   Insbesondere seien unter den Copolymeren dieser Klasse die Copolymere erwähnt, die durch Polymerisation eines oder mehreren Monomerer wie Äthylen und a-Olefine der Formel R-CH= CH2, worin R eine Alkylgrupple mit 1-6 Kohlenstoffatomen bedeutet, mit einem oder mehreren Dienen oder Polyenen erhalten werden, die beispielsweise zu einer oder mehreren der folgenden Klassen gehören: a) Lineare nicht konjugierte Diene (beispielsweise    1, 4-Hexadien ;    1, 5-Heptadien;   1, 6-Heptadien ;    2   Methyl-pentadien- 1,4; 2-Methyl-hexadien-l,5);    b) zyklische nicht konjugierte Diene oder Polyene  (beispielsweise   Zykloheptadien- 1,4;    Zyklookta   dien-1,4; Zyklooktadien-1,5;

   Zyklodekadien- 1,6;       Zyklodekadien-1, 7 ;      Zyklododekadien- 1,7;    Zy   klododekatrien-1,5,9; 1 -Methyl-zyklooktadien
1,5;   3 -Methyl-zyklooktadien- 1,5);    c)   Alkenylzykloalkene    (beispielsweise 4-Vinylzyklo   hexen- 1; l-Hexen-5-yl-zyklohexen-l ; 1-Buten-3-       yl-zyklohexen-1;    l-Allylzyklohexen-l ; l-Penten   4-yl-zyklopenten 1; 3-Buten-3-yl-zyklopenten-l ;
3 -Methyl-4-allyl-zyklohexen- 1;   3 -Methyl- 1 -bu-       ten-3-yl-zyklopenten-1 ;

   2,3,3 -Trimethyl-4-vinyl- zyklopenten-l);    d) Dialkenyl- oder Polyalkenylzykloalkane (bei spielsweise cis und trans   1,2-Divinylzyklo-    butan,   trans-Divinylzyklopropan;      1, 2-Divinyl-       zyklopentan; 1,3,5-Trivinylzyklohexan; 1,2,4-
Trivinylzyklohexan); e) polyzyklische Endomethylendiene (beispielsweise bizyklisches   [2,2,1 ]-Heptadien-2, 5;    bizyklisches    [2,2,2]-Oktadien-2,5;    bizyklisches Pentadien, 2    Methylen-bizyklisches-[2,2,    1   J-hepten-5).

  Process for the preparation of new olefinically unsaturated carboxyl groups
High molecular weight compounds
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new high molecular weight olefinically unsaturated carboxal group-containing compounds.

   It has been found that such high molecular weight polycarbonyl compounds (practically always over 5000) can be prepared if olefinically unsaturated olefin copolymers with the olefinic double bonds in side groups or in cyclic groups belonging to the main chain are oxidized.

   In this way, olefinically unsaturated polycarbonyl compounds are obtained which have not yet been described in the literature.

   Processes for the preparation of unsaturated olefin compounds, for example by copolymerizing one or more monomers such as ethylene and aliphatic α-olefins, with one or more monomers with two or more multiple bonds in the molecule, have already been described in our own patents.

   In particular, the possibility has already been shown of producing unsaturated copolymers which contain multiple compounds either in side groups or in cyclic groups of the main chain.

   In particular, among the copolymers of this class, mention may be made of the copolymers which, by polymerizing one or more monomers such as ethylene and α-olefins of the formula R-CH = CH2, where R is an alkyl group with 1-6 carbon atoms, with one or more dienes or polyenes be obtained, which belong, for example, to one or more of the following classes: a) Linear non-conjugated dienes (for example 1,4-hexadiene; 1,5-heptadiene; 1,6-heptadiene; 2 methyl-pentadiene-1,4; 2 -Methyl-hexadiene-1,5); b) cyclic non-conjugated dienes or polyenes (for example cycloheptadiene-1,4; cyclooctadiene-1,4; cyclooctadiene-1,5;

   Cyclodecadiene 1.6; Cyclodecadiene-1,7; Cyclododecadiene 1.7; Cyclododecatrienes-1,5,9; 1 -Methyl cyclooctadiene
1.5; 3-methyl-cyclooctadiene-1,5); c) Alkenylcycloalkenes (for example 4-vinylcyclohexen-1; l-hexen-5-yl-cyclohexen-l; 1-buten-3-yl-cyclohexen-1; l-allylcyclohexen-l; l-penten-4-ylcyclopentene 1; 3-buten-3-yl-cyclopentene-1;
3-methyl-4-allyl-cyclohexene-1; 3-methyl-1-buten-3-yl-cyclopentene-1;

   2,3,3-trimethyl-4-vinylcyclopentene-1); d) Dialkenyl or polyalkenyl cycloalkanes (for example cis and trans 1,2-divinylcyclo- butane, trans-divinylcyclopropane; 1,2-divinylcyclopentane; 1,3,5-trivinylcyclohexane; 1,2,4-
Trivinyl cyclohexane); e) polycyclic endomethylenedienes (e.g. bicyclic [2,2,1] -heptadiene-2,5; bicyclic [2,2,2] -octadiene-2,5; bicyclic pentadiene, 2-methylene-bicyclic- [2,2,1 J-hepten-5).

   Copolymers of the above-mentioned classes still have one or more double bonds in side groups or in groups belonging to the main chain and, when vulcanized with sulfur-containing mixtures of the type used for the only slightly unsaturated rubbers, give vulcanized products that generally have good mechanical properties have.

   So far the possibility of using the double bonds contained in such copolymers for purposes other than vulcanization was neither expected nor described.

   In particular, the possibility has not yet been described to incorporate oxidized groups into the macromolecules with the formation of carbonal groups corresponding to the double bonds present. On the other hand, in view of the known behavior of the unsaturated copolymers, this was not obvious either.

   However, it is known that unsaturated rubbers are degraded more or less rapidly and to a greater or lesser extent by the action of oxidizing agents such as atmospheric oxygen. First of all, the formation of peroxide compounds generally takes place, with oxygen atoms being bound to the double bonds.

   This peroxidation is then followed by more profound changes (formation of hydroxyl and hydroperoxide groups, etc.), whereby carbon atoms that are connected to other carbon atoms, especially tert. Carbon atoms are bound, are also involved.

   In addition, the oxidizing agents bring about a gradual crosslinking in the product with the formation of a three-dimensional structure, which gradually decreases the solubility of the product, which then becomes insoluble in boiling aromatic solvents.

   The inventive method for the preparation of new olefinically unsaturated carboxyl-containing compounds with high molecular weight, which consist of a practically saturated main hydrocarbon chain with carboxyl-containing side chains, and contain olefinic double bonds in side chains and / or rings, is now characterized in that olefinically unsaturated olefin copolymers with the olefinic Double bonds in side groups or in cyclic groups belonging to the main chain are oxidized by means of oxygen and / or ozone-containing gas mixtures and / or substances that can give off oxygen at temperatures below 10 "C, the working conditions being selected so

   that carboxyl groups are formed corresponding to a portion of the olefinic double bonds present in the copolymers.

   The formation of carboxyl groups takes place without an undesired reaction at tert. Carbon atoms, or with a view to a temporary formation of peroxide groups.

   If desired, the products obtained directly by copolymerization can be fractionated by solvent extraction prior to oxidation.

   The oxidation of the copolymers, which causes a break in the double bonds in the side groups with the formation of carboxyl groups, can, for. B. by more or less oxygen or ozone enriched air (ozonized air).

   The oxidation can be carried out in one or two stages. For example, oxidation using ozone can be carried out first, followed by oxidation using hydrogen peroxide.

   If the oxidation is carried out by gas mixtures containing oxygen, it is very useful and appropriate to work in the presence of salts of heavy metals such as cobalt or manganese.

   The oxidation can take place in the liquid phase, i.e. H. after dissolving the copolymers to be oxidized in a suitable solvent.

   The working conditions under which the oxidation is carried out, in particular the temperature, are expediently chosen so that the formation of hydroperoxide groups is avoided.

   It has been found that when working, e.g. B. in the presence of ozone, the best results are obtained when the oxidation is carried out at temperatures below room temperature, preferably at temperatures between -50 and + 100 C. However, it is also possible to lower the specified lower temperature limit even further without affecting the results.

   Finally, it is possible to change the working conditions, e.g. B. Set the duration of the oxidation so that only a part of the double bonds is oxidized.

   The number of carbonyl groups introduced into the copolymer obviously depends not only on the degree of oxidation but also on the number of multiple bonds present in the polymer chain; H. on the number of diene or polyene units present in the copolymer.

   Furthermore, the diene or polyene used to produce the unsaturated copolymers also influences the structure of the polycarbonyl compounds obtained in this way.

   A single carboxyl group is formed when a multiple bond in a side chain of the main polymer chain is broken through oxidation.

   Such copolymers are, for example, those obtained by copolymerizing ethylene or propylene with linear non-conjugated monomers, e.g. B.

  Diallyl.

   The structural unit of the polymer chain with side chain of these copolymers can be represented by the following sub-formula:
EMI2.1

In this case, the oxidation can be represented by the following equation, assuming that it takes place by means of ozone:
EMI2.2

On the other hand, if the multiple bonds are contained in cyclic groups belonging to the main chain (e.g. in an ethylene-propylene-1,5-cyclooctadiene terpolymer), the double bond is broken with subsequent ring opening and the formation of two carboxyl groups .

   In the polycarbonyl compounds produced according to the invention, side chains and / or rings with multiple bonds can still remain if only partial oxidation has taken place.

   The type and degree of oxidation in the end product can be determined by infrared analysis.

   The bands at 5.75 Cc indicate carbonyl groups or the formation of carbon-oxygen bonds in the macromolecules of the polymer. If the oxidation is not complete, the oxidized copolymer still contains double bonds, as indicated by the presence of a band at 6µ which is characteristic of the absorption spectrum of double bonds. This band is absent when the oxidation has taken all multiple bonds.

   The polycarbonyl compounds are practically free of hydroperoxide groups, which is confirmed by the complete lack of crosslinking. Therefore, there is no significant change in the solubility of the product after the oxidation.

   Polycarbonyl compounds prepared in accordance with the invention can be used in numerous areas of industry.

   For example, they can be vulcanized using basic polyvalent compounds to give elastomers with good mechanical properties, with polar additives used in the vulcanization mixture easily dispersing.

   It is apparently the presence of carboxyl groups in the product, which the dispersion of the polar additives, such as. B. kaolin, clay, silica, etc. facilitated, which results in mixtures containing these additives homogeneously distributed. The addition of such polar substances results in vulcanized elastomers with better mechanical properties (higher tensile strength and higher modulus of elasticity) and better dynamic properties (higher elasticity) compared to elastomers obtained from non-oxidized copolymers.

   A good distribution of the additives z. B. a mixture of 1: 1 parts by weight of oxidized copolymer with non-oxidized copolymer or with rubber.

   If a sufficient number of free double bonds remain in the oxidized copolymers, these can also be covulcanized with various types of rubber or with unsaturated copolymers.

   Due to the presence of carboxyl groups in the oxidized copolymer chains, strong adhesion can be achieved between the material produced according to the invention, rubber and other materials (e.g. between rubber and metals or between rubber and fabrics made from natural or artificial fibers).

   To achieve such adhesion, it may be useful to use reactive compounds such. B.

  To use diisocyanates or phenol-formaldehyde resins, which react chemically both with the rubber and with the carrier. In addition to the field of adhesives, the polycarbonyl compounds can also be used as ion exchange resins.

   The possibility of polycarbonyl compounds produced according to the invention can also be vulcanized with mixtures containing zinc oxide, which proves the formation of carboxyl groups during the oxidation. The fact that vulcanized products obtained in this way have good mechanical properties also indicates that the carboxyl groups are regularly distributed in the macromolecules.

   These carboxyl groups can also be bound by alcohols or amines.
