Description
Schmiermittel Die Erfindung betrifft ein neues Schmiermittel, das ein oder mehrere Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle enthält. Die Verwendung von Alkylsalicylsäuresalzen mehrwertiger Metalle als Schmiermittelzusätze ist bekannt. Werden Schmiermittel mit kleinen Mengen dieser Salze versetzt, so sorgen diese dafür, dass die Innenwand von Motorzylindern, insbesondere von Dieselmotorzylindern, sauber bleibt, und wirken einer Ablagerung kohlenstoffhaltiger Produkte auf Kolben und in Kolbenringnuten entgegen, so dass ein Kolbenringstecken vermieden wird. Neue Entwicklungen auf dem Dieselmotorengebiet zielen auf höhere thermische Belastungen, was insbesondere zu einem Ansteigen der Kolbentemperatur im Bereich der Kolbenringnuten führt. Eine der Möglichkeiten, Schmier öle herzustellen, die die Anforderungen dieser modernen Motoren erfüllen, besteht in der Verbesserung der vorgenannten Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle in bezug auf ihre Dispergier-Wirkung bei hoher Temperatur. Es ist Aufgabe der Erfindung, Schmiermittel mit verbesserten Dispergier-Ei,g,enschaften bei hohen Temperaturen herzustellen. Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Schmiermittel. das durch einen Gehalt an einem oder mehreren Salzen mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren gekennzeichnet ist, die mindestens eine Alkylgruppe mit mehr als 12 Kohlenstoffatomen enthalten und von denen mehr als 60 Mol.-% am Benzolring eine Alkylgruppe in p-Stellung zur Hydroxylgruppe tragen. Die bisher in der Literatur als Schmiermittel empfohlenen Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle mit einer Alkylgruppe mit mehr als 12 Kohlenstoffatomen sind, soweit man aus der angegebenen Herstellungsmethode schliessen kann, alle von Alkylsalicylsäuregemischen abgeleitet, die höchstens etwa 50 Mol.-%, doch in den meisten Fällen beträchtlich weniger als 20 Mol.-%, Alkylsalicylsäuren enthalten, die am Benzolring eine Alkylgruppe in p-Stellung zur Hydroxylgruppe tragen. Bei der Verbrennung im Motor können sich aus den im Kraftstoff enthaltenen Schwefelverbindungen u.a. Schwefeltrioxid (SO) bilden, das mit dem in den Verbrennungsgasen enthaltenen Wasser zu Schwefelsäure umgewandelt wird. Diese Schwefelsäure kann u.a. zur Korrosion der Metallteile des Motors führen und kann auch die dem Schmieröl zugesetzten Salze in die entsprechenden Säuren umwandeln, die ähnlich korrodierend sein können. Zur Neutralisation der während der Verbrennung im Motor gebildeten sauren Verbindungen ist ein Neutralisationsmittel im Schmieröl wünschenswert. Deswegen verwendet man die vorgenannten Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle in der Form von basischen Salzen. Unter dem in dieser Beschreibung und in den beigefügten Ansprüchen verwendeten Ausdruck ein basisches Salz eines mehrwertigen Metalls mit einer Alkylsalicylsäure wird eine Verbindung eines mehrwertigen Metalls oder ein Gemisch von Verbindungen von mehrwertigen Metallen verstanden, die neben dem mehrwertigen Metall noch einen oder mehrere Alkylsalicylsäurereste enthalten, mit der Massgabe, dass die Grammäquivalentzahl des mehrwertigen Metalls grösser ist als die Grammäquivalentzahl der Alkylsalicylsäure. Die Basiszität solcher Salze mehrwertiger Metalle kann durch die M Formel ( - 1) ¯ 100% ausgedrückt werden, in der Z M die Grammäquivalentzahl des mehrwertigen Metalls und Z die Grammäquivalentzahl der Alkylsalicylsäure bedeuten, z.B. pro 100 g des basischen Metallsalzes. Eine Basizität der Salze mehrwertiger Metalle von bis zu etwa 1000% ist im allgemeinen für die fragliche Anwendung ausreichend. Eine Basizität von bis zu etwa 250%, z.B. zwischen 50 und 200%, ist oft ausreichend. Unter den für die Herstellung des Schmiermittels der Erfindung geeigneten Alkylsalicylsäuresalzen mehrwertiger Metalle sind die Salze zweiwertiger Metalle bevorzugt, besonders bevorzugt sind die Erdalkalimetallsalze, insbesondere die Calciumsalze. Wie bereits erwähnt, müssen die für die Herstellung von Schmiermitteln mit verbesserten Hochtemperatur Eigenschaften geeigneten Metallsalze von Alkylsalicylsäuren abgeleitet sein, die mindestens eine Alkylgruppe mit mehr als 12 Kohlenstoffatomen enthalten. Bevorzugt sind Alkylsalicylsäuren, die mindestens eine Alkylgrup pe mit 14 bis 18 Kohlenstoffatomen enthalten. Ferner sind Salze von Alkylsalicylsäuren bevorzugt, von denen mehr als 70 Mol.-% am Benzolring eine Alkylgruppe in p-Stel lung zur Hydroxylgruppe tragen. Die voranstehenden, im Schmiermittel der Erfindung enthaltenen Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle können nach verschiedenen Verfahren hergestellt werden. Vier Herstellungsverfahren, die zu sehr guten Produkten geführt haben, sind im folgenden näher beschrieben. Diese Aufzählung ist jedoch keineswegs beschränkend, da die auf anderem Weg hergestellten Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle selbstverständlich ebenfalls für die Herstellung des Schmiermittels der Erfindung geeignet sind, sofern sie den genannten strukturellen Anforderungen genügen. Die geeigneten Salze können beispielsweise aus Phenol, o-Alkylphenol oder p-Alkylphenol durch Alkylie rung, Carboxylierung und Salzbildung hergestellt werden. Als Alkylierungsmittel verwendet man vorzugsweise ein Olefin oder ein Gemisch von Olefinen mit mehr als 12 Kohlenstoffatomen im Molekül. Für die Alkylierung von Phenol und o- und p-Alkylphenol haben sich mit Säure aktivierte Tone als sehr geeignete Katalysatoren erwiesen. Im allgemeinen verwendet man eine Katalysatormenge von 1 bis 10 Gew.-%, insbesondere 3 bis 7 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht aus Alkylierungsmittel und zu alkylierendes Phenol. Die Alkylierung kann zwischen 100 und 2500C und insbesondere zwischen 125 und 2250C durchgeführt werden. Geht man bei der Herstellung der Salze durch Alkylierung mit Olefinen von Phenol aus, so verwendet man vorzugsweise 2 bis 4 Mol Olefin pro Mol Phenol, insbesondere 2,5 bis 3,0 Mol Olefin pro Mol Phenol. Geht man bei der Herstellung der Salze durch Alkylierung mit Olefinen von o- oder p-Alkylphenol aus, so verwendet man vorzugsweise 0.5 bis 1,0 Mol Olefin pro Mol o- oder p Alkylphenol, insbesondere 0,7 bis 0,8 Mol Olefin pro Mol o- oder p-Alkylphenol. Ausgezeichnete Ergebnisse erzielt man mit o- oder p-Kresol als Ausgangsverbindung für die Herstellung der Salze über den o- bzw. p-Alkylphenolsyntheseweg. Die über den Phenol- oder o- oder p-Alkylphenol syntheseweg hergestellten Alkylphenole können in die entsprechenden Alkylsalicylsäuren nach der für diese Umwandlung aus der Literatur bekannten Methode umgewandelt werden. Beispielsweise ist folgendes Verfahren gut geeignet. Die Alkylphenole werden mittels einer alkoholischen Lauge in die entsprechenden Alkylphenolate umgewandelt und diese bei 1400C und bei einem Druck von 10 bis 30 at mit CO behandelt. Aus den so erhaltenen Alkylsalicylaten können die entsprechenden Alkylsalicylsäuren beispielsweise mit 30%iger Schwefelsäure freigesetzt werden. Neutrale und basische Salze mehrwertiger Metalle können aus diesen Alkylsalicylsäuren ähnlich nach den für diese Umwandlung in der Literatur beschriebenen Methoden hergestellt werden. Neutrale Calciumsalze kann man beispielsweise herstellen, indem man die Alkylsall- cylsäuren in die entsprechenden Natriumsalze überführt und diese mit einer äquivalenten Menge Calciumchlorid reagieren lässt. Zur Herstellung basischer Calciumsalze mit einer relativ niedrigen Basizität, z.B. 50SO, kann man die Alkylsalicylsäuren mit zwei Äquivalenten Calcium in der Form von Ca(OH)2 behandeln. Zur Herstellung basischer Calciumsalze mit einer hohen Basizität, z.B. 200%, kann man die Alkylsalicylsäuren mit vier Äquivalenten Calcium in der Form von Ca(OH) unter Einführung von 1,6 Äquivalenten CO behandeln. Die gewünschten Salze können auch ausgehend von Salicylsäure durch Alkylierung und Salzbildung hergestellt werden. Bei dieser Herstellungsart verwendet man als Alkylierungsmittel vorzugsweise ein Olefin oder ein Gemisch von Olefinen mit mehr als 12 Kohlenstoffato- men im Molekül. Für die Alkylierung von Salicylsäure hat sich BF3 als sehr geeigneter Katalysator erwiesen. Im allgemeinen beträgt die Katalysatormenge 1 bis 2 Mol pro Mol Salicylsäure. Die Alkylierung kann bei 60 l500C, insbesondere zwischen 100 und 1400C, durchgeführt werden. Beginnt man die Herstellung der Salze mit der Alkylierung von Salicylsäure mit Olefinen, so verwendet man vorzugsweise 1,5 bis 4,0 Mol Olefin pro Mol Salicylsäure, insbesondere 2,0 bis 3,0 Mol Olefin pro Mol Salicylsäure. Neutrale und basische Salze mehrwertiger Metalle können aus diesen Alkylsalicylsäuren nach den in der Literatur für diese Umwandlung beschriebenen Methoden hergestellt werden, gerade so wie bei der Herstellung der Alkylsalicylsäuren über den Phenol- und o-Alkylphenolsyntheseweg. Die Basisschmieröle, die für die Herstellung des Schmieröls der Erfindung verwendet werden, können Mineralschmieröle verschiedener Viskositäten oder synthetische Schmieröle und fette Öle enthaltende Schmieröle sein. Die beschriebenen Schmiermittelzusätze können auch Schmierfetten einverleibt werden. Die Erfindung ist für die Qualitätsverbesserung von Mineralschmierölen oder Mischungen davon besonders interessant. Die Alkylsali- cylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle können dem Basis- schmieröl entweder als solche oder in der Form eines Konzentrats zugesetzt werden, das beispielsweise durch Mischen der Salze mit einer kleinen Menge Öl erhältlich ist. Die Konzentration der beschriebenen Metallsalze kann in den Schmiermitteln innerhalb weiter Grenzen variieren. Im allgemeinen wird die gewünschte Dispergier-Wirkung erreicht, wenn die Schmiermittel 0,01 bis 5 Gew.-%, insbesondere 0,1 bis 1.0 Gew.-%, mehrwertiges Metall in der Form der beschriebenen Alkylsalicylsäuresalze mehrwertiger Metalle enthalten. Die Schmiermittel der Erfindung können neben den Alkylsalicylsäuresalzen mehrwertiger Metalle noch andere Zusätze enthalten, wie Antioxydantien, Schauminhibitoren, Korrosionsinhibitoren, Mittel zur Verbesserung der Viskosität und/oder des Viskositätsindex, Mittel zur Verbesserung der Schmieröl winkung und andere Stoffe, die man üblicherweise Schmiermitteln zusetzt. Die Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung. Es wurden folgende elf Salze hergestellt: 1. Calciumsalz von 3-Cetyl-5-methylsalicylsäure; Basizität 0% 2. Calciumsalz von 3-CSetyl-5-methylsalicylsäure; Basizität 26% 3. Calciumsalz von 3 -Cetyl-5-methylsalicylsäure; Basizität 37% 4. Calciumsalz von 3-Cetylsalicylsäure, Basizität 40% 5. Calciumsalz von 5-Cetylsalicylsäure, Basizität 0% 6. Calciumsalz von 3,5-Dicetylsalicylsäure; Basizität 28% 7. Calciumsalz von 3,5-dicetyl-4-hydroxybenzoesäure; Basizität 25% 8. Calciumsalz eines Gemisches von Mono- und Dicetyl salicylsäuren, das zu 18 Mol.-% aus 3-Cetylsalicyl säure, zu 46 Mol.-% aus 5-Cetylsalicylsäure und zu 36 Mol.-% aus 3,5-Dicetylsalicylsäure besteht; Basizität 54% 9. Calciumsalz von 3 -Dodecyl-5-methylsalicylsäure: Basizität 44% 10. Calciumsalz von 3-Docosyl-5-methylsalicylsäure; Basizität 35% 11. Calciumsalz von 3,5-Dioctylsalicylsäure; Basizität 37%. Die Wirksamkeit von Lösungen dieser elf Salze bei einer Konzentration entsprechend 0,15 Gew.-% Calcium in einem üblichen Schmieröl wurde mit Hilfe des Cater pillar-Kurzzeit-Hochtemperatur-Tests (Schmiermittel 1 bis 11) ermittelt. Die Testbedingungen waren wie folgt: Motor: Caterpillar-Einzylinder-Viertakt-Dieselmotor, ge kühlt mit Äthylenglykol, Bohrung 130,18 mm; Hub 165,1 mm Drehzahl: 1800 U/Min Leistungsabgabe: 45,5 PS Kühlflüssigkeitstemperatur: 850C Öltemperatur: 950C Ansauglufttemperatur: 450C Ansaugluftdruck: 1340 Torr Geprüfte Schmierölmenge: 5000 g Kraftstoff: Gasöl mit einem Schwefelgehalt von etwa 1 Gew.-% Versuchsdauer: 48 Stunden. Bei dieser Prüfung wurde das Ausmass an Kolbenverschmutzung gemessen. Zum Vergleich wurde ein Schmieröl aus dem gleichen Basisschmieröl hergestellt, das wiederum 0,15 Gew.-% Calcium in der Form von Calciumalkylsalicylat enthielt. Dieses Calciumalkylsalicylat war jedoch aus einem Gemisch von C14 bis C18 Alkylsalicylsäuren in grosstechni schem Massstab hergestellt worden, die nur zu etwa 50 Mol.-% aus Säuren bestanden, die am Benzolkern eine Alkylgruppe in p-Stellung zur Hydroxylgruppe trugen. Dieses Calciumalkylsalicylat hatte eine Basizität von 50%. Parallel zu jedem Motortest der vorgenannten elf Schmieröle wurde ein Motortest mit dem Vergleichsöl durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse dieser Motortests wurden in Tabelle I zusammengestellt. Die Schmieröle 4X), 7x), 9x) und 111x' fallen nicht in den Rahmen dieser Erfindung, wohl aber die anderen. Bei den Motortests wurde nur ein Bewegungsunterschied von 0,3 und mehr als signifikant betrachtet. Die Herstellung und Zusammensetzung der Salze wird nachstehend kurz beschrieben. 1. Salicylsäure als Ausgangsstoff Salicylsäure wurde bei 1200C mit einem Gemisch von C14 bis C18-Olefinen (Mol-Verhältnis 1: 2,5) mit BF3 als Katalysator (1,5 Mol BF3 pro Mol Salicylsäure) alkyliert Dabei wurden aus einem Mol Salicylsäure 0,73 Mol Alkylsalicylsäuren der folgenden Zusammensetzung erhalten: 18 Mol.-% 3-(14-Cls)-Alkylsalicylsäure 46 Mol.-% 5-(Cl-CI8)- -Alkylsalicylsäure 36 Mol.-% 3,5-Di(C14-C18)- -Alkylsalicylsäure EMI3.1 82 Mol.-% p-substituiert Die erhaltene Alkylsalicylsäuren wurden in ihre Calciumsalze umgewandelt, die eine Basizität von 50 bzw. 200% hatten. 2. p- oder o-Kresol als Aiisgangsstoff p- oder o-Kresol wurde bei 200- 2200C mit einem Gemisch von C14-C1#-Olefinen (Mol-Verhältnis 1,3 :1) unter Verwendung von 5 Gew.- % saurem Ton als Katalysator alkyliert. Die so erhaltenen Alkylphenole wurden in die entsprechende Alkylsalicylsäuren durch Phenolatbildung, Carboxylierung und Hydrolyse umgewandelt. Dabei wurden aus einem Mol p- oder o-Kresol 0,65 Mol Alkylsalicylsäuren erhalten, die praktisch aus 100 Mol.-% 3-(C14-Cl8)-Alkyl-5-methylsalicylsäure bzw. 3 -Methyl-5- -(C14-C1#)-alkylsalicylsäure bestanden. Die aus p-Kresoi erhaltenen Alkylsalicylsäuren wurden in Calciumsalze mit einer Basizität von 200%, jene aus o-Kresol erhaltenen in Calciumsalze mit einer Basizität von 50 bzw. 200% umgewandelt. 3. Phenol als A usgangsstoft Phenol wurde bei 1500C mit Ceten (Mol-Verhältnis 1 : 2,5) unter Verwendung von 5 Gew.-% saurem Ton als Katalysator alkyliert. Die so erhaltenen Alkylphenole wurden in die entsprechenden Alkylsalicylsäuren durch Phenolatbildung, Carboxylierung und Hydrolyse überführt. Dabei wurden aus einem Mol Phenol 0,65 Mol Alkylsalicylsäuren der folgenden Zusammensetzung erhaften: 12 Mol.-% 3-Cetylsalicylsäure 12 Mol.-% 5-Cetylsalicylsäure } 88 Mol.-% 76 Mol.-% 3,5-Dicetylsalicylsäure p-substituiert Die erhaltenen Alkylsalicylsäuren wurden in Calcium salze mit einer Basizität von 200% umgewandelt. Die Wirksamkeit von Lösungen dieser sechs Verbindungen bei einer Konzentration von 0,15 Gew.-% Calcium wurde im gleichen Schmieröl ermittelt, das für die elf Salze im Caterpillar-Kurzzeit-Hochtemperatur-Test verwendet wurde, (Schmiermittel 12-17). Zum Vergleich wurden zwei Schmieröle aus dem gleichen Basisschmier öl hergestellt, das wiederum 0,15 Gew.-% Calcium in der Form von Calciumalkylsalicylat enthielt. Ein Schmieröl war das Vergleichsöl, das bereits bei der Prüfung der ersten elf Salze verwendet wurde und das ein Calciumsalz mit einer Basizität von 50% enthielt (Vergleichsöl 1), das andere Schmieröl enthielt ein Calciumsalz mit einer Basizität von 200%, das jedoch auch aus den gleichen Alkylsalicylsäuren wie das Calciumsalz im Vergleichsöl 1 hergestellt worden war (Vergleichsöl 2). Parallel zu jedem Motortest der vorgenannten sechs Schmieröle wurde ein Motortest mit einem der Vergleichsöle durchgeführt. - PATENTANSPRUCH Schmiermittel, gekennzeichnet durch einen Gehalt an einem oder mehreren Salzen mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren, die mindestens eine Alkylgruppe mit mehr als 12 Kohlenstoffatomen enthalten und von denen mehr als 60 Mol.-% am Benzolring eine Alkylgruppe in p-Stellung zur Hydroxylgruppe tragen.UNTERANSPRÜCHE 1. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es basische Salze mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren enthält.2. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch und Unteranspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es basische Salze mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren mit einer Basizität unter 250% enthält.3. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch und den Unteransprüchen 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es basische Salze mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren mit einer Basizität zwischen 50 und 200% enthält.4. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch und den Unteransprüchen I bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es Salze zweiwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren enthält.5. Schmiermittel nach Unteranspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es Erdalkalimetallsalze enthält.6. Schmiermittel nach den Unteransprüchen 4 und 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es Calciumsalze enthält.7. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch und den Unteransprüchen 1 bis 6, gekennzeichnet durch einen Gehalt an einem oder mehreren Salzen mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalisylsäuren, die mindestens eine Alkylgruppe mit 14 bis 18 Kohlenstoffatomen enthalten.8. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch und den Unteransprüchen 1 bis 7, gekennzeichnet durch einen Gehalt an einem oder mehreren Salzen mehrwertiger Metalle von Alkylsalicylsäuren, von denen mehr als 70 Mol.-% am Benzolring eine Alkylgruppe in p-Stellung zur Hydroxylgruppe tragen.9. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es als Basisöl ein Mineralschmieröl oder ein Gemisch von Mineralschmierölen enthält.10. Schmiermittel nach Patentanspruch, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es 0,01 bis 5 Gew.-%, insbesondere 0,1 bis 1,0 Gew.-%, mehrwertiges Metall in der Form eines Alkylsalicylsäuresalzes eines mehrwertigen Metalls enthält.
