Abstract

A process for producing a relatively rigid article having a predetermined shape from a relatively soft resionus polymer deformable at room temp., which is subsequently hardened. The process is useful for making hollow articles such as pipes or tanks in a flexible form which may easily be transported and can be rendered rigid in situ. The resinous polymeric material pref. consists of a normally rigid material rendered flexible by adding plasticiser, the hardening being carried out by extracting the plasticiser or chemically hardening it. The polymer may be ABS resin, acrylic resin, polyamide, polyolefin, fluorinated polyolefins or pref. PVC.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for the manufacture of rigid, self-supporting hollow bodies made of poly mers or polymerizable resins.

Shaped bodies used for pipe purposes, such as pipes, hoses or the like, are generally made of an easily deformable material such as rubber and flexible thermoplastic resins, so that the mobility during use and storage is possible in a compact form, or of rigid, self-supporting materials such as metal, concrete and rigid polymer resins, which do not collapse due to their own weight or due to external loads; the latter type includes water pipes, sewage lines, conditioning pipes, large liquid containers, channels and. like

In the case of rigid lines with a large diameter, for example sewage, irrigation or Ent watering lines and channels, the production is generally carried out in a central construction site, then the parts are brought to the installation site by truck. A large part of the costs of such rigid lines lies in the high expenses for storage and transport of the line parts from the place of manufacture to the place of installation, in particular because of the large volume of the rigid line. Lines with flexible or deformable walls cannot be used because of their disadvantageous mechanical and physical properties.

The present invention relates to a process for the production of rigid, self-supporting hollow bodies from polymeric or polymerizable resins, which is characterized in that the hollow body is first made in the predetermined shape from a relatively soft and deformable polymer resin at room temperature, and then in a compact form can collapse and only at the place of use does an expansion of this body and a stabilization of its shape by curing the soft resin.

The hollow bodies can be used, for example, for drainage lines, sewer lines, other lines, containers and the like. Like., Their storage, handling and transportation prior to installation and final use is facilitated by this method. The process is simple, cheap and can be adapted to a wide variety of applications.

According to one embodiment of the method, the hollow body is formed from a resin composition which suitably contains a thermoplastic polymeric resin, preferably polyvinyl chloride, and a plasticizer. The plasticizer can, with appropriate treatment, for example when heated, cause the resin to harden, or a plasticizer can be used which can be leached or extracted from the hollow body by solvents, whereby the hollow body hardens, or both types of plasticizers can be used . The hollow body, z. B. a conduit element, is preferably reinforced by fibers, either by randomly distributed fibers, or by fiber webs that can consist of knitted or non-woven fabrics. As reinforcing fibers, natural fibers, such as. B.

Cotton or synthetic fibers such as nylon, orion, polyester or polyolefins are used. In addition to the base material, the resin composition can contain further additives such as stabilizers, inhibitors effective in the heat or initiators effective in the heat.

Polyvinyl chloride can be wholly or partially replaced by other thermoplastic polymer resins, such as. B. by ABS resin (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), acrylic resins, polyamides, polyolefins, fluorinated polyolefins and the like. The like. As heat-effective or thermosetting plasticizers, materials such as urea resin, melamine resin, epoxy resin, silicone resin, allyl ester, acrylic ester, unsaturated polyester and the like can advantageously be used. Like. Are used in a known manner, for. B. be added as a monomer, dimer or polymer or mixtures thereof. Typical examples of extractable plasticizers are phthalate plasticizers, e.g. B.

Dioctyl phthalate, and other known plasticizers in this group. When using a thermosetting plasticizer, the resin composition expediently contains a reaction initiator which is active in the heat, e.g. B. an organic peroxide such as benzoyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, tert-butyl perbenzoate. The mixture can also contain a hardening inhibitor or a thermally active reaction modifier such as hydroquinone. In addition, stabilizers and other additives can be present in the resin mixture.

The product of the first stage, i.e. the soft, flexible and deformable product can be used in any way, e.g. B. by extrusion, casting, and other known methods. The amounts of plasticizer of the thermosetting or non-thermosetting type or of both, as well as of other additives, are selected such that the product of the first stage is at room temperature, i.e. at room temperature. H. at 20 'C, has the flexibility to allow folding, folding, winding and the like. Like. Allowed at a later return to the fully expanded form. The product of the first stage should be able to be stored folded up practically for longer periods of time.

The respective proportions of the individual components of the resin composition depend on the compounds in question and the dimensions of the product; they can be determined easily and quickly by a person skilled in the art.

If the resin composition contains a thermosetting plasticizer, the production of the product of the first stage should take place at a temperature which does not cause the plasticizer to harden, and advantageously below 180 ° C., preferably below 175 ° C. The product of the first stage, for example a pipe, is collapsed and transported to the installation site in the compact state thus obtained. There the tube is expanded, preferably under its own elasticity, to the desired expanded state; then he follows the curing.

If the resin composition contains a thermosetting plasticizer, heating is carried out to the hardening temperature of this plasticizer; H. to more than 180 and preferably 190 to 200 C until the product has reached the desired rigidity. When non-thermosetting plasticizers are used, the plasticizer is completely or partially removed from the product until the desired hardness or rigidity is achieved, for example by extraction or leaching of the desired amount of hardening agent with a solvent for the plasticizer which the resin composition does not adversely changed. Can be used e.g. B. Mineral oils or other known solvents that do not dissolve the main polymer resin.

When working with both types of plasticizer, the desired amount of the non-thermosetting plasticizer is optionally extracted with a solvent such that the thermosetting plasticizer is not extracted, then the resin composition is heated in order to effect the curing of the thermosetting plasticizer.

The resin material from which the hollow body is formed can later be made relatively rigid by modifying one of its components, for example by polymerisation, crosslinking, condensation, condensation polymerisation or decomposition polymerisation. In this case, the composition expediently contains a catalyst for the later desired reaction, which is relatively inactive under normal conditions, and curing takes place by activating the catalyst by heating or in some other physical or chemical manner.

The primary ingredients of the curable resin composition include monomeric and / or polymeric olefinic hydrocarbons such as polyethylene, polyester and. like

The proportions of main polymer resin and plasticizers as well as initiators, inhibitors and other additives depend on the respective compounds, the type and dimensions of the product, the desired flexibility and the softness of the aftertreated end product. The parameters in the manufacture of the flexible first-stage product and the post-curing depend on the resin composition, the dimensions, the method of manufacture, the desired flexibility of the first-stage product and the hardness and rigidity of the final product. Quantities and parameters can easily be determined by a person skilled in the art. The hardness (Shore hardness D) of the product of the first stage is expediently not more than 50 and preferably 35 to 45, the hardness (Shore hardness D) of the end product is more than 60 and preferably 75 to 85.

The hardening stage should expediently increase the Shore hardness D of the product by at least 10 and preferably 30 to 50 units.

The method according to the invention allows the production and installation of pipes, lines, hoses or containers, all of large dimensions, without high costs for the storage and transport of these parts. The product of the first stage is in a flexible or soft state and can be stored, packaged and transported in a compact form.

The invention is explained below with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a pipe produced according to the invention.

The tube 3 consists of the cylindrical tube part or the matrix 2 made of polymer resin, in which a fabric 1 made of natural fibers or synthetic fibers is embedded, this being soaked in the polymer resin and connected to it. The material 1 does not have to be woven, rather a knitted fabric or fleece can be used instead of a woven fabric. It can also be reinforced with continuous fibers or staple fibers.

The tube 3 in the first or uncured stage is soft and flexible enough to collapse easily and to be folded and wound up under little pressure. In this way it can be stored, packed and transported cheaply.

At the installation point, the pipe or hose 3 is unwound and guided back under its own elasticity in the expanded state shown in the drawing. The desired rigidity is then established in the manner described above. If the resin composition contains a thermosetting plasticizer, the tube is heated to the hardening temperature of the plasticizer until it reacts sufficiently to cure the tube 3. If a non-thermosetting plasticizer is present, a sufficient amount of it is removed by means of a solvent to bring about the rigid state, and if both types of plasticizers are present, the non-thermosetting plasticizer is first extracted in whole or in part, followed by the hardening of the thermosetting plasticizer.
