Transport apparatus This invention relates to a transport apparatus comprising conveying elements in the form of a screw and a tubular casing for said screw, said conveying elements being rotatably mounted around the same geometic axis for conveying material in the longitudinal direction of said axis and, accordingly, in the longitudinal direction of said screw and said housing.
Screw conveyors are already known for vertical conveyance, the casing of which rotates, while the screw is kept stationary. The housing is rotated at such a speed that the transported material, under the action of centrifugal force, is thrown against the wall of the rotating housing and moves upward by means of the stationary screw. Given the high braking effect of the screw on the material to be transported, the efficiency of these positive devices is low.
Also known is a screw conveyor for substantially horizontal transport of the material which tends to adhere to the internal surface of the housing. To free the casing from this adherent material, an intermittent or continuous rotation of the casing is caused, a slow rotation relative to the screw which also turns slowly. The efficiency of this conveying device is as low as the efficiency of conventional screw conveyors. The fact that with certain types of materials this low efficiency did not decrease further is due entirely to the cleaning effect of the slowly rotating housing.
The invention resides in the combination of transport elements, one being intended to be driven in rotation around its axis at a speed such that the material transported, under the effect of centrifugal force, is launched against and deposited in the form of a layer on the surface of the casing located opposite the screw, the other transport element being intended to be driven in rotation about its axis at a speed corresponding approximately to the speed of said first transport element mentioned.
By a suitable selection of the direction of the pitch of the screw, the pitch of the latter and the directions of rotation of the screw and of the housing, it is possible, with a low power, to obtain an output of up to 70 % which in most cases is approximately three times the yield attainable with known screw conveyors.
The invention will now be described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a transport apparatus according to the invention, this section being taken through the supply end of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken along line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the outlet end of the transport apparatus.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along the line IV-IV of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a diagram.
The transport apparatus shown in the drawings com takes a conveying passage 2 defined by a housing 1 and a screw 3 extending through this passage. An axis of rotation extends in the longitudinal direction of the casing 1 and of the screw 3. This axis is indicated by a dashed line bearing the sign 4. The screw 3 has a core 5 formed by a tube which is provided at its two ends of journals 6 and 7 respectively, mounted in bearings 8 and 9 which are provided in the ends 10 and 11 respectively, in the form of a sleeve of the housing 1. The ends 10 and 11 in the form of a sleeve of the housing 1 are mounted in bearings 12 and 13 respectively, in a partially shown support.
A part 14a of this support holds the bearing 12, while the bearing 13 is mounted in the other part 14b of said support. A hopper 15 is also mounted in the part 14a of the support, this hopper extending upwards around the casing 1. The narrowest part 15a of said hopper is disposed in the region of the inlet openings 16 made in the casing. 1, each opening 16 being partially delimited by a bucket 17 fixed to the housing 1. During the rotation of the housing 1 and the buckets 17 in the direction indicated by arrow 18 in FIG. 2, the buckets 17 will bring the free material (not shown) into the lower part of the conveying passage 2.
This material is fed in the usual way into the hopper 15 and from there into the passage 2 and is transported to the upper part of the housing 1.
A V-groove pulley 19, for receiving a drive belt 20, is attached to the journal 7. A V-groove pulley 21 is also attached to the socket-shaped end 11, which pulley is driven by a pulley. V-section belt 22. Thus, both the housing 1 and the screw 3 can be rotated in opposite directions around the axis of rotation 4. A housing 23 extends downwardly below the side. lower part 14b of the support, around the upper part of the casing 1 which is provided with discharge openings 24. The housing 23 is provided with a discharge passage 25.
Under the respective discharge openings 24, the housing 1 has a radial blank 26 which, on its side directed towards the discharge opening 24, has substantially radial walls 27 located opposite the opening 24. These radial walls 27, during the rotation of the housing 1 relative to the fixed housing 23, transport the material leaving the opening 24 and contribute to the transfer of this material and to its discharge through the passage 25.
When the transport apparatus described above is turned on and the housing 1 and the screw 3 are rotated, the housing 1 in the direction of arrow 28 and screw 3 in the direction of arrow 29, the routing passage 2 is quickly filled with the material which, under the effect of the centrifugal force caused by the rotation of the housing and of the screw, is launched against the surface of the housing located opposite the screw. The transported material is deposited in the form of a layer on said surface, which layer extends from the casing 1 to the core 5 and is rapidly transported in the direction of the arrow 30 and, optionally, exits through the passage 25.
Tests carried out with the transport apparatus described above gave the values indicated in the following table. The screw used for these tests had an outer diameter of 86 mm and a pitch of 80 mm. The internal diameter of the tube was 96 mm.

During test No 1, the flow rate was 30 l / min and during test N 2, it was 85 l / min. During test N 3, the housing 1 and the screw 3 were driven in rotation, each at a speed of 500 rpm. In the last case mentioned, a flow rate of 2951 / min was obtained.
The table also shows the result of tests during which the screw 3 had a speed of 600 rpm (test N 4) and a speed of 400 rpm (test N 5). During these two tests, the speed of the crankcase was 500 rpm. If, according to the last row of the table representing test NI) 6, the results obtained with these tests are added together and compared to each other, it will be seen that if the results of tests N 1 and No 2 are added and that the housing 1 and the screw 3 have a combined speed of 1000 rpm, the total flow will be 1151 / min,
value that can be reached if the housing 1 and the screw 3 are driven in simultaneous rotation. However, currently, if the casing is driven at 500 rpm, according to test N 2, and the screw is driven at 500 rpm, as in test N 1, the flow rate will be 2951 / min, which shows that an unexpected technical effect far exceeding the total effect of the rotation of the housing 1 and of the screw 3 is obtained.
Fig. 5 shows how the filling effect at a constant crankcase speed of 500 rpm and at a lower but gradually increasing speed of the screw increases rapidly until reaching 70% when the screw finally reaches the same speed as that of the coach. ter. Thereafter, the efficiency decreases rapidly at a higher speed of the screw, this speed being gradually increasing. Therefore, the maximum flow is obtained when the housing and the screw rotate at the same speed and the speed is such that the material transported is deposited in the form of a layer on the surface of the housing located opposite the screw.
It has not heretofore been possible to fully explain what causes the unexpected high efficiency of the transport apparatus described above.
The speed of the housing should be selected depending on the diameter of the housing, so that the frictional forces caused by the action of centrifugal force, on the one hand, in the material transported and, on the other hand, between the material transported and the crankcase, are greater than gravity.
The speed required for a given transport device having a housing and a screw of a certain diameter can be calculated from the following formula
EMI0002.0020
where n = velocity c = centrifugal force u = coefficient of friction m = mass g = acceleration due to gravity r = radius W = peripheral velocity C = m.r.W- '
EMI0003.0002
However, the device can also operate at lower speeds, given the support provided by the screw. For a more exact calculation of the speed, the pitch of the screw must be taken into account.
If a correction factor k for pitch and backlash losses is introduced into the above equation, then the formula will become:
EMI0003.0003
If the speed of the crankcase used in the tests indicated above is calculated on the basis of this formula, it will be seen that the unexpected technical effect of this invention is obtained at approximately a minimum speed of 135 rpm for the crankcase. and approximately the same speed for the screw.
A larger screw pitch can be used, since the transported material, due to the rotation of the transport elements, will tend to the vertical effect. Step angles of up to 45 () have been tried with success giving higher throughput and lower power being required.
The detailed construction of the transport apparatus and the speeds of the housing 1 and the screw 3 can be chosen at will and determined according to the material to be transported. The conveying apparatus shown in the drawings extends vertically, which is an operating position which heretofore has been practically not possible for conventional screw conveyors. However, it is also possible to use the transport apparatus according to the invention in a more or less inclined position.
The position of the transmission and / or dragging device with respect to the housing 1 and to the screw 3 is of minor importance in the application of this invention and this device can thus be connected to the end of the feed. the device instead of being connected to the discharge or discharge end of the device.
