must both have high flexibility and high tensile strength, must be easy to squeeze out and must also be resistant to high temperatures and the attack of the substances that are present at the installation site of the cable. This applies to the cables for the coils of stationary or rotating machines that work in aggressive media or at high temperatures, or the cables for the electrification of mines, chemical plants, etc.
In addition, all cables that are to be laid underground or in underground lines must also be protected on the outside by a lead jacket.
The materials previously used for cables and conductors of the above type were vulcanized natural rubber to gutta-percha and types of synthetic rubber to ethylene or isobutene polymers.
Although these substances have various advantages for certain areas of application (e.g. polyethylene in the case of underwater cables for communication purposes), they cannot be used on a large scale for general purposes, as they have very good mechanical properties in some cases, but in others do not have the desired level of thermal and chemical resistance and therefore do not have the desired durability,
if they are used in particularly aggressive media or at high temperatures.
Numerous attempts have been made to overcome these disadvantages; thus, various mixtures of the above-mentioned materials have been tried or various methods have been proposed for improving chemical resistance or heat aging, respectively.
It is clear, however, that the mixing processes and / or the various treatments require long and expensive processes that do not always solve the problem from the technical and / or economic point of view.
The present invention now relates to the use of new substances and mixtures which at the same time show very good properties in terms of electrical, mechanical, thermal and chemical resistance. It has been found that essential advantages in the production of two-core, three-core or even more multi-core electrical cables and in the insulation of conductors or double conductors can be obtained for any voltage and current, which can be used in highly aggressive media or in contact with acidic, basic or oxidizing substances and or
or are to be used at high temperatures when the coating surrounding the conductor and the outer protective sheath are mainly composed of a vulcanizate of a saturated, amorphous, 10 to 80% by weight ethylene bonded copolymer of ethylene with an α-olefin.
The copolymers of ethylene with α-olefins, in particular of ethylene with propylene and / or butene, are described in various patents of the applicant;
They are produced by copolymerization (in an organic solvent) under low pressure and in the presence of a catalyst which is a reaction product of a compound of a transition metal of IV., V. or VI. which is soluble in the organic solvent. Group of the Periodic Table of the Elements with an alkyl metal compound of a metal of 1I. or III. Group of the Periodic Table.
The particularly suitable copolymers of ethylene with propylene are preferably obtained by reacting the monomers in the complete absence of solvents at a temperature between +30 and -100 C under conditions such that the monomer mixture is in a liquid state in the polymerization autoclave, in the presence of a catalyst based on alkyl derivatives of metals from I.,
1I. or III. Group and of liquid compounds of transition metals from IV., V. or VI. Group of the periodic table.
From the copolymers obtained in this way, which contain 10-80 ethylene, vulcanized elastomers can be made forth; These can be produced in particular by vulcanization with unsaturated organic compounds that have one or more functional groups in the molecule: acidic in nature, in the presence of radical initiators and preferably with the addition of basic polyfunctional substances, such as metal oxides, to the vulcanization mixture.
Elastomers of the aforementioned olefin copolymers can be prepared by heating the copolymer to 180 to 300 C with 1-15% sulfur or a sulfur-releasing substance until: a homogeneous spongy mass is obtained, whereupon this mass alone or in a mixture with natural or synthetic rule Rubber types being mixed;
or it. it is preferred to use the copolymer with 0.5-10% of a radical initiator, which can be an organic compound from the group of alkyl, aryl and acyl peroxides and peresters, and 0.1-3 To mix sulfur and, if desired, a quinone compound, whereupon the mixture is heated to temperatures between 140 and 160 ° C.
The saturated copolymers in question and the vulcanized elastomers obtained therefrom, which are to be used according to the invention for the cables, are completely new products in this field which differ from the traditional copolymers and elastomers both in their structural and in their physicochemical properties. It is therefore quite surprising that it has been found that they: are advantageously suitable both for producing the insulation layer of the conductors and for producing the outer protective sheath.
The main advantages resulting from the application according to the invention are as follows: a) The copolymers used as the basis of the mixtures have very good electrical properties and a very low ash content (free of hygroscopic ash).
b) The mixtures based on ethylene-propylene or ethylene-butene copolymers are not destroyed by contact with copper and make tin-plating of the conductor unnecessary.
c) The vulcanized compounds are extraordinarily resistant to heat, acids and oxidizing agents, including ozone. As a result, such cables can be used under the most difficult conditions even without protection by a lead jacket.
d) The mixtures based on ethylene-propylene and ethylene-butene copolymers can be prepared with the same equipment as they are already used for the traditional rubber types in the cable industry. The processing, the pressing out and the vulcanization are carried out according to the usual methods and it is therefore possible to produce extruded cables or lead-sheathed cables vulcanized in autoclaves without any change to the existing equipment.
The various details and other advantages of the invention are shown in the following example, but without this being limited thereto.
e) The electrical properties of the copolymer and the insulation mixture are very good.

The conductors were covered with the first mixture by means of an extruder at about 100 ° C. at a speed of 25 m / min, whereupon the copolymer was placed in a tube in which water vapor was directly under a pressure of 15 atm. was blown in, vulcanized. The conductors have an insulation layer with a thickness of 1 mm.
The three conductors prepared as described above, which had been coated as usual, were then coated with the mixture for the protective sheath, in a manner similar to that described above, as is also usually done in the electrical cable industry.
The cables thus obtained were checked for the uniformity of the insulation layer and they were subjected to a test voltage of 4000 V between the conductors and between the cable and the ground. Four pieces of cable were subjected to the following aging test: 1) A sample of each copolymer blend was immersed (protecting the copper ends) in cold 68% nitric acid for 30 days. After this treatment, the samples showed no trace of damage. The. Cable withstood a test voltage of 4000 V between the conductors and between the cable and earth.
The protective sheath and the insulation layer of the individual conductors were removed from the conductors and subjected to dilatometric tests, the following results being obtained:

Each cable was placed in an air-fed drying cabinet at 120 ° C for 8 days. After this treatment, the outer surface of the casing appeared somewhat sticky, but nevertheless showed a very good consistency. Every cable resisted. the test voltage of 4000 V between every two conductors and between the conductors and earth.
The protective cover and the insulation cover were tested mechanically and gave the following results:

However, it is obvious that the elastomers in question can also be used in various special cases for the insulation and protection of other electrical parts, such as B. coils, spirals, resistors, transformer windings, switches, etc.
It should also be pointed out that the example given relates to elastomers that have been vulcanized by means of peroxides, but that this is by no means the only one of the various vulcanization processes possible for copolymers of ethylene with α-olefins.
It should also be noted that what was said for ethylene-propylene copolymers also applies to the other copolymers of ethylene with α-olefins, in particular of ethylene with propylene and / or butene.
