Description

Fig. 2 eine Rotationsdruckmaschine mit einem Plattenzylinder.

Process for the production of printed matter
The present invention relates to a method for the production of printed products, such as books or advertising material.

It is known to produce books, in particular paperbacks of entertainment literature, using the rotary printing process; they are either printed on conventional printed sheets of usually 16 pages or produced in newspaper printing, after being collated, usually cut into individual sheets, which are then glued on the cut spine.

This method has various disadvantages, in particular single sheets connected by spine gluing can only be opened unsatisfactorily as a book, because it is not enough that only the cut edge is covered by the glue but the glue must always penetrate a little between the single sheets so that it holds.

According to the invention, these disadvantages are eliminated by dividing the paper web printed by a plate cylinder in rotary printing into layers that are folded like a fan-fold album, after which the layers are glued with a plastic tape on the side forming the spine of the printed product.

The device for carrying out the method is characterized in that it has at least one plate cylinder and a deflection device for the paper web.

In the following two exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are explained with reference to a drawing showing the same. It shows:
1 shows an apparatus comprising a rotary printing press with two plate cylinders, and
2 shows a rotary printing press with a plate cylinder.

According to Fig. 1, the paper tape 1 is from the paper roll 2 via a pulley 3 between the printing cylinder 4 and the very large plate cylinder for straight printing 5, which is colored by an inking unit 6, via further pulleys 7 and 8 between the printing cylinder 9 and the plate cylinder for backing 10 fed to the folding cylinders 11 and 12, which are equipped so that they fold the paper tape alternately. Then the paper tape 1 is fed by a swivel device 13 to two rotating disk spirals 14 and 15, which fold the folded paper tape like a fan-fold album, whereupon a conveyor belt 16 feeds it to a cross cutter 17 which cuts the paper tape 1 into layers and which can be controlled by photo cells.

A collecting device 18 again forms a folded layer 19 from the cut paper band, which falls onto a cross conveyor belt 20, which is moved in time, which runs on the parallel printing machines that print the different layers of a book at the same time, so that the consecutive layers in terms of number of pages correctly collapse and thus be fed directly to the glueing and hanging machine, not shown, without a special collating device.

The laying device 13 to 20 can be modified for special purposes such that the conveyor belt 16 is omitted and the cross cutter is arranged in front of or behind the disk spirals 14, 16.

If several layers of a book are printed next to one another on - correspondingly wide - plate cylinders, a length cutter required for the paper web can be switched on at any point. It is advisable to arrange it behind the folding cylinders 11, 12 at the latest and to provide a special - spatially offset from one another - laying device 13 to 20 for each individual partial web.

Fig. 2 differs from Fig. 1 only in that for books of smaller size the plates for face printing and reverse printing are arranged side by side on the same plate cylinder 21 and the paper web runs over two offset printing rollers 22 and 23, between which a reversing device 24 is arranged that turns the paper web by means of four pulleys and shifts it laterally.

The plate cylinders should be large enough to hold plates for at least 30 printed pages. Very large plate cylinders can be equipped with flat printing plates.

The paper web printed by the plate cylinder in rotary printing is divided into layers that are folded like a fan-fold album, after which the layers are glued with a plastic tape on the side that forms the spine of the book.

In contrast to the cut edge of the single sheet, the folded edge offers much more - at least sufficient - adhesive surface to produce an absolutely durable book on the one hand and to avoid the penetration of glue between the sheets on the other.

This not only simplifies gluing, but also creates a book that can be opened smoothly at any point, which can therefore also contain figures, drawings, diagrams, tables, etc. that span two pages. This manufacturing process is therefore particularly advantageous for price lists, technical advertising material, but also for textbooks, simple maps, etc.

Since the fan-fold album-like fold allows a far greater degree of flexibility in terms of the number of pages in the individual layers than the known methods, the plate cylinders are given the largest possible diameter so that they can accommodate as many plates as possible, so that the collation is completely unnecessary for books of smaller size, for larger ones Books are considerably easier to collect. The enlargement of the diameter of the plate cylinder beyond the conventional dimension offers the further advantage that the plate cylinder can be equipped with a flat set, so the laborious production of cylindrical plates is eliminated; adapting the printing roller and the inking unit to the non-circular circumference of the plate cylinder is easily possible with simple and known technical means.

The manufacturing process described also offers the possibility of using only one plate cylinder in special cases. For this purpose, the plates for face printing and reverse printing are arranged next to one another on the same plate cylinder, and the paper tape is guided over the same cylinder again by means of pulleys.

Another possibility is to produce a paperback of conventional size with correspondingly wide plate cylinders with only one plate cylinder each for face printing and reverse printing on a closed paper web, which is only cut lengthways after printing, with the folded layers then being carried out by a conveyor belt running across the paper web can be removed and guided past the individual folding devices in such a way that the pages are correctly sorted according to successive layers and are then bound without the need for special collating devices.
