Stabilize material.

The expression alkyl or alkone is understood to mean a group which contains a branched or straight hydrocarbon chain of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, inclusive. Representative for such groups are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, tert-butyl,
Octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, octadecyl and eico syl. Lower alkyl means a branched or straight-chain alkyl radical having 1 to about 6 carbon atoms.

From formula I it can be seen that the alkanoyl portion of these polyamides has a lower-alkyl-p phenolic group. This phenolic group has at least one lower alkyl group in relation to the hydroxyl group. A second lower alkyl group (R1) is optionally either (a) in the other ok position to the hydroxyl group or (b) in the m position to the hydroxy and p position to the first lower alkyl group. The di-lower-alkyl-p-phenolic groups are preferred, e.g. B. R1 is lower alkyl and, although not limited to, the lower alkyl groups on the p-phenolic groups are preferably branched groups such as tertiary butyl.

However, other arrangements, such as a 3-tert-butyl-6-methyl-hydroxyphenyl or a 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl group, are included.

From the above description it can be seen in connection with the formula I that the polyamines from which the polyamides which can be used according to the invention are derived contain at least two amine groups which are each separated from one another by at least one polyvalent hydrocarbon chain of at least 2 carbon atoms.

Compounds with 2 to 4 amide units of the formula I and a polyvalent hydrocarbon chain can be given by the formula II:

When both of the free valencies of the nitrogen atom of each of the amide units of formula I are linked to the same or different polyvalent hydrocarbon chains. the amines from which these amides are derived are nitrogen-containing heterocycles. If both valencies of a given amide unit are linked to the same hydrocarbon chain, the chain will be branched and at least tetravalent, e.g. B. the tetravalent hydrocarbon chain 3,6-diethylenoctamethylene, as it is present in the diamide, which is derived from 4,4'-trimethylene dipiperidine. Alternatively, each of the two valence bonds of the amidein> .eit to a different divalent hydrocarbon chain, e.g.

  B. two ethylene chains, be bound - as is the case for the diamide derived from piperazine or an ethylene chain and a propylene chain, as found in homopiperazine.

Amines from which such polyamides are derived include N, N, N ', N'-tetrakis- (2-aminoethyl) -ät hylendtamin.

While the above amines from which these polyamides are derived, in the form of various stereoisomers, e.g. B. optical isomers, and / or geometric isomers, may be present, this does not affect the properties of the end product polyamides. Thus, either a mixture of such isomers or the separate isomers themselves can be subjected to the process described here without the properties of the resulting end product polyamides being significantly changed.

These alkylhydroxyphenylaic acid amides of polyamines are stabilizers for non-textile organic substances that are normally subject to oxidative decomposition by light and / or heat. Non-textile fabrics so stabilized in accordance with the present invention include synthetic organic polymeric substances such as vinyl resins formed by polymerizing vinyl halides or by copolymerizing vinyl halides with unsaturated polymerizable compounds, e.g. B.

Vinyl esters,, d-unsaturated ketones, a, ss <unsaturated Aldell, yden and unsaturated hydrocarbons such as butadienes and styrene; Poly-α-olefins such as poly-ethylene, polypropylene, poly-butylene, polyisoprene and copolymers of poly-α-olefins; Polyurethanes such as are made from polyols and organic poly visocyanates; Polyamides, such as polyhexamethylene adipamide; Polyesters' such as polymethylene terephthalate:

Other non-textile fabrics stabilized in accordance with the present invention include lubricating oils of the aliphatic ester type, e.g. B. In general, the stabilizers which can be used according to the invention are used in amounts of from about 0.005 to about 10% by weight, based on the stabilized composition, although this may vary depending on the particular substrate. A particularly preferred range is about 0.1 to 10 / o. The compounds are particularly useful in stabilizing polyamides and polycaprolactams. They can be added to the polymerization formulation and are useful in achieving a polymer of the required molecular weight and also in preventing discoloration and degradation during the polymerization. the subsequent processing and use extremely effective.

They can also be mixed in after the polymerization or sprayed onto the surface of films for effective stabilization.

These compounds can also be used together with other additives. like anti-objection. in particular sulfur-containing esters such as distearthiodinodionate and diiumthiodiprnpionate. sticking point depressants. Alternatively, the polyamine and the acid halide, generally the acid chloride, are allowed to react in an inert organic solvent, preferably in the presence of an organic or inorganic base, which serves as an acid-binding agent, to produce the corresponding acid halide.

The following examples serve to further illustrate the invention without, however, restricting it.

   example 1
A mixture of 128.6 g of methyl 3- (3,5-ditert.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate and 23.2 g of 1,6 hexamethylenediamine are mixed together with stirring and under nitrogen for 3 1/2 hours for 150 bis 155 C heated, the evolving methanol being separated in a moisture trap. The temperature is then increased for 11/2 hours to 160 to 1900, the conversion taking place up to about 86%. After final heating for 21/2 hours at 5 to 10 mm pressure at 200 ° C., the mixture is cooled and dissolved in 550 ml of benzene.

The product 1,6Bis- r3- (3,5-di-tert. Butyl-4-hydroxyph, enyl) -propionamido] -hexane solidifies, is collected by filtration and further purified by recrystallization from benzene, mp 15156o.

Repeated recrystallization from benzene / cyclohexane 2: 3 increases the melting point to 150159o.

This product is alternatively produced by reacting 1,6-hexamethyldiamine with 2 molar equivalents of 3- (3,5-di-tert-butyl4-hydroxyphenyl) propionyl chloride in the presence of an acid-binding agent such as potassium carbonate.

In the same way, by replacing the methyl 3- (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate in the first process of this example with esters such as methyl-3- (3-methyl-4 -Hvdroxy-5 tert: butylDhenyl) -proDionatt methyl 3- (3: 5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) -propionate, ethyl-.X- (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4- hydroxyphenyl) isobutyrate, methyl 3.5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl acetate and ethyl 2- (3.5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) pro-dionate, all prepared, for example, according to the processes of the USA Patent 3 330 859, each 1,6-bis [3- (3-methyl-4-hydroxy-5-tert-butylphenyl) propionamidol-hexone. 1,6-bis-r3- (3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) -propionamido] -hexane, 1,6-bis - [?

A stabilized mineral oil composition is made by incorporating 0.005 wt / o 1,6-bis- [3- (3-metl, yl-4-hydroxy-5-tert-butylphenyl) propionamido] hexane into a refined mineral oil of 183 S.U.S. manufactured at 38 C (100 "F) Regal Oil B, Texas Company).

   Example 10
Stabilized lard is produced by incorporating 0.01% by weight of 1,2-bis- [3- (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionamido] ethane into lard.

  The lard with and without the stabilizer is tested by the Oxygen Induction Period Method (ASTM D525-55) with the following changes: 15 parts of a lard sample are tested;
The end point is defined as the mean point in the first hour that a pressure drop of 0.14 kg / cm- (2 lbs. Per square inch) or more is observed, followed by an equivalent or greater drop in the following hour. The unstabilized lard is attacked after 108 minutes.

Stabilized cottonseed oil is produced when 0.01 Ges.0 o of this steel stabilizer is incorporated into a refined cotton oil. The unstabilized oil is attacked after 282 minutes.

   Example 17
Stabilized gasoline is produced by incorporating 0.05% by weight of 1,4-bis-f3- (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-dhenyl) propionamidomethyl] cyclohexane into gasoline that does not contain any additives or stabilizers . The gasoline with and without stabilizer is tested according to the method for determining the oxygen induction period in the bomb (ASTM D 525-55). with the result that the petrol with stabilizer is not attacked after 425 minutes, while the pure one is attacked after 250 minutes.

   Example 12
Paraffin wax with a melting point of 5254 "C (125-128" F) is made by incorporating 0.001% by weight of tetrakis [3 (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionamidomethyl] - methane stabilized. The effective stabilization achieved in this way is explained by the following investigation. The paraffin wax with stabilizer is heated for 18 hours at 121 "in the presence of air. Unstabilized wax is also heated in the same manner. After 18 hours, the stabilized wax has no noticeable odor. The unstabilized wax, however, has a distinct odor.

   Example 13
A stabilized high-temperature lubricating oil is prepared by incorporating 2% by weight of N, N'-bis [3- (3,5-di tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionyl] piperaziii into the lubricant which contains diisoamyl adipate . The stabilized composition is compared to the unstabilized lubricant by heating to 1750 in the presence of air and metallic catalysts, according to the testing method described in Military Specification Mil-L-7808c. To.

For 72 hours the pure lubricating oil contains 83% sludge and its viscosity has increased very sharply. The stabilized lubricant, however, is slightly less viscous than the original and contains little sludge.

   Example 14
High impact polystyrene resin, the elastomer (i.e.

Butadiene / styrene), against the loss of elongation properties by incorporating 0.5% by weight of N, N, N-tris- (2- [3- (3,5-di-tert. Butyl-4- hydroxy phenyl) propionamido] - ethyl) amine stabilized. Under the test conditions described below, the stabilized resin retains a higher percentage of its original elongation properties, whereas the non-stabilized resin retains less elongation properties.

The non-stabilized resin is dissolved in chloroform and then the stabilizer is added, after which the mixture is poured onto a glass plate and the solvent is evaporated to give a uniform film, which is removed and cut open on drying and then for 7 minutes at a temperature of 1630 and a pressure of 1406 kg / cm- is pressed to a film of uniform thickness (0.63 mm). The foils are then cut into strips approximately 91.6 x 12.7 mm (4 x 0.5 inches). Some of these strips are then measured for longitudinal elongation in the Instron tensile tester (Instron Engineering Corporation, Quincy, Mass., USA).

The remaining portion of the strips is aged in a through-air oven for 6 weeks at 75 "and then examined for elongation.

Similar results are obtained with a terpolymer made from acrylonitrile / butadiene / styrene.

   Example 15
A mixture of 1 kg of polyoxymethylene diacetate (molecular weight of about 30,000), 5 g of N, N ', N'-tris [3- (3,5-di-fert.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionyl] diethylenetriamine and 2 g of dicyanodiamide is extruded at 220. For this mass, the decomposition, measured by the weight loss, is less significant during prolonged heating to 230 ° C. than for an identical mass, but in the absence of the stabilizer.

Example 16 Imine mixture of 1M nylon 6,6 salt I (hexamethylene diamine adipate), 0.01 M hexamethylene diamine and 1% by weight 1,6-bis [3- (3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) - propionamido] hexane is poured into a polymerization tube and heated for one hour at 220 and atmospheric pressure. The temperature is then increased to 285 and the pressure is slowly reduced to 1 mm.

The tube is held at these conditions for 30 minutes, cooled and purged with nitrogen.
The polyhexamethylene adipate stabilized in this way shows less color development and less weight loss after heating for 65 hours than is the case with a non-stabilized sample.
