Sample embedding device
In the metallographic preparation of metallic samples such as samples of irradiated material, it is necessary to coat the sample to be studied in order to be able to subject it to a suitable polishing. This polishing is done in two stages, a mechanical polishing followed by an electrolytic polishing or an ionic polishing as the case may be.
The devices used for the coating generally comprise a base and at least one vertical column on which slide two horizontal plates serving, one for applying on the base a guide ring of the coating material around the sample and the Another is to apply the sample itself to the base by means of a removable nail intended to serve subsequently as an anode for electrolytic polishing.
The potting resin as it solidifies holds this nail in place.
However, it may happen that during the coating operation, due to insufficient pressure of the nail, the resin, which is electrically insulating, can pass between the head of the nail and the sample preventing any subsequent electrical contact between them. and making electrolytic polishing impossible.
The nail being held firmly by the solidified coating material, it is necessary to strip and repeat the operation.
The present invention makes it possible to overcome this drawback by allowing the value of the electrical contact between the nail and the sample to be monitored continuously during the coating operation. If this value does not allow electrolytic polishing, it is immediately remedied by increasing the pressure of the nail on the top wall of the sample.
The object of the invention is a device for coating metal samples, comprising a metal base for supporting the part to be coated, at least one movable plate vertically relative to this support, which carries a removable nail for clamping the sample against said support, nail intended to be fixed tightly to said sample by the embedding material, characterized in that the nail is fixed in the tray by means of an electrically insulating ring and is connected to the end of 'an electrical resistance measurement circuit, the other end of which is grounded via the base for the purpose of checking the ohmic value of the nail-sample contact.
The invention will be better understood following the following description of an exemplary embodiment and the accompanying figure illustrating this description.
This single figure shows an elevational view with partial cutouts of a coating device.
This device comprises a base 1 supporting a vertical column 2 on which slide two plates 3 and 4 each provided with weights 3a, 4a. Two pins 5 and 6 judiciously placed on the column 2 allow by moving in grooves 7 and 8 drilled in each plate and weight the vertical sliding of these along the column 2. These pins also serve as blocking stops of said trays in the high rest position when they have come out of the groove 7 or 8 and are brought into contact with the lower part of the tray itself.
The base 1 also carries, next to the column 2, a support 21, fixed by screws 22 and pierced with a recess for accommodating a metal cup 18 in the center of which the sample 13 to be coated is placed. A cylindrical ring 14, preferably of plastic material, for guiding the coating material around the samples 13, is also placed in the cup 18.
The lower plate 3 comprises the right of the sample 13 and the ring 14 a bore 23 allowing the free passage of a nail 17 removably mounted in a nail holder 1 1 fixed in the plate 4. This nail holder 11 is integral with a ring 12 of electrically insulating material interposed between it and the plate 4 and comprising a flange 1 2a allowing its fixing, for example by screws 24 on the lower part of said plate 4.
The nail holder 11 is pierced at its upper part with a bore 25 which serves as a female bearing surface for an electrical plug 9 connected to one end of an electrical circuit. not shown, comprising an ohmmeter and a voltage source and allowing continuous measurement of electrical resistance. This circuit is connected at its other end to a second plug 10 inserted into a bore 26 of the base 1 and therefore the circuit is closed to ground via the base.
At the end of the plate 4 is fixed a perforated tab 16 for supporting a funnel 15 for supplying the coating material to the sample. A slot in the plate 3 allows this funnel 15 to pass through the latter and to reach a point very close to said sample 13.
When the device is in position for the coating operation. the pins 5 and 6 are engaged in the corresponding grooves 7 and 8 of the trays which have slid down the column 2.
The metal sample 13 is placed in the cup 18 in the center of the plastic ring 14 on which the plate 3 rests which, by its weight and that of the weight 3a, maintains the ring 14 in contact with the cup. The nail 17 presses on the upper surface of said sample 13 and clamps it against the cup 18 and the base 1 with a pressure corresponding to the weight of the plate 4 and of its weight 4a.
It then establishes close contact between the different components and the electrical resistance measurement circuit is closed between terminals 9 and 10 by the nail 17, the sample 13, the cup 18 and the base 1 which are all made of good materials. conductors of electricity, the trays on the other hand are electrically insulated; the plate 3 by the bore 23 leaving a relatively large space between said plate and the nail 17 and by the ring 14 separating it from the cup. and the plate 4 by the ring 12 interposed between it and the nail holder. No closing of the electrical circuit by the column and the plates is therefore possible.
The coating material, for example a resin such as those known under the brand <(Araldite or +. Prési a, liquid at the time of the operation is introduced by the funnel 15 supported by the perforated tab 16, the part of which lower is close to sample 13.
This coating material flows around the sample 13 and covers its upper part, also surrounding the base of the nail 17. As long as the pressure exerted by the latter is sufficiently strong, no passage is possible between it and the nail. sample and the coating material cannot infiltrate between them. The electrical circuit is closed and the resistance indicated by the ohmmeter is constant. If, however, for some reason the pressure of the nail decreases, the liquid embedding material penetrates over the entire upper face of the sample and tends to electrically insulate it from the nail; the resistance of the circuit increases and this increase is immediately signaled by the measuring circuit. It is then sufficient to place a load on the plate 4 to increase the pressure of the nail and to force the resin which is liquid.
Mechanical and electrical contact is reestablished and the circuit resistance reduced to its initial value.
At the end of the operation, the resin solidifies and firmly holds the nail on the sample. For the subsequent operation of electrolytic polishing of the lower face of the sample, it is then ensured not only of the total absence of material on this lower face but also of good electrical contact of the other face with the nail intended for serve as anode for this operation.
