A yarn winding device includes a clamping arrangement which, when the yarn is broken, is activated to retain the end of yarn passing from the supply package to prevent it returning towards the supply package and to maintain it in a position ready for piecing up. PreF. the yarn winding device includes a piecing up device and a testing device which may be mechanical or electrical and which breaks the yarn when a fault is detected. The testing device pref. actuates an electromagnetic driving or movable clamp pad of the clamping device, when the yarn is broken, so that the yarn end is clamped.
