Description

Device for generating electrical energy The present invention relates to a device for generating electrical energy, containing a fuel cell, a drying device, a humidifying device and first lines to add an oxidizing agent to the humidifying device, the humidified oxidizing agent to the fuel cell, and excess oxidizing agent with reaction products of the cell to the drying device and condensed reaction products to the humidifying device or

the excess oxidizing agent and non-condensed reaction products to lead from the environment, second lines to a coolant to the drying device and from this to the fuel cell and a further line to conduct a fuel to the fuel cell.

The invention will now be explained in more detail with the aid of the drawing using an exemplary embodiment.

Fig. 1 shows the scheme of a preferred Ausfüh approximate form of a device for generating electrical energy according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows a humidifier for the device of FIG.

FIG. 3 shows a drying device for the device according to FIG. 1.

4 shows an assembly which can be used as a distributor for the fluid in the fuel cell, in the humidification device and in the drying device.

The device 400 shown in Fig. 1 for generating electrical energy contains a fuel cell 401, a drying device 402 and a humidification device 403, which are connected to one another by lines. Any of the known embodiments which have lines for the supply of fuel, oxidizing agent and coolant can be used as the fuel cell 401.

The humidifying device 300 shown in FIG. 2 contains a housing 301, the interior of which is divided into several sub-spaces by liquid-permeable partition walls 304. A channel-forming assembly 305 is arranged adjacent to each partition wall and is explained in more detail below with reference to FIG. The surface of the assembly facing away from the partition wall is covered with an impermeable plate 306 or rests directly on the housing wall.

Lines 307 are also provided through which water or any other liquid with significant vapor pressure under working conditions is introduced into the sub-spaces and lines 302, 303 through which a fluid to be humidified can also be drawn into or from the sub-spaces.

The drying device 200 shown in FIG. 3 has a housing consisting of two parts 201 and 202 and held together by a screw connection 203. Each housing part contains an inlet line 204, 205 through which a liquid or a gas containing a liquid can be introduced into the device. The housing part 203 is further provided with an outlet line 206 and the housing part 201 with two outlet lines 207 and 208. The housing forms a chamber, in the middle of which a separating layer 209 is arranged, on the two surfaces of which liquid-permeable partition walls 210 are attached.

An assembly 211 or 212, which fills the space between the intermediate wall and the inner housing wall, rests against each partition wall. Such an assembly is explained in more detail below with reference to FIG.

In operation, warm, moist air is introduced into the drying device 200 through line 204 and cold, dry air through line 205. When the warm, moist air enters the device 200, it flows in the assembly 211 first in the direction of the arrows 213 and is then, as will be described in more detail ben, directed onto the adjacent partition 210, which is indicated by the arrows 215 is. The cold, dry air first flows upwards in the assembly 212 in the direction of the arrows 214 and is then directed onto the adjacent partition wall 210, which is indicated by the arrows 216. The cold, dry air can then penetrate into the permeable partition and into part of the separating layer 209.

Because of the temperature difference existing in the device, part of the water vapor from the warm air flow condenses in the separating layer 209 and on the permeable right partition wall 210. Because of the temperature and humidity difference, the cold air flow takes part of the condensed air after penetrating the separating layer 209 Water vapor. It is possible that more water vapor condenses from the moist air flow than can diffuse into the dry air flow. In this case, the excess water flows to the lower part of the housing and is discharged through line 208.

When exiting through line 207, the warm, moist air has a lower temperature and less moisture than when entering the device and, conversely, the cold, dry air has a higher temperature and humidity when exiting than when entering. Of course, the alternating humidification and drying can also take place without there being a temperature difference between the separate air flows.

It is also possible to use an impermeable separating layer instead of the permeable separating layer 209. Then the device only effects drying of the moist air stream without humidifying the dry air stream.

The device shown in FIG. 3 can not only be used for direct or indirect drying, but also as a fuel cell. For this purpose, it is only necessary to either electrically isolate the housing parts 201 and 202 from one another or to produce them from electrically non-conductive material and to use a solid or liquid electrolyte as the separating layer 209. The partition walls 210 which touch the surfaces of the separating layer then preferably contain a catalytically active material. If a fuel or an oxidizing agent are then supplied through the lines 204 and 205, the device can be used to generate electrical energy.

The drying device 200 works with the arrangement of its components shown in countercurrent. By the simple measure of a relative rotation of the housing parts 201 and 202 against each other, however, you can also work in cross-flow or direct current who the.

FIG. 4 shows a component that can be used both in the humidification and in the drying device as a distributor 305 (FIG. 2) or 211, 212 (FIG. 3) for the corresponding fluid. The assembly contains a plate 108, or interacts with an adjacent plate, for example the partition wall 304 (FIG. 2) or an intermediate wall 210 (FIG. 3), which is used as a transmitter of a flowable material or heat or both. The assembly further includes a corrugated perforated sheet metal or a component 141 composed of perforated material. In a preferred embodiment, the component includes a plurality of first parts 142 lying in one plane and a plurality of second parts 143 lying in another plane.

The first and second parts are connected to each other by inclined flat parts 144. A first part 142, together with the two adjacent inclined parts 144, forms an upwardly open channel 150, while a second part 143, together with the two adjacent inclined parts, forms a downwardly open channel 152. The inclined parts 144 are relative to the Horizonta len by an angle which is between 20 and 87 and preferably 45 inclined.

A non-perforated plate 1.1.3 is attached to the component 141, which corresponds to the plate 306 in the humidifying device according to FIG. 2 and is formed in the drying device according to FIG. 3 by the housing parts 201, 202, so that the plate 108 the downwardly open and the plate 113, the upwardly open channels (152 or 150) covers. In the embodiment shown, all of the downwardly open channels 152 are also closed on one end by end plates 157 and all of the upwardly open channels 150 on the opposite end by end plates 155.

When using the assembly for distributing a fluid, this is introduced into the assembly through a non-closed, upwardly open channel, as indicated by arrow 33. The fluid can flow through the entire length of the channel without suffering a noticeable drop in pressure, but cannot flow through the channel because of the closing plate 155 closing the channel at the opposite end.

Since the pressure of the fluid is uniform over the entire length of the channel, the fluid will evenly penetrate the perforated inclined parts that form the sides of the channel. Since the exchange of substances between the fluid and the plate 108 in the upwardly open channels can only take place through the perforated part 142, which forms the base of the upwardly open channels, the more important locations for the transfer of mass and / or energy the downwardly open channels 152.

When the fluid penetrates the inclined parts of the inlet channel, it is directed down onto the plate 108 at an acute angle. The preferably nozzle-shaped perforations in the inclined parts convert the pressure of the fluid into speed, so that it hits the surface of the plate 108, as indicated by the bent arrow 128. The fluid is then discharged from the downwardly open channels 152 through the opposite, inclined, perforated parts.

For this purpose, the downwardly open channels are closed on each end face by end plates 157, so that the flow through these channels is only possible through the laterally inclined parts. It should be noted that the dimensions of the channels can be selected independently of the extent of the plate 108. In contrast, the length of time the fluid is in contact with the plate 108 can be influenced by the choice of the dimensions of the channels. The fluid then exits the assembly through one of the upwardly open channels, as indicated by arrow 35.

To operate the device 400, an oxidizing agent, preferably oxygen, is conveyed through the line 404 to the humidifying device 403, and the humidified oxidizing agent exiting the humidifying device 403 is conveyed through the line 105 to the fuel cell 401. The oxidizing agent is moistened to prevent the electrolyte in the fuel cell from drying out too much. Some of the oxidant will chemically react in the fuel cell while the Regt is used to remove the reaction products formed on the oxidant side of the fuel cell. If the reaction product is water, some of the water can be recovered to moisten the incoming oxidant.

The excess oxidizing agent and part of the reaction products are therefore passed from the fuel cell into the drying device 402 through line 4.06.

A coolant is fed to the drying device = 102 through line 407. As a result of the heat exchange between the mixture of excess oxidant and the reaction products on the one hand and the coolant on the other hand, at least some of the reaction products condense. The condensed portion of the reaction product is then passed through line 408 to humidifier 403. The remainder of the oxidant and the uncondensed reaction products are removed from the dryer through line 409.

The coolant is further conducted from the drying device 402 through the line 410 to the fuel cell and removed therefrom through the line 411. In addition, the fuel cell is supplied with fuel through line 412 and the unused fuel is discharged again through line 113.

The device 400 generating the electrical energy preferably works with fuels and oxidizing agents whose reaction product is water. In a preferred embodiment, the drying device 102 and the humidifying device 403 are thermally insulated and work adiabatically and are in this way independent of the ambient temperature. The relative arrangements of the lines that feed the fluids to the fuel cell, the drying device and the humidifying device or derive from them have no effect on the functioning of the device shown.
