Process for the production of a linear polyamide
The linear, fiber-forming polyamides suitable for the production of tire cord, for example, can be produced by condensation of terephthalic acid with polymethylene diamines with six to eight carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain and which are substituted by at most two methyl groups.
These e.g. The polyamides described in U.S. Patent No. 2,752,328 are typical nylon polymers that are opaque, highly crystalline, easily stretchable to form textile fibers, and melt within a narrow temperature range.
Switzerland. U.S. Patent No. 388,624 relates to a process for making polyamides by condensing terephthalic acid or a functional derivative thereof with polymethylene diamines. This method is characterized in that at least one polymethylenediamine is used which has a chain of at least 6 methylene groups between the terminal amino groups, one or more of which is or are substituted by at least one alkyl radical, which or which alkyl radicals together are three or more Contain carbon atoms.
The alkyl substitution can be in the form of one or more alkyl groups and the total number of carbon atoms in the side chain or chains can be from 3 to 18. Suitable substituted polymethylene diamines are, for example: 2-methyl-4-ethylhexamethylene diamine; 2-ethyl-4-methylhexamethylene diamine; 2,2,4-trimethylhexamethylene diamine; 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylene diamine 2,2,5,5-tetramethylhexamethylene diamine; 3-isopropylhexamethylene diamine; 3-isooctylhexamethylene diamine; 3-isododecylhexamethylene diamine and 2,4-diethylhexamethylene diamine.
Although these polyamides are chemically very similar to the previously known polyamides, they have a number of strikingly different properties which clearly distinguish them from the known polymers. The most striking property of the polyamides produced according to the process of the claim of the main patent is that they are transparent and have a crystal clear appearance, which is retained even after prolonged heating and slow cooling. Too (transparent) means that the polymers are transparent in the absence of pigments or other opaque additives, in contrast to the opaque appearance of the usual crystalline polyamides.
These polymers are completely amorphous and their amorphous state is thermodynamically stable. In addition, these new polymers gradually soften over a wide temperature range, usually about 20 40ob, and are therefore particularly suitable for molding and other forming processes. Not only are they soluble in typical polyamide solvents such as sulfuric acid, formic acid, phenol and cresol, but they also swell in lower alcohols, e.g.
Methanol, ethanol and isopropanol and result in a honey-like pourable mass that is suitable for the production of paints and adhesives. They also have excellent tear resistance, impact resistance and flexibility. In contrast to the previously known polyamides, however, they have very low extensibility. This property in connection with their amorphous nature makes these polyamides unsuitable for the production of synthetic fibers.
In the cited patent no. 388 624, for example, the production of the polyterephthalamide of 3-isopropylhexamethylene diamine with an intrinsic viscosity of 2.2 and a melting point between 210-2200C, the production of the polyterephthalamide of 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylene diamine with a viscosity of 1.8 and a melting point between 200-210 ° C. and finally the production of the polyterephthalamide of 2-methyl-4-ethyl-hexamethylene diamine with a melting point between 180-190 ° C.
It has now been found that e.g. the isomeric 2,2,4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine with terephthalic acid gives a polymer with essentially the same properties and with the same melting point range as the 2,4,4-isomer; in a similar way, for example, 2-ethyl-4-methyl-hexamethylenediamine with terephthalic acid gives a polymer with essentially the same properties as the 2-methyl-4-ethyl isomer. The polyterephthalamide of 3-isooctyl-hexamethylene diamine with a viscosity of 1.2 melts within 1601900C.
It has now been found that mixtures of isomeric alkyl-substituted hexamethylene diamines, which have one or more substituents with a total of at least three carbon atoms, are also able to give valuable polymers of the type described above with terephthalic acid, terephthalic acid being wholly or partially replaced by isophthalic acid can replace.
The present invention now relates to a process for the production of linear polyamides, which process is characterized in that an isomer mixture of C-alkyl-substituted hexa-methylenediamines which contain one or more substituents with a total of at least three carbon atoms, together with terephthalic acid and / or Isophthalic acid, or using functional amide-forming derivatives of the reaction participants mentioned, condensed.
A mixture of terephthalic acid with preferably at most 10% by weight isophthalic acid is advantageously used. These results are very surprising, since normally the use of isomers or other mixtures, both for the acid and for the diamine component, leads to a very sharp drop in the melting point of the polymer and to a change in the other properties, so that the product is worthless or becomes of less value. E.g. the melting point of the polyterephthalamide of a mixture of 2.2,4- and 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine is between 190-2200C, while the melting points of the polyterephthalamides of the individual diamines are between 200-2200C.
Even if the same mixture of isomeric diamines is condensed with a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids in the ratio 90/10, the melting point of the polymer is still between 165-190C.
This finding has a significant impact on the cost of manufacturing the polymer. The hexamethylene diamines are expediently converted into the dicarboxylic acid by oxidation of the corresponding phenol with air or nitric acid. produced by reaction of the acid with ammonia to produce the dinitrile and by catalytic hydrogenation of the dinitrile. If the starting point is phenol or a symmetrically substituted phenol, such as 4-isopropylphenol or 3,5-xylenol, a single product is obtained. If, however, an asymmetrically substituted phenol is used, two isomers are obtained. E.g. the 3-methyl-5-ethyl-phenol gives a mixture of 2-methyl-4-ethyl-hexamethylenediamine with 2-ethyl-4-methyl-hexamethylenediamine.
The separation of such a mixture into its components complicates and increases the cost of the process. The method according to the present invention overcomes this disadvantage.
If isophores or 3,3,5-trimethyl-cyclohexenon are used as starting material for the production of trimethylhexamethylenediamine, this isophorone is hydrogenated into the dehydroisophore, after which this is oxidized to form trimethyladipic acid. This synthesis is continued as described above via the nitrile to trimethylhexamethylenediamine. In this case too, the end product consists of a stereoisomeric mixture of 2,2,4- with 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine.
Terephthalic acid is often produced from p-xylene or by isomerization of o-phthalic acid. In both of these processes, it is difficult to avoid the presence of small amounts of isophthalic acid. Since a considerable part of the production costs of high-purity terephthalic acid is caused by the expensive removal of the m-isomers either from the raw material or from the end product, terephthalic acid containing a small percentage of isophthalic acid will of course be significantly cheaper than the 100% p-isomer. The possibility of using a cheaper type of terephthalic acid for the production of polyamides is an important advantage in accordance with the present invention.
The polyamides produced according to the present process are clear and transparent; they generally have similar properties whether they were produced with terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid or with mixtures of these two acids. The terephthalamides are preferred to the isophthalamides for most purposes because their melting point is 50 to 1000C higher and because they have somewhat better mechanical properties. The melting point and mechanical properties of the blended polymers are between these two types of homopolymers.
Of particular interest are polyamides made from mixtures of acids containing only small amounts of isophthalic acid, e.g. at most 10%. These so-called mixed polyamides melt at a temperature which is only slightly below the melting temperature of the corresponding terephthalamide polymers. They are therefore more pure! Terephthalamides, indistinguishable in terms of their mechanical properties.
The polyamides produced in this way can be used by extrusion, injection molding or blow molding for the production of a large variety of articles of daily use. They can also be formed into tough, transparent packaging films or tablets by pouring or in some other way, because of their high swelling in lower alcohols, especially methanol, ethanol and isopropanol, and their solubility in mixtures of such alcohols with certain chlorinated hydrocarbons, especially in one Mixtures of chloroform and methanol with a high content of chloroform, they can be processed into coating and adhesive compositions.
In the preparation of the linear polyamides according to the invention, one can start directly from the aromatic dicarboxylic acids and the alkylated diamines.
However, it is more advantageous to first prepare the salt of the components in a molar ratio of 1: 1.
This can generally be done as follows:
A suspension of 1 mol of acid in 300 ml of water is refluxed and a solution of 1.05 mol of the alkylated diamine in 500 ml of alcohol is slowly added dropwise. Adding a small amount of water will dissolve the not yet dissolved salt. The yellowish solution thus obtained is decolorized with animal charcoal and filtered; the salt is obtained in the form of colorless crystals. This is then purified by repeated recrystallization from 70-80% alcohol.
The polycondensation of the salt can be carried out in accordance with one of the known continuous or discontinuous processes which have been developed for the preparation of polyhexamethylene adipamides (nylon 6/6). The discontinuous process is best carried out in three stages, the general procedure being as follows:
100 parts by weight of salt with 0.161% of an organic monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic acid as stabilizer are liquefied in 20-50 parts of water at 120-1400C in a stainless steel dissolving vessel connected to a medium pressure autoclave and equipped with heating and stirring. The solution is then brought into the autoclave, which has been preheated to 2500C, by nitrogen pressure.
After the steam has been released, the mixture is heated to 2800 ° C. for 2-3 hours with continuous nitrogen flushing, which temperature is then maintained for a further 1.5 to 2 hours. Under certain circumstances it can be advisable to reduce the pressure to 2.5 mm Hg for about half an hour in order to remove the last remains of the condensation water.
Other amide-forming derivatives of aromatic dicarboxylic acid, e.g. their esters with volatile Al alcohols can be used in the preparation of the salts, such as the amide-forming derivatives of the diamines, e.g. the N, N '-diformyl derivatives can be used.
Compatible dyes. Plasticizers, stabilizers, bleaches and other ingredients can be added to the polycondensation reaction mixture either before, during or after the reaction. In some cases it is advantageous to first produce a solid precondensation product, mix it with one or more of the above-mentioned ingredients and then complete the polycondensation reaction without pressure.
The polycondensation reaction can be carried out in an inert solvent such as N-alkyl-pyrrolidone, N-alkyl-piperidone and similar cyclic amides, or in suspension in a suitable non-dissolving liquid. In such cases the polycondensation is preferably carried out at the boiling point of the solvent i.e. at 210-2800C. To remove the water, the solvent is continuously recycled and dehydrated with the aid of a suitable drying agent. The polycondensation can also be carried out in a melt condensation process, in which case the addition of a small amount of solvent, usually not more than 10%, may be appropriate for the purpose of reducing the melt viscosity and accelerating the development of bubbles.
The polyamides of the present invention can also be used at low temperatures using the interfacial condensation method according to the USA patent
No. 2,831,834, which consists in mixing, with vigorous stirring, equivalent or almost equivalent amounts of a halogen acid dissolved in a water-immiscible solvent such as carbon tetrachloride and an aqueous solution of diamine. Using this method, the polyamides are obtained in the form of a fine-grain colorless powder with a viscosity of 0.6 to 1.0.
In general, however, it is difficult to obtain polyamides according to the present invention having the desired high molecular weights using this interfacial condensation method; for this reason, the above-described thermal
Polycondensation process preferred.
As with all polycondensation reactions, a high degree of purity of the reactants in the present combination of the aromatic dicarboxylic acids with the alkylated diamines is also required here. Both the acids and the diamines used should have a degree of purity of at least 99.8% by titration in order to obtain a chain length sufficient for optimum mechanical resistance of the polycondensation product. Monofunctional by-products such as mono-amines, monoimines and monocarboxylic acids are particularly harmful.
In the following examples, all parts mentioned are parts by weight.
example 1
16.6 parts of terephthalic acid are made into a paste with 30 ml of water and brought to the boil on a steam bath.
A solution of 16.5 parts of an isomeric mixture of 2,2,4- with 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylenediamine in 50 ml of alcohol is slowly added dropwise from a dropping funnel, all of the terephthalic acid eventually dissolving. After cooling, the terephthalic acid salt of trimethylhexamethylenediamine separates out in the form of colorless crystals with a melting point of 2500C and with a yield of 85%. Another 10-15% of the salt can be obtained by treating the mother liquor.
In a 1 liter dissolving vessel of a stainless steel autoclave with a capacity of 1 liter, a mixture of 300 g of the salt obtained above, 100 ml of water and 0.5 g of glacial acetic acid is heated to 1400C with the exclusion of air and constant stirring, the salt being completely in Solution works Using pure nitrogen, the solution is passed through a filter into an autoclave preheated to 2500C, the internal temperature of which falls to 160-180C. When the heating is switched on, the pressure and temperature rise again quickly. By opening a lid valve, water vapor is released, so that the pressure compensation with the atmosphere takes place approximately at the same time as an internal temperature of 2500C is reached.
The melt is now pressureless for 31/2 hours to a temperature of 2800C, it is left at this temperature for 2 hours and then pressed out under pressure as a cylindrical rod in cold water under the action of nitrogen.
The polymer is transparent and crystal clear, it melts between 190-2200C and has a viscosity of 1.50.
The polyamide from Example 1 is cut into chips, melted and injection molded into dumbbell-shaped test pieces 3 mm thick, which are used in a series of standard tests to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the polymer. The polyamide of Example 1 withstands the extraordinarily high stress of 780 kg / cm and, at low room temperature, has an elongation at break of 1-3% as well as high tensile strength, impact strength and flexural strength.
It does not suffer plastic flow, but remains elastic under a load that is almost equal to the stress at break. It has a broad softening point range, more than 400C, a Vicat temperature of 1560C, and is very swollen by methanol, ethanol and isopropanol. It is soluble in a mixed solvent containing 80 parts by volume of chloroform and 20 parts by volume of methanol. The liquid composition formed by swelling or dissolving the polyterephthalamide from Example 1 can be used for casting or in molding processes, or as a lacquer or adhesive. The polymer of Example 1 has a surprisingly low water absorption, namely less than 3% after 114 days of immersion.
The polyamide from Example 1 is very suitable for the production of deformed, transparent, temperature and impact-resistant plastic drinking glasses, oil- and grease-impermeable containers, bags, bottles, tubes, pipes and other shaped products. It can be cast, calendered, extruded or blown for the production of transparent foils suitable for packaging food and other objects. Because of its high softening temperature, the polyamide from Example 1 can be used to produce containers or films which can withstand sterilization temperatures.
The most surprising properties of the according to Bei. Game 1 manufactured polyamides are their crystal clear transparency, high resistance to tension, low elasticity and low water absorption. These properties, together with the high softening temperature, high tensile strength and impact strength, which are typical of the polyamides in general, and the relatively low production costs of the polymer from Example 1, allow the products made from this polyamide to be used in a variety of ways.
Although the low extensibility and amorphous nature of this polyamide make it completely unusable for the production of stretched textile fibers, its high tension and resistance to plastic flow give the objects molded according to Example 1 the very important property of dimensional stability under constant load, which property is the There are no nylon deformed articles produced according to known processes.
Example 2
Following the procedure of Example 1, 16.5 parts of an isomeric mixture of 2-methyl-4-ethyl with 2-ethyl-4-methyl-hexamethylene-diamine are used to produce the salt. The polyamide produced by polycondensation of the salt has a melting range of 180-2000C, i.e. practically the same.
Range like the polyterephthalamide of 2-methyl-4-ethyl-hexamethylene-diamine of Example 3 of the main patent. The polyterephthalamide of 2-ethyl.4-methyl-hexamethylenediamine also has the same melting range. All of these polymers can be used in molded articles. Films and other products described in Example 1 are worked out.
Example 3
Using the method described in Example 1, a polyamide is produced, 16.6 parts of isophthalic acid and 16.5 parts of an isomeric mixture of 2,2,4- with 2,4,4-trimethyl-hexamethylene- diamine can be used.
The polyamide produced by the polycondensation reaction is transparent and crystal clear, it melts within a range of 130-1450C and has a viscosity of 0.9. In addition to the above-mentioned low softening temperature and somewhat low tear strength, the terephthalamide thus produced has properties similar to that of Example 1. It can be used for the production of a wide variety of useful molded articles, panels and films and is particularly useful for the production of liquid paints or adhesive compositions suitable.
Example 4
A polyamide is prepared according to the process of Example 1, 16.6 parts of isophthalic acid and 16.5 parts of an isomeric mixture of 2-methyl-4-ethyl with 2-ethyl-4-methyl-hexamethylenediamine being used for the production of the salt .
The polyamide produced by the polycondensation is transparent and crystal clear, it melts within a range of 120-1350C and has a viscosity of 1.4. The polyamide obtained in the form of cylindrical rods can be cut into desired shapes. The round rods could be cut into chips, melted or deformed using any conventional deformation technique.
Example 5
A polyamide is prepared according to the process of Example 1, 16.6 parts of a mixed acid of 95% of terephthalic acid and 5% of isophthalic acid with 16.5 parts of an isomeric mixture of 2.2.4- with 2, 4,4-trimethylhexamethylene diamine can be used.
The polyamide produced by the polycondensation is transparent and crystal clear, it melts within a range of 175-2000C. has a viscosity of 1.3 and has essentially the same properties as the polymer prepared according to the method of Example 1. It can be processed by injection molding, extrusion or other deformation processes. Similar to the polymer of Example 1, it can also be used in liquid compositions suitable for paints and adhesives.
Example 6
The procedure of Example 5 was repeated using an acid mixture containing 90% terephthalic acid and 10% isophthalic acid and the same mixture of diamines. The resulting polymer is clear and transparent, it melts within a temperature range of 165-1900C and has a viscosity of 1.2. It has properties which are very similar to those of the polymer according to Example 5, and it can be processed in the same way.
The polyamides produced according to Examples 5 and 6 are compared with a series of supercondensation polymers produced with the same diamines and with an acid mixture varying from 100% terephthalic acid to 100% isophthalic acid.
The polyamide made from 100% terephthalic acid melts within a temperature range of 185 21 00C and that made from 100% of its isophthalic acid melts within a temperature range of 135-1500C. The melting points of polyamides made from acids with intermediate compositions do not pass through a eutectic point, as one would normally expect, but drop sharply with the first addition of 20% isophthalic acid to a melting range of 155-1700C and then gradually drop over the rest of the range Mixing range up to the melting point of the 100% intrinsic isophthalic acid polymer.
The polymer made from a mixture of 40% terephthalic acid and 60% isophthalic acid melts between 140 and 1550C, while the polymer made from a mixture of 60% terephthalic acid and 40% isophthalic acid has a melting point between 145 and 1600C. All of these intermediate polymers, like those of the pure acids, are clear and transparent. The mechanical properties of the mixed acid polymers vary between those of the polymers made with the neat. The mechanical properties of the polymers which are produced from acid mixtures with a maximum of 10% isophthalic acid are particularly valuable since their properties are practically indistinguishable from those of the pure terephthalamides.
The use of larger amounts of isophthalic acid, on the other hand, leads to a significant deterioration in the various mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength, etc., so that the properties of such polymers approach those of the somewhat less desirable isophthalamide polymers.
In the following Table I the properties of the polyterephthalamides of the variously substituted hexamethylenediamines, produced according to Switzerland. Main patent No. 388 624 or the present patent contrasts those of the polyterephthalamides which were prepared from 2-methyl-hexamethylenediamine, 3-methyl-hexamethylenediamine and 2,5-dimethyl-hexamethylenediamine in accordance with the known procedures.

As can be seen from this Table I, the Swiss. Pat. No. 388,624 and the present patent have properties which are strikingly and unexpectedly different from those of the polymers made in the known manner.
The sudden change from opaque, crystalline, textile fiber-forming polymers to crystal clear, completely amorphous resins, which cannot be used to make textile fibers, with the help of what appears to be such a small change in structure, could not be predicted.
The polyterephthalamide according to Example 1 produced from the isomeric mixture of trimethylhexamethylene diamines, which is particularly typical for the polyamides produced according to the invention, is made with nylon 6, with the known terephthalic acid 3-methylhexamethylene diamine polyamide and the polymethyl methacrylate, a typical vinyl polymer , compared in a series of standard tests. The results of these tests are shown in Table II.
The softening range of a given polymer is determined by heating chips in a nitrogen atmosphere until they are deformed by gently pressing a glass rod or spatula and then heating until the polymer melts and continues to flow. The softening range is the temperature range between the softening or deformation temperature and the flow temperature. It is represented by symbols that indicate its minimum size. B. 300C or 40 C.
Other tests are carried out at 200C and 65% relative humidity. When determining the tensile strength, elongation at break and stress stress, the clamping jaws are moved at such a speed that the test piece breaks after 60 seconds. exposed to water or steam. This is a very advantageous property, since it makes it possible to sterilize foodstuffs in packaging made of the polyamides produced according to the invention. It can also be seen from Table II that these polyamides inherently have many of the desired properties of both nylon and vinyl polymers, e.g. of the polymethyl acrylate.
In spite of their low extensibility, the polyamides produced according to the invention are surprisingly flexible and not brittle.
The flexural strength of the polyamide produced according to Example 1 is tested by bending a sample of this resin over a rod through an angle of 600 and thereby measuring the bending force which can be applied before breaking. A flexural strength value of 1620 kg / cm2 is used for the polyamide produced according to the invention, and 270 kg / cm2 for

It can be seen from Table II that the polyamides in columns I and II essentially do not differ from one another, whereas the polyamides of column III prepared according to the invention have certain striking properties.
The softening range of these latter polyamides is higher than 400C, and is thus similar to that of the polymetacrylates, but not the narrow softening ranges of the typical polyamides of columns I and II. These polyamides not only have an exceptionally high resistance to tension (780 kg / cm2), but they also have the property of not expanding before breaking. Indeed, these polyamides have very low elongation values, generally less than 10% of their breaking strength. The resistance to tension of these polyamides is therefore usually exactly the same as the tear strength.
The polyamide thus remains elastic up to a load that is equal to the resistance to tension stress. The impact resistance is in the range of the conventional polyamides of the nylon type. The Vicat or softening temperature is also quite high and is closer to the softening temperature of nylon 6 than that of polymethyl methacrylate. Because of this high softening temperature, films and containers made from these polyamides can be identified without risk as nylon 6 and one of 1000-1200 kg / cm for polymethyl methacrylate.
Further tests are carried out with the trimethylhexamethylenediamineterephthalic acid polymer to determine its behavior towards various solvents. Samples of the polymer of 20 X 10 X 3 mm are prepared and, after weighing, are completely immersed in various liquids at room temperature for one to two weeks; then the samples are rinsed with water or acetone, air-dried for two hours and then weighed again.
No weight difference is found after immersion in the following liquids: n-hexane, n-heptane, benzene, tetrahydronaphthalene, cyclohexanone, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl acetate and vinyl acetate.
The behavior of the trimethyl-substituted polyamide in water is of particular interest. Less than 3% water is absorbed after 114 days (nylon: about 10% in two weeks). The relatively high water resistance of the polyamide produced according to the invention makes it particularly suitable for electrical insulation and for uses in which the material is always exposed to moisture.
The trimethyl substituted polyamide and similar polyamides also have the surprising property. in alcohols, e.g. Methanol, ethanol and isopropanol swell extraordinarily. The polymers do not go into these solvents in the form of a solution, but swell completely over the course of a few hours, so that they liquefy into a viscous, pourable mass. The castable compositions containing the polyamides produced according to the invention can be used in various lacquers for finishing textiles and for adhesives.
The polyamides produced according to the invention are soluble in a mixture of 80 parts by volume of chloroform and 20 parts by volume of methanol. Solutions up to a concentration of 30% can be produced and can be used for casting clear, tough polymer films.
These polyamides can absorb large amounts of methylene chloride and chloroform. Since these solvents do not liquefy the polyamides, they serve as emollients or plasticizers, and facilitate the processing of the polyamides in Banbury mixers, roller mills, etc., whereby plasticizers, foaming agents, dyes, stabilizers and the like can be added at the same time.
According to Switzerland. Polyamides made in U.S. Patent No. 388,624 and the present patent are particularly useful as molding resins for making molded articles of all kinds. So you can e.g. for the production of temperature and impact-resistant transparent plastic drinking cups, oil and grease impermeable containers, bottles, bags and other food packaging.
The wide range in which these polyamides remain thermoplastic not only facilitates the production of sheet material in a vacuum and the production of films by blowing and calendering, but also enables the production of pipes and lines that are crystal clear even with thick walls.
