Description

Fig. 1 eine Gesamtansicht der Vorrichtung,

The present invention relates to a method and a device for producing a longitudinally watertight telecommunication cable with plastic-insulated wires, in which the cavities of the cable core are filled with a sealing material that adheres well to the insulation of the wires and to the outer jacket surrounding the cable core.

The method is used in particular for the production of telecommunications bundle cables.

In contrast to cables that are provided with paper-insulated cores, and in which water that has penetrated the cable core can only propagate in the longitudinal direction at distances caused by the swelling of the paper, the disadvantage of plastic-insulated cores is that water, which once penetrates the cable core has penetrated, can spread on the insulation of the wires in the longitudinal direction like a channel and in this way the electrical properties of the cable are significantly impaired. For this reason, one has now switched to making such telecommunication cables longitudinally watertight in their core by filling all cavities of the cable core with a sealing material made of plastic, for example polyurethane, which is used both with the insulation of the cores and with the core surrounding jacket is firmly connected.

In this way, once water has penetrated, it can at least no longer spread in the longitudinal direction of the cable.

More recently, a technique has become known in which a vaseline-like mass, that is to say a mass that is low-viscosity at a higher temperature and highly viscous at a low temperature, is introduced into the cable core for sealing. The procedure here is that this mass is applied in a still flowable state before or during the stranding process, for example of individual bundles in bundled cables, and adheres to the veins due to its adhesive properties. The disadvantage of such a procedure is, on the one hand, the relatively high mechanical complexity, since a heating device for the mass, a refill vessel and also a circulating device for this sealing mass have to be attached for each stranding nipple.

The decisive disadvantage of this method, however, is that all subsequent devices such as nipples and summarizing coils, ligaments and intestines are contaminated by the material due to the pretreated elements of the after-string. . be permanently cleaned or even replaced rnw ss i; arz given off by the pollution of the operating staff.

The invention bezv .-: -'- ± t to create a method and a device for the production of a longitudinally watertight telecommunication cable, which compared to the known methods described is significantly simplified and also cleaner in its operation.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that the completely stranded cable core for applying the sealing material is passed through a chamber which is provided with two tubular expansions equipped with passage openings for the passage of the cable core, that in the chamber the sealing material is under pressure in and around the cable core is pressed so that the tubular extensions are cooled during the passage of the cable core, and that the outer jacket is applied to the cable core after it has emerged from the expansion of the chamber on the outlet side.

The device for carrying out the method according to the invention is characterized by a chamber with two tubular extensions equipped with passage openings for the passage of the cable core, a cooling device for cooling the extensions and an extruder for sheathing the cable core.

An exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention and the method according to the invention are described below with reference to the drawing.

The drawing shows an embodiment of the device, namely show
1 shows an overall view of the device,
2 shows the chamber with the tubular extensions and additional devices,
3 shows, on an enlarged scale, a passage opening with a cooling device,
4 shows a section through a cable manufactured according to the method according to the invention.

A fully stranded cable core 2 is pulled off a cable drum 1. This cable core 2 is then guided into a chamber 3 which has tubular extensions 4 and 5. After exiting the expansion 5 on the output side, the cable core 2 is passed through an extruder 6 in which the cable jacket is applied.

The finished telecommunication cable is then wound onto the drum 7, which also serves as a take-off for the cable.

The chamber 3 with the tubular extensions 4 and 5 is shown in more detail in FIG. It consists of a vessel 8 in which the vaseline-like mass, i.e. the sealing material, is kept at a certain temperature at which it is still liquid. At the same time, a compressor is provided in the device 8, by means of which the sealing material, for example at 2 atmospheres, is pressed into the pressure head 9 of the chamber and is thus pressed into and around the cable core 2. Since the cable core does not have a circular cross-section after the stranding process, but on the contrary has a constantly changing cross-section with indentations, the print head 9 of the vessel 8 cannot be sealed with conventional sealing means, but a special technique must be used here.

On the print head 9, the tubular extensions 4 and 5 are accordingly attached, which are constantly cooled. For this purpose, the chambers 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 are provided on the tubular extension 5, through which a coolant circuit is guided according to the dash-dotted line. A particularly suitable coolant here is water. As can be seen from Fig. 3 in section and on a larger scale, these chambers, here using the example of chamber 13, are equipped in their interior with passage openings 15 which are matched to the diameter of the cable core to be treated. These passage openings can also be referred to as nipples and only let through a certain amount of the sealing material applied to the cable core, the opening diameter of the nipple becoming smaller and smaller with increasing distance from the printhead 9.

The cooling process in the chambers 10 to 14 now ensures that the sealing compound that is still liquid in the printhead 9 cools down quickly and in this way, in cooperation with the passage openings 15 of the cooling chambers, virtually seals itself off from the printhead 9. At the end of the tube-like enlargement 5 there emerges a filled or filled with sealing material.

filled round cable core 2, which can then be provided with the cable sheath 25.

The same sealing problem occurs on the input side of the print head 9 as on the output side. The tubular extension 4 is therefore initially provided in a longer area 16 with a double wall, in which cooling takes place, also with the aid of water.

The coolant circuit is again indicated here with a dash-dotted line. This cooling pipe 16 is followed by further cooling chambers 17 and 18, which are designed in exactly the same way as the cooling chambers of the tubular extension 5. In this way, penetration of the liquid vaseline-like sealing compound is also prevented on the inlet side, since it is already in the cooling pipe 16 it is cooled to the extent that it becomes solid and thus achieves the required seal.

In order to ensure that the vaseline-like sealing compound does not become so strong that the device cannot start again when the device is at a standstill, the cooling must be canceled and replaced by heating at the moment when the cable core or cable is switched off will. For example, a flow heater 19 can be used for this purpose, which ensures that the cooling water which is supplied via the line 20 is now heated by switching the valves 21 and 22 and the chambers of the tubular extensions 4 and 5 are now heated, see above that the sealing material remains liquid.

In a special embodiment of a communication cable which can be produced with the method according to the invention, a paper tape 23 is first applied to the cable core 2 provided with the sealing material immediately after it emerges from the tubular extension
The paper can advantageously be designed as crepe paper and is soaked in the vaseline-like mass fairly quickly, so it is very firmly attached to the cable core. In a further process step, a metal foil 24 coated on both sides with a copolymer of polyethylene, for example an aluminum foil, can then be arranged over the paper tape 23.

The polyethylene cable sheath 25 is then applied, which is firmly bonded to the copolymer of the metal foil 24 through the heating during the extrusion process and at the same time ensures that a firm connection to the paper tape 23 takes place on the other side.

The sealing material used should always be a compound such as Vaseline or petrolatum, which does not or hardly shrinks in a temperature range between 20 and 70 C.

This mass must be processable in such a way that at a temperature of 70 C it has such a viscosity that it can be introduced into the core of the cable core at pressures of up to 4 atmospheres in such a way that all cavities are filled. However, at a temperature of 20 C the mass should only stick viscously, but no longer be liquid.

With the method described, a telecommunication cable can be produced, the cable core of which is properly sealed, namely by the fact that the sealing compound seals itself through the cooling effect in the chambers and the special design of the passage openings or nipples in these chambers and thus the for the application of the sealant ensures the required pressure.

The advantage of the method described is that the sealing compound is only introduced into the already fully stranded cable core and immediately after exiting the device in which the sealing compound is applied, the sheathing of the cable core takes place, so that there is contamination any machine parts cannot enter. In addition, the effort is relatively low, since the finishing of the cable core can be carried out with conventional machines and the sealing material is applied centrally at a single point.
