Description
Verfahren zur Herstellung aromatischer Thioäther
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft die Herstellung vcm. Alkylmercaptop'henolen oder Halogenalkylmercaptophenolen.
Vielle von Alkylmercaptophenolen abgeleitete Phos ph, ate und Thiophosphate sind ausserordentlich wirksame Insektizide. So ist beispielsweilse die hohe insektizide wirkung des van 4-Methylmercaptophenol abgeleiteten Diät'hyl-4-met'hyl-mercaptophenylphosphats von Fukuto und Metcalf in Journal of Agricultural ard Food Chemistry 1956, Bd. 4, Seiten 930-935, beschrieben.
Die technische Verwendung dieser Phosphate und Thiophosphate war durch das Fehlen eines einfachen und wirtschaftlichen Verfahrens zur Herstellung der als Ausgangs-bzw. Zwischenprodukte verwendeten Alkyl mercaptophenole beeinträchtigt.
Bei der zur Zeit allgemein angewandten Methode zur Herstellung von 4-Methylmercaptophenol wird als Ausgangsmaterial das sehr teure p-Aminophenoi verwendet, das mit Hilfe der schwierigen und gefahrvollen Diazoniumreaktion in 4-Mercaptophenol überführt wird, dessen Mercapto- gruppe anschliessend methytiort wird. Es wurde auch vorgeschlagen, Al'kylhnercaptophenal'e durc. Umsetzung phenolLischer Verbindungen mit Dialkyldisulfiden in Gegenwart von Katalysatoren, einschliesslich Aluminiumchlorid, Aluminiumbromid, Ferrichlorid, zinkchlorid, Zinntetrachlorid, Antimonpentachlorid, Borfluorid und Bleicherde, herzustellen.
Zur Erzielung annehm- barer Ausbeuten an Alkylmercaptophenolen ist es jedoch erforderlich, zumindest 1 Moläquiva4ent Kataly- sator je Mol Dialkyldisulfid zu verwenden. Ausserdem werden bei der Reaktion phenolischer Verbindungen mit Dialkyldisulfiden unter Verwendung von Halogenid- Katalysatoren im allgemeinen vorwiegend die 2-Isomeren an Stelle der erwünschteren 4-AIkylmercapto- phenole gebildet. Die Verwendung von Blieicherde ist nachteilig, da sie übliche Verarbeitungsanlagen durch Abschleifen schädigt und die Aufarbeitung mühsam ist, da sie abfiltriert und mit organischem Lösungsmittel gewaschen werden muss.
Das Ziel der voliegenden Erfindung ist nun ein wirtschaftliches Verfahren, nach welchem die genannten Nachteile überweunden werden können.
Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren zur Herste0l'ung von Alkyl-oder Halogenalkyl-mercaptophenolen durch Umsetzung eines Phenols, das eine freie 2-oder 4-Stellung aufweist, mit einem Dialkyl-oder Di-(halogenalkyl)disulfid, ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Umsetzung in Gegenwart einer Swlfonsäure alls Katalysator erfolgt, wobei das Molverhältnis von Sulfonsäure zu Disulfid nicht mehr als 0, 25 : 1 beträgt.
Erfindungsgemäss können vorzugsweise folgende Phenole verwendet werden : Phenol selbst, ferner alkyl-, aryl-, halogen-oder alkoxysubstituiertc Phenole, beispielswei. se 3-Isopropylphenol, 3-tert.-Butylphenol, 3-Methylphenol (m-Kresol,), 3-Äthylphenol,
3-Methyl-6-isopropylpheno, 3, 5-Diisopropylphenol,
2, 6-Diisopropylyphenol,
2-Methyl-5-isopropylphenol,
2, 6-Di-tert.-butylphenol, 3, 5-Dimethylphenol,
2-Phenylphenol, 3-Chlorphenol oder 3-Methoxyphenol oder auch 4-Methylphenol (p-Kresol), 4-Chlorphenol, l-Naphthol oder 2-Naphthol.
Die im Verfahren verwendeten Dialkyl-bzw. Di (halogenalkyl)-dislfide enthalten vorzugsweise Alkylgruppen mit 1-5 Kohlenstoffatomen. solche Disulfide sind z. B.
Dimethyldisulfid, Diäthyldisulfid,
Di-n-butyldisulfid, Diisobutyldisulfid,
Di-n-amyldisulfid, Diisoamyldisulfid und
Di-(chlormethyl)-disulifd.
Im allgemeinen werden 0, 5-2, 0 Mol Disulfid je Mol aromatischer Verbindung verwendet, wobei das bevor- zugte Molverhältnis etwa 1 : 1 ist.
Der Sulfonsäure-Katalysator kanm in drei Formen verwendet werden : 1. als Sulfonsäure als solche, wie beispielsweise Methansulforsäure, Benzolsulfonsäure, Toluolsulfonsäure oder Äthansulfonsäure, 2. in Form der durch Zugabe von Schwefelsäure zu dem Phenol gebildeten Sulfonsäure und 3. als Ionenaustauscherharz in der Säureform, wie beispielsweise Dowex-50 (ein sulfoniertes Styrdl-Divinylbenzol-Copo4'ymer mit einer Gesamtionenaustauscherkapazität im Bereich von 0, 3 bis 2, 3). Vorzugsweise wird ein Sulifonsäure-Katalysator verwendet, der durch Zugabe vom Schwefelsäure zu dem Phenol erhalten wird. Ein solcher Katalysalbor ist vom Standpunkt der Wirtschaftlichkeit aus vorteilhaft und liefert ausserdem, wie festgestellt wurde, besonders gute Ausbeuten.
Zur Erzielung hoher Ausbeuten an AlkylmercaptophenoTen ist es wesentlich, dass nichet mehr als 0, 25 Mol Sulfonsäure-Katalysator je Mol Disulfid verwendet werden. Vorzugsweise werden etwa 0, 04-0, 25 Mol Sulfonsäure-Katalysator je Mol Disulfid eingesetzt.
Wird als Katalysator eine durch Zugabe von Schwefelsäure zu dem Phenol gebildete Sulfonsäure verwendet, so werden maximale Ausbeuten erhalten, wenn 0, 04 bis 0, 1 Mol Katalysator je Mol Disulfid eingesetzt werden.
Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren wird vorzugsweise bei der Rückflusstemperatur des Reaktionsgemisches durchgeführt, wenn diese unter der Zersetzungstempera- tur der Reaktionskomponenten liegt. Im allgemeinen ist eine Temperatur in Bereich von etwa 140-150 C geeignet. Bei einer bevorzugten Arbeitsweise wird d'as Disulfid langsam zu einer zum Rückfluss erhitzten Mischung des phenols und des Sulfonsäure-Katalysators unter Rühren zugegeben. Das Gemisch wird dann zur Gewinnung des gewünschten Produkts vakuumdestilliert.
Vorzugsweise werden eine phenolische Verbindung mit freier 4-Ste ; ung und der Sulfonsäure-Katalysator in einem Reaktionsgefäss gemischt, und das Gemisch auf Rückflusstemperatur erhitzt. Das Disuflid wird dann langsam unter Rühren, beispielsweise innerhalb etwa 1/4 bis 4 Stunden, zugegeben. Es wird weiter beim Rückfluss erhitzt, wobei Alkylmercaptan gebildet wird.
Nach be endeter Zugabe des Disuffids wird das Gemisch weiter während etwa 1-4 Stunden unter Rückfluss erhitzt un'd däMn zur Gewinnung des Produkts vakuumdestilliert,
Das als Nebenprodukt der Umsetzung erhal'tene Alkyl-bzw. Halogenalkylmercaptan kann als solches in den Handel gebracht werden, oder es kann beispiels- weise mi'ttels Luft zum entsprechenden Disutfid oxydiert werden.
Beispiele 1-9
Bei der Durchführung der Beispiele wurde das folgende allgemeine Verfahren angewendet. Das verwendete Phenol, beispielsweise Phenol selbst oder 3-Methylphenol, und der Sulfonsäure-Katalysator wurden in einem mit einem mechanischen Rührer, einer Aussenheizung, einem Einfülltrichter und einem Rückflusskühler versehenen Reaktionsgefäss gemischt. Die Mischung wurde zum Rückfluss erhitzt, und es wurde unter andauerndem Rühren mit der tropfenwelsen Zugabe des Disulfids, beispielsweise Dimethyldisulfids, begonnen. Die Reaktions- mischung wurde ununterbrochen beim Rückfluss erhitzt, wobei Methylmercaptan ats Nebenprodukt gebildet wurde.
Nach Beendigung der Dimethyldisulfidzugabe wurde das Gemisch noch eine Zeitlang unter Rückfluss geh, alten und dann vakuumdestilliert. Wurde Phenol als Reaktionskomponente verwendet, so wurden 2-Methylmercaptophenol und 4-methylmercaptophenol als Pro dukte erhalten. Bei Verwendung von 3-Methylphenol wurde als Produkt 3-Methyl-4-methylmercaptophenol erhalten.
Die Ergebnisse der Beispiele 1-9 sind in der folgen- den Tabelle I zusammengestellt.

Beispiele 10-26 mengestellt. In allen diesen Beispiellen wurden 0,04 Mol Ind er folgenden tabelle 11 sind die Ergebnisse wei- 96%ige H2SO4 verwendet, und das Reaktionsgemisch terer Versuche ungter Anwendung des in verbindung mit wurde vor der Vakumdestillaiton mit Wasser gewaden Beispielen 1-9 beschriebenen Verfahrens zusam- schen.

Claims (1)
- PATENTANSPRUCH Verfahren zur Herstellung von Alkyhnercaptopheno- len oder Hallogenaqlkylmercaptophenolen durch Umsetzung eines Phenols, welches eine freie 2-oder 4-Stellung aufweist, mit einem Dialkyl- oder Di-(halogenalkyl)-disulfid, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Umsetzung in Gegenwart einer Sulfonsäure als katlaystor erfolgt, wobei das Moverhältnis von Sulfonsäure und Disulfid nicht grosser is als 0, 25 zu 1.UNTERANSPRÜCHE 1. Verfahren nach patentsnspurch, dadurch gekenn- zeichnet, dass das Molverhältnis von Sutfonsäure und Disulfid 0, 04 bis 0, 25 zu 1 ist.2. Verfahren nach Patentanspruch und Unteran- sprue 1, dadruch gekennzeichnet, dlass das Phenol Phe- nol selbst oder ein alkyl-, aryl-, haogen-oder älkoxy- substitutiertes Phenol mit freier 4-Stellung ist.3. Verfahren nach Patentanspruch und den Unteran- sprüchen 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Sulfonsäurekatalysator durch Zugabe von Schwefelsäure zum Phenolausgangsstoff erhalten wird und das Moitver- häl'tnis van Sulfonsäure und Disulfid während der Umsetzung 0, 04 bis 0, 1 zu 1 beträgt.4. Verahren nach Patentanspruch und den Unter aasprüchen 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeic'hnet, dass das Phenol mit einem Dialkyldisuflid umgeeseztzt wird, das Alkylgruppen mit 1 bis 5 Kohlenstoffatomen aufweist.5. Verfahren nach Unteranspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Dialkyldisulfid Dimethyldisulfid ist.
