Verwendbare Weichmacher umfassen Butylphthalylbutyl glykolat, Tributylzitrat, Acetyltributylzitrat, Trikresylphosphat,
Asbest, Magnesiumsilicat, Calciumsilicat, Magnesiumstearat,

A propellant is defined by the Chemical Specialties Manufacturers' Association as a liquid gas at a temperature of 40.5 ° C with a vapor pressure greater than 1 atmosphere. This category includes a broad class of organic compounds, some of which are hydrocarbons, but most of which are halogenated hydrocarbons having 1 or 2 carbon atoms and 1 or more chlorine, fluorine or bromine atoms. Often the same molecule contains different halogen atoms to achieve the desired vapor pressure.
Because of their high volatility, blowing agents have been used as pore-forming agents for many years in the manufacture of plastic moldings. Propellants are soluble in many synthetic resins and therefore can be absorbed in the solid resin, which is conveniently in finely divided form, whereupon the resin containing the absorbed propellant is subjected to heat and pressure. The propellant evaporates and a foam structure with closed cells is formed. U.S. Patent 3,335,101 shows the use of this process for making foams from chlorinated polyethylene.
U.S. Patents 2,387,730, 2,948,665 and 3,351,569 foam polyethylene and polypropylene in this manner, U.S. Patent 3,160,688 foamed polystyrene, U.S. Patent 3,352,802 foamed polyvinyl chloride, U.S. Patent
3,253,967 foams polyoxymethylene and U.S. Patent 3,305,497 foams polyurethanes. U.S. Patent 3,310,617 foams various thermoplastic resins by a similar but modified process to ensure that the blowing agent is uniformly dissolved or dispersed in the molten resin to overcome the difficult mixing problems of the prior art.
In these processes the amounts of blowing agent used are quite small, since only small amounts of blowing agent can be absorbed in the solid resin; the resin is melted to facilitate expansion of the structure when the propellant is volatilized in situ to form the cells.
The resin is then allowed to set before the structure can collapse so as to preserve the expansion
In U.S. Patent 3,072,583, foamed articles are made by extrusion molding of a perfluorocarbon resin in molten form containing 0.1-5% by weight of a fluoromethane. The fluoromethane dissolves in the resin at atmospheric pressure and room temperature and is volatilized under the extrusion conditions to form a foamed structure. This method is suitable for covering wire with a foamed coating.
A similar process for aliphatic olefin polymer blends is described in U.S. Patent 3,379,802 and in U.S. Patent 3,067,147 cellular polyethylene is made using 1,2-dichloro-1,1,2,2 tetrafluoroethane.
The manufacture of ultramicrocellular fibers with the aid of blowing agents has also been proposed. US Patents 3,227,664 and 3,227,784 describe a lightning extrusion process for this purpose. Pliable, ultra-microcellular shaped structures are obtained from synthetic organic crystalline polymers by adding an entrapped mixture of the polymer plus at least one activating liquid at a temperature and pressure at which a homogeneous solution is formed (the temperature being higher than the normal boiling point of the Liquid). This solution is then quickly extruded to a region of significantly lower pressure and temperature under such conditions that a very large number of bubble cores are present at the extrusion opening.
The evaporation of the activating liquid quickly cools the solution down to the temperature at which the polymer precipitates and solidifies in the polymer orientation brought about by the rapid extrusion and expansion process.
The activating liquids must meet several requirements, the most notable of which is that the liquid should dissolve less than 1% of the polymeric material at or below its boiling point. I.e. it is a non-solvent for the polymer at or below its boiling point, but a solvent for the polymer under extrusion conditions. To create bubble cores during the actual extrusion process, finely divided solid core-forming agent can be incorporated into the polymer solution. A suitable nucleating agent is silica airgel. In this way a structure with extremely small closed cells is achieved.
Modifications of this process are described in U.S. Patents 3,081,519, 3,375,211, and 3,384,531, and 3,375,212, 3,461,193, and 3,367,744.
Certain synthetic resins are soluble in blowing agents at room temperature. In US Pat. No. 2,716,637, it is pointed out that when these solutions evaporate quickly, fine bubbles of the plastic resin are obtained which initially retain sufficient solvent to have surface tack; as the solvent progresses out of the bubbles, they are raised or wavy and take on an unsatisfactory appearance.
In the latter patent this is avoided by combining a fatty acid with the resin / blowing agent solution and the resin content becomes quite low, i.e. H. in the range of 5 to about 12%. Similar mixtures are described in US Pat. No. 2,773,855, where it is pointed out that the particles obtained are in the form of small hollow or solid hemispheres with 1.6-6 mm in the largest dimension. Cohesive foamed masses are not obtained.
In US Pat. No. 3,419,506, a protective film coating or dressing for wounds is produced by converting a preparation of a film-forming vinyl acetate polymer or alkyl acrylate polymer, 10-50% by weight of a finely divided filler, based on from a pressurized container the solids, and a blowing agent, the solution having a viscosity of at least 1000 cps at normal room temperature. Has. According to the cited patent, the inert filler must be present for a satisfactory foamed application of the film-forming resin, whereby according to US Patents 3,227,784 and 3,227,664 the filler may serve as a nucleating agent and rather thin sticky films of a few tenths of a millimeter or less supplies.
According to the invention, structures such as application pads or pads (applicator pads) are created which are formed from propellant preparations including a film-forming synthetic resin in solution in the propellant. At atmospheric temperature and pressure, these preparations form cohesive, voluminous foamed (ie form from a matrix of the synthetic resin with open and / or closed cells in any desired ratio. The preparation can contain an additive which, when the propellant evaporates in the cells and / or walls (ie the resin matrix) of the structure and can sweat or bleed out of the structure or can be pressed out of this.
The structures according to the invention are therefore suitable as application pads for various materials, such as cosmetics, detergents and other cleaning agents, and astringents
The blowing agent preparations for the production of the foamed structures according to the invention can be shaped in open or closed molds under autogenous pressure at atmospheric temperature to give differently shaped foamed structures.
The present invention also provides a method of forming foamed structures from such propellant preparations which enables the relative proportions of open and closed cells in the resulting structure to be controlled.
The propellant preparations according to the invention comprise a film-forming synthetic resin in solution in a propellant with a boiling point below 70 ° C. at atmospheric pressure. The additive, which can then be deposited in the cells and / or walls of the foamed structure, can be present in solution in the propellant or be dispersed in it, or it can be present in solution or dispersion in a separate liquid phase, which is then itself in the Propellant phase of the preparation is dispersed. The additive can also be the only component of a separate liquid phase which is itself dispersed in the propellant phase of the preparation.
Thus, the propellant preparations according to the invention can be solutions or emulsions in which the propellant is the solvent in the continuous phase and another liquid or a liquid preparation or a solid is dispersed therein in a discontinuous phase. Since the propellant boils at a temperature below 70C, it is of course a vapor at room temperature and pressure. The propellant preparations according to the invention can therefore be stored in closed containers which can withstand the pressure of the propellant in order to keep the propellant in the liquid phase.
When the preparation is released to atmospheric pressure at room temperature, the propellant evaporates quickly and a coherent foamed structure with the additive is formed in the cells and / or walls.
According to the invention, it was found that the relative proportions of open and closed cells in the foamed structures according to the invention can be regulated in various ways. In the absence of an additive in a separate liquid phase, regulation is carried out by regulating the plasticity of the resin during the formation of the structure. If the resin is sufficiently plastic during the formation of the structure, then the cell walls are not torn open quickly and a structure is obtained in which all or largely all cells are closed. Indeed, torn cells heal in a sufficiently plasticized structure.
If the resin is relatively hard or brittle, all or part of the cell walls may be cracked in such a way that adjacent cells connect to one another to form interconnected cells or pores that extend throughout the structure. The plasticity can be regulated by adding a plasticizer for the resin and / or a solvent for the resin in addition to the blowing agent or by choosing the blowing agent. Propellants with relatively high K-B (kauri-butanol) values are usually retained more strongly than those with lower values and thus act more as volatile plasticizers. The relative strength or plasticity required for a given open or closed cell structure is determined empirically and practically.
If the propellant preparation contains an additive in a separate liquid phase which is emulsified in the propellant phase, then the relative open and closed cell ratios in the foamed structure of the present invention depend in part on the stability of the emulsion during formation of the structure. If the emulsion is unstable, the emulsified droplets will tend to converge and combine with one another, creating a structure with more open pores.
If a structure with open cells is still preferred, then the discontinuous liquid phase of the emulsion should expediently have a low surface tension, preferably below the critical surface tension for wetting the resin at least below 40 dynes per cm. Then the liquid phase tends to to spread over the available surfaces of the structure (inner and outer surfaces) and interferes with the healing of the torn pores, which keeps them open and connected to one another.
The resulting structure can have open and / or closed cells of any desired size from microcellular dimensions up to 1.25 cm in diameter or more. The open cells are actually closed cells, one or more walls of which are torn or ruptured to connect with adjacent pores; thus a network of pores or surface-to-surface passages or passages from surface to surface is formed. The liquid additive that was present in the resin propellant preparation before foaming is located in these cells or pores. In the case of solid additives, the solid additive can be in the cells or pores or in the resin matrix.
The resin structure consists of a network-like matrix made up of the walls that define the cells, and the relative plasticity or brittleness of this resin largely determines the proportion of the cell walls that are torn open. The thinness of the walls is also a factor which, however, cannot be easily controlled, except that it depends to some extent on the concentration of the resin in the propellant solution. In general, the more plasticized the resin, the thicker the cell walls.
If the plasticizer is volatile, plasticity can be reduced over time, thick-walled structures become more brittle, and the walls tear open when the structure is compressed or squeezed during use as an application pad, thereby releasing the material retained in the cells and making it more water-soluble or water-soluble solvent-soluble powder is possible by leaching with water or solvent.
The solvent should not attack the resin.
According to the invention it is therefore expedient to control the plasticity, even if only for the time necessary for foaming and shortly thereafter, by using a volatile plasticizer, since this allows the relative proportions of open cells and even the point in time at which the closed cells to be controlled Open cells. This control is achieved by controlling the amount and type of plasticizer to control both the amount of plasticization and the time that the resin is plasticized. The amount required will necessarily vary with the resin, blowing agent and plasticizer as well as the type of structure formed; Because of this number of variables, an empirical-practical determination is necessary for each case.
The resin blowing agent preparation is mixed with a plasticizer and / or a volatile solvent for the resin or a liquid which in the presence of the other components has a solvent or plasticizing effect on the resin, and the preparation is used to form a structure foamed. An additive can - but does not need to - be present if it does not also affect the plasticity. Then the structure can be examined for the number of open and closed cells present; if there are too many open cells the plasticity can be increased, while if there are too many closed cells it can be decreased. The correct structure can be achieved by adjusting the formulation of the resin propellant preparation.
In the presence of the additive, the determination can be made empirically as to the amount of additive that can be expelled from the structure.
Any volatile organic compound with a boiling point at atmospheric pressure below 7 C, which is inert to the synthetic resin and any additive that may be present in the preparation, can be used as a propellant in the preparations according to the invention.
So are hydrocarbons such as propane, n-butane and isobutane, as well as halogenated hydrocarbons such as vinyl chloride, methyl chloride, methyl bromide, dichlorodifluoromethane (Propellant 12), 1,1-dichloro-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane (Propellant 114), 1-chloro-1,1, -difluoroethane (Propellant 142B), 1, 1-difluoroethane (Propellant 152A), chlorodifluoromethane (Propellant 22), 1-chloro-1,1-difluoro-2,2-trifluoroethane (Freon 115), octafluorocyclobutane (Freon C318), a mixture of dichlorodifluoromethane and 1,1-difluoroethane (Freon 500), a mixture of chlorodifluoromethane and 1-chloro-1,1-difluoro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (Freon 502) are suitable .
The present invention is applicable to any synthetic resin which is soluble in a blowing agent of the above class or can be made soluble by the addition of a third material (e.g. a solvent or a material having solvent properties in combination) and which is further film-forming so that it tends to form a coherent mass after evaporation of the propellant solution. There can be used thermoplastic resins as a class, thermosetting resins in a blowing agent-soluble state of polymerization, and blowing agent-soluble crosslinkable resins. The polymerization or crosslinking of the last two types of resin can be carried out to cure the structure during or after its formation.
The blowing agents of the class mentioned include alkyl acrylate and alkyl methacrylate polymers and copolymers such as ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, isobutyl methacrylate, a 50/50 copolymer made from n-butyl / isobutyl methacrylate, a 25/75 copolymer made from lauryl / isobutyl methacrylate, a 30/70 Copolymer of stearyl / tert-butyl methacrylate, a 50/50 copolymer of ethyl / n-butyl methacrylate, copolymers of acrylic and vinyl compounds, such as a 50/50 vinyl toluene / isobutyl methacrylate copolymer, a 50/35/1 5-vinyl toluene / tert-butyl methacrylate / stearyl methacrylate terpolymer, a 50/50 ethyl acrylate / vinyl acetate copolymer, determines other vinyl polymers such as polyvinyl acetate, vinyl toluene-butadiene copolymers, carboxylated vinyl acetate,
certain cellulose derivatives such as ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate, cellulose acetate buryrate and cellulose acetate propionate, and certain silicone polymers such as Silicone XC-20997, soluble.
Resins which can be cured chemically or by irradiation to a solvent-insoluble state of polymerization include urethane polymers, unsaturated polyesters such as unsaturated alkyd resins, and polyolefins such as polybutylene and poly-2-methylbutene-1.
The polymer should have a molecular weight between about
10,000 to about 1,000,000. Polymers with molecular weights below about 10,000 may have insufficient cohesive strength to form a cohesive foamed structure, while those with molecular weights above about 1,000,000 may be insoluble in the blowing agent solvents. Polymers with molecular weights between about 25,000 to about 600,000 are preferred.
The relative proportions of propellant and resin in the propellant preparations according to the invention largely determine the type of foamed structure formed when the pressure on the preparation is reduced to atmospheric pressure and the propellant is allowed to rapidly volatilize. If the resin content is too low (and usually the lower content is not less than about 1% by weight of resin, based on the blowing agent), a cohesive, foamed structure does not form, but a blistered, sticky, flowable mass. When the material is ejected as a spray through a fine opening, a large number of foamed particles are obtained which in some respects are similar to the jewelry particles of the aforementioned US Pat. Nos. 2,716,637 and 2,773,855.
If the proportion of blowing agent is too low, various difficulties arise because of the high viscosity of the resin-blowing agent solution and because of the toughness of the foamed structure obtained. So it is e.g. B. not only difficult to expel the preparation through a valve, but after use the valve easily clogs, or it shifts and leaks. If an additive is present in a separate liquid phase, not only is it difficult to achieve a reasonably stable emulsion of that phase in the propellant phase, but if separation occurs it is impossible to re-emulsify by hand shaking.
Usually, however, the preparation can contain up to 50% by weight of resin before the behavior is seriously impaired by the high resin content; in some cases up to 60% resin can be present, depending to some extent on the molecular weight of the resin and its solubility in the blowing agent used.
In addition to the propellant and the synthetic resin, which are the essential components of the propellant preparations according to the invention, the preparations can furthermore comprise less volatile or relatively non-volatile solvents, the solvents or cosolvents for the resin or also solvents for a possibly present additive or solvent for resin and can be an addition.
There may also be plasticizers for the resin, colorants, fillers for the resin that modify the resin component of the foamed structure, and curing agents for the resin when this is in a partially polymerized state, so that the polymerization of the resin after formation of the foamed structure can be terminated to solidify the structure in a desired configuration.
It is usually preferred that liquid components of the propellant preparation which are not propellants and act as solvents for the resin should not exceed twice the weight of the resin present and in most cases the weight of the resin present. Usually the amount of such a solvent should not be greater than the amount by weight of the propellant present. The exact amount to be tolerated, however, depends on the resin concentration in the propellant preparation and on whether the liquid is a good or a bad solvent for the resin.
Liquids with a higher boiling point than the blowing agent modify the foamed structure. If they are also solvents for the resin, they can also plasticize it during the period after the propellant has evaporated and before the remaining, less volatile solvent has completely evaporated. Such a softening transition stage can be expedient in the deformation of the foamed structure into a desired configuration and furthermore support the formation of a higher proportion of closed or non-torn cells.
Examples of solvents with a boiling point below 70C include dichlorofluoromethane, trichlorofluoromethane, 1,1,2 trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, 1,2-dibromo-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, 1,1, 2,2-tetrachloro-1,2-difluoroethane, methanol, ethanol, acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, benzene, toluene, xylene, chloroform, methyl chloroform, methylene chloride, 1,1, 1-trichloroethane and perchlorethylene.
Plasticizers can also be used. These are selected according to the type of resin and, being non-volatile, they permanently soften the foamed structure.
Plasticizers that can be used include butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate, tributyl citrate, acetyl tributyl citrate, tricresyl phosphate,
Dibutyl tartrate, dibutyl phthalate, di-2-ethylhexyl azelate, chlorinated biphenyl and methyl abietate.
Fillers for the resin can be used as an extender for the same and also modify the physical properties of the foamed structure. The filler usually has a small particle size, although fibrous material can also be used. Suitable fillers include chalk, talc, silica, diatomaceous earth, clay,
Asbestos, magnesium silicate, calcium silicate, magnesium stearate,
Kaopolit, powdered polyethylene and powdered polystyrene. The filler can be 0-300% of the resin weight.

The propellant preparations according to the invention can be homogeneous solutions in which all the components present are soluble and / or miscible with one another. In this case, every addition that is present is accompanied by the
Resin dissolved in the blowing agent and after formation of the structure
Volatilization of the propellant deposited in the cells of the structure. Any non-propellant liquid will also be deposited in the cells if it is insoluble in the resin.
Any additive dissolved in this liquid is used with the liquid from the cells of the structure when the foamed structure is used.
The propellant preparations according to the invention can also consist of two phases: in this case the phases are emulsified into one another, the propellant-resin solution serving as a continuous phase. The discontinuous phase can then, for. B. comprise a liquid solution of the additive. If the propellant is volatilized and the foamed resin structure is formed, then the originally emulsified droplets that make up the solution of the additive are deposited in the cells as in the case of a propellant preparation which is a homogeneous solution. These emulsions can consist of an aqueous phase dispersed in the propellant-resin solution or of an organic, liquid phase in the resin propellant
Solution dispersed phase.
In such emulsions it is important that the continuous phase be the blowing agent
Resin solution, otherwise the material will not form a coherent structure after the propellant has evaporated.
A solid additive can also be dispersed in the propellant-resin solution. When the structure is formed, it becomes in the
Cells and walls of the same deposited. The solid additive is preferably water-soluble and can be obtained by immersing the
Structure can be extracted in water.
To achieve a relatively stable emulsion, emulsifiers can be added to ensure uniformity while some of the material is peeled from the container and converted into a foamed structure. The emulsifiers used promote the formation of a
Emulsion in which the propellant-resin solution is the continuous phase. However, long-term stability of these emulsions is usually not necessary. To form a satisfactory structure, it is sufficient that the emulsion can be made uniform and sufficiently stable by hand shaking to maintain this uniformity when some of the material is expelled.
Usually organic emulsifiers are used, which can be cationic, anionic or non-ionic. Emulsifiers are also classified as hydrophobic or hydrophilic, with hydrophobic emulsifiers forming emulsions in which the hydrophobic organic solvent phase, such as the propellant-resin solution, is a continuous phase and any aqueous system present is the discontinuous phase; while hydrophilic emulsifiers form a continuous phase of the aqueous component, the organic component being discontinuous. Mixtures of hydrophobic and hydrophilic emulsifiers are usually used, since more stable emulsions are obtained with these mixtures than with a single emulsifier. The preferred ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic emulsifier depends on the type of liquid to be emulsified.
If the liquid is predominantly water, a more hydrophobic ratio is preferred than if the liquid were a polar organic liquid such as ethanol, glycerine or propylene glycol.
Organic liquids which are not polar enough to be soluble in water and which separate from the paste resin solution usually form relatively stable emulsions without the need to incorporate emulsifiers.
Examples of hydrophobic emulsifiers are oleyl alcohol and hexadecyl alcohol. Oleic acid, sorbitan monooleate and glycerol monostearate. Hydrophilic emulsifiers include the polyethoxylated derivatives of the hydrophobic emulsifiers, coconut and tall fatty acid soaps, sodium lauryl sulfate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide.
Usually, an organic liquid which is incompatible with the polymer is preferred for use as a solvent for an additive present, since it can be separated more easily from the polymer when the foamed structure is formed. Such organic solvents often form a separate liquid phase distinct from the propellant-resin solution, even if the solvent is miscible with the propellant under normal circumstances in the absence of the resin. If the liquid is still compatible with or dissolved in the resin, the resin can be plasticized too much if the amount of liquid is too high; thereby, the resulting foam structure is too soft and weak for practical use as an application pad.
The propellant-resin solution must usually occupy a much larger volume than the liquid non-propellant phase in order to ensure that the propellant-resin solution is the continuous phase of the emulsion.
If the emulsifier system favors such an emulsion, the relative volume occupied by the propellant-resin solution can be reduced.
If other additives are available that fulfill the same function, then that additive is preferably selected which is relatively insoluble in the resin and very soluble in the liquid which then occupies the cells of the foamed structure.
Any additive that is not attacked by the blowing agent or resin can be incorporated into the blowing agent preparations according to the invention and remains in the foamed resin structure after the blowing agent has evaporated. After the structure has been formed, the additive is always in the cells. If a liquid is also present in the cells and the additive is soluble in the liquid, then a solution of the same is present in the cells. If the additive is also compatible with or soluble in the resin, it is also located in the resin matrix; this is especially true if the additive is solid and no liquid is present. Any liquid that may be present also penetrates the resin if it is soluble in it; this is also the case with a solution of the additive if it is soluble in the resin.
An incompatibility of the additive with the resin can be ensured by using a liquid solvent for the additive which is itself incompatible with the polymer; this ensures that the additive is dissolved in the solvent and the resulting solution is in the cells of the structure.
In addition to these purely physical requirements, any type of additive can be used, depending on the intended use for the structure.
The inventive foamed structures are, for. B.
particularly suitable as an application pad for external or local use of cosmetics of all types, such as. B. for cleaning, conditioning, nourishing and protecting the skin with hormone preparations, sun protection preparations, skin whitening and bleaching creams, face make-up, eye make-up. Preparations for use before and after shaving, depilatories, hair care preparations, permanent waving preparations, hair straightening preparations, anti-dandruff preparations, bath additives, nail polish and nail varnish removers, antiperspirant and deodorant preparations, fragrances, perfumes, baby care products and hypoallergenic cosmetics.
They are also suitable as a pad for soaps and synthetic detergent preparations of all kinds for body cleaning and laundry, as well as for dishwashing and cleaning silver, for shampons, shaving soaps and creams, hair tinting agents and color removers, corrugating liquids, lacquers, hair washing and conditioning agents and drying shampons.
The structures are also suitable as furniture polish, shoe wax and furniture and shoe care products, floor cleaners, car cleaning and care products and as porcelain, tile and plastic cleaners. When using abrasives as additives, they serve as cleaning and scrubbing pads.
Cleaning preparations can be formulated with single or multiple detergents, such as soaps and anionic synthetic detergents or soaps and non-ionic synthetic detergents; or they can consist entirely of synthetic detergents including anionic, cationic and nonionic types.
Typical, satisfactory, anionic non-soaps are alkyl sulfates such as sodium lauryl sulfate; Alkyl aryl sulfonates such as sodium polypropylene benzene or toluene sulfonates and the sodium keryl benzene or toluene sulfonates; the sulfated ethoxylated phenols, such as the ammonium salt of sulfated ethoxylated nonylphenol, produced by the condensation of nonylphenol with 5 moles of ethylene oxide; the sodium fatty acid esters of taurine, such as sodium palmitine or oil methyl tauride, or mixtures thereof; the esters of higher fatty acids and hydroxyethane sulfates, such as oleic acid esters of hydroxyethane sodium sulfonate; Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate; Sodium stearoyl lactate; Sodium lauroyl lactate; Sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate; Sodium lauroyl isethionate and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate.
Also suitable are non-ionic non-soaps, such as the polyethylene glycol esters of higher fatty acids, e.g. B. Polyäthanoxyester of lauric, myristic, palmitic and stearic acid, Polyäthanoxyäther of lauryl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol and lanolin alcohol, the Polyäthanoxyether of alkylphenols, such as the condensation product of octyl and nonylphenol with 5-50 moles of ethylene oxide; the higher fatty acid esters of sorbitan-ethylene oxide condensates, such as the polyethaneoxyesters of sorbitan monostearate; Polyethanoxy polypropanoxy polyols. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide is a typical non-soap cationic.
The term soap used here refers to alkali metal, ammonium and amine soaps of the saturated and unsaturated higher fatty acids with about 8-26 carbon atoms, such as capric, caprylic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oil, linseed oil, Linoles, arachidic, behenic, margaric, tridechoic and cerotic acids and the mixtures of these acids that occur naturally in fats, oils, waxes and natural resins, such as the soaps of coconut oil fatty acids, tall fatty acids, beef tallow fatty acids, fish oil fatty acids, beeswax, palm oil fatty acids, sesame oil fatty acids Peanut oil fatty acids, olive oil fatty acids, palm kernel oil fatty acids, corn oil fatty acids, babassu oil fatty acids, natural resin acids, abietic acids and fats.
The additive can also be an abrasive, including relatively mild abrasives such as chalk or kaopolite, or rougher abrasives such as pumice stone or silica.
These can be used with soaps and / or synthetic detergents. Cleaning and scouring preparations can also contain water-soluble alkaline salts including sodium silicate, borax, sodium carbonate and trisodium phosphate. Water-soluble separating (collecting) agents such as sodium hexametaphosphate, pentasodium triphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate and the sodium salts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or nitrilotriacetic acid can be used alone or with cleaning and scouring preparations.
If soaps or synthetic detergents are incorporated into the propellant preparation for cleaning purposes, then other components such as release agents, abrasives, foam retardants and conditioning agents can also be present. These components can be present in the propellant preparation in the form of a dispersed powder or a dispersed liquid. The cleaning components can also be dissolved in a liquid which is emulsified in the propellant-resin solution. However, the type and amount of liquid used must be carefully selected. So are z. B. Soaps and synthetic detergents, which are effective water-soluble detergents, also hydrophilic emulsifiers and show a marked tendency to form emulsions in which water is the continuous phase.
In order to avoid this situation, which can lead to a failure in the formation of an application pad, the proportion of water present in the liquid phase containing the soap or the synthetic detergent should be very low; or the phase volume should be small compared to the volume of the blowing agent-resin solution. The use of cleaning components in the form of a powder dispersed in the resin propellant solution is often expedient. After the foam structure has been formed, the cleaning agents are made available by immersing the cushion in water.
It can also germicidal preparations, including the 2, 2'-dihydroxyhalogenated diphenylmethanes, such. B.
11, to be formulated.
The various preparations, including those containing cosmetic and toilet ingredients and cleaning agents, must be mixed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention, otherwise unsatisfactory results will be obtained. So are z. B. cosmetic lotions and creams mostly emulsions or dispersions in which an aqueous solution is the continuous phase. These preparations contain emulsifiers that favor this situation. If such preparations were combined with resin and propellant in sufficient concentration so that the cosmetic preparation would emerge from the application pad, then the propellant preparation presumably contains the propellant-resin solution as a dispersed phase and no application pad is formed.
Furthermore, many of the organic compounds used in cosmetic lotions, such as mineral oils and fatty esters, serve as emollients for some resins. If care is not taken in the combination of organic compounds and resins, a sticky, blistered mass may be obtained instead of a suitable application pad.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a codispensing valve is used.
These valves can simultaneously mix and release materials from two separate container compartments. So one department would contain the pillow-forming preparation and the other the cosmetic or other additive.
In this case, a little more freedom is possible with regard to the formulation of the additional preparation. However, if the latter contains an emulsifier system that is too hydrophilic, an application pad may not form. Furthermore, components of the additive should be avoided that could quickly dissolve the resin foam structure.
The propellant preparations according to the invention are at
Volatilization of the propellant converted into foamed resin structures. This is easily done with almost immediate volatilization of most propellants by storing the propellant preparation in a closed container with sufficient external pressure to maintain the propellant in the liquid phase and then quickly
Reducing the pressure to atmospheric pressure
Room temperature, whereupon the blowing agent quickly volatilizes and the foamed structure is formed.
The
Propellant preparation can also be stored in a closed container at a higher pressure than the autogenous pressure originating from the propellant in order to prevent the expulsion of the
Preparation from the container through a valve or opening into the atmosphere.
Because of the high volatility of the blowing agents used, the resin structure is non-tacky unless a plasticizer or other non-blowing agent solvent for the resin is present in sufficient amount to impart tackiness to the resin. If the structure is to adhere to a surface, tack may be desirable. If the solvent also evaporates, albeit more slowly than the propellant, this sticky state is temporary and only prevails until the solvent is removed. Excessive stickiness is undesirable in an application pad.
When the preparation is ejected into an enclosed space, such as a preferably closed mold, the foamed structure assumes the configuration of the mold, and a molded article is obtained. The deformation takes place at room temperature without the use of any external elements
Pressure, as sufficient pressure is obtained after the propellant has evaporated at atmospheric pressure and temperature to ensure that the structure corresponds to the configuration of the mold.
The ability of such a preparation to reproduce fine details of the shape is achieved by incorporating a relatively large proportion of a finely divided filler in the
Propellant preparation improved. The filler content should be quite high and between about 25-300% by weight, based on the synthetic resin present in the preparation. Suitable fillers with this effect include finely divided silica, magnesium silicate, calcium silicate, chalk,
Talc and starch.
When the propellant preparation is released into the atmosphere, the foamed structure has an irregular shape
Shape. In this embodiment of the present invention, it is expedient to simply inject the preparation from the container into the hand, which results in a wad of the desired size, which is regulated by the duration of the delivery. For this purpose, the propellant preparations according to the invention are expediently packaged in conventional aerosol containers, the valve of which is controlled with one hand and the foamed structure is picked up with the other.
The foamed structure forms almost on the spot and the pad is ready for use within seconds of starting the process. The structure retains its shape due to the type of resin used; it is initially also flexible due to the retention of a certain amount of blowing agent, even if no plasticizer is present, i.e. H. when the resin is a hard resin.
The preparations can be stretched or compressed to a certain extent when the foamed structure is formed; this is done according to the shape of the object to which it is applied to form a cover or coating. However, since the preparations are converted so quickly into a foamed structure, they are not really flowable and do not spread by themselves. In this respect they differ from conventional aerosol paints or varnishes, from which the solvent is only slowly removed and which are therefore flowable and can be spread into a film only tenths of a mm thick; they also differ from the spreadable preparations of U.S. Patent 3,419,506.
However, the preparations are flowable before they exit the container. The viscosity of the flowable preparation is in no way critical, provided that the preparation is sufficiently flowable to be expelled from the container under pressure. The viscosity can therefore range from a thin, rapidly flowing liquid to a fairly thick, hardly flowable, thixotropic or gel-like preparation.
If the preparation is homogeneous or if the dispersed phase remains uniformly distributed over the entire preparation, the viscosity at atmospheric temperature can be up to 1,000-000 cps. be. However, if the preparation is subject to settling or layering and if it has to be shaken before some of the contents are expelled, the viscosity at atmospheric temperature must not exceed about 50,000 cps. and should preferably be below 10,000 cps. lie.
If the propellant used in the preparations according to the invention has a sufficient vapor pressure at room temperature, it also serves as a propellant for expelling the material from the pressurized container in which it is enclosed. If the vapor pressure is insufficient, additional pressure can be created in the container using a suitable pressure-generating gas such as nitrogen, nitrogen oxide or carbon dioxide. Since commercial regulations limit the total pressure in conventional aerosol containers to a maximum of about 10.5 atmospheres, a propellant is preferably used whose vapor pressure in the propellant preparation does not exceed this value.
The ability of the propellant preparations to harden quickly to form a foamed structure is evaluated by the viscosity-settability index. The index evaluates the tendency of the material to withstand flow under an applied load while it develops hardening due to evaporation of the liquefied propellant. It also assesses the relative propensity of a material to foam up. met. The viscosity-hardenability index is determined according to the following procedure.
89 x 89 x 6 mm 2 square aluminum plates weighing 65 g were used. The propellant preparation was ejected onto the center of a plate. Thirty seconds later, the second plate was placed on top of the foamed material and a weight of 100 g was placed in the center of the upper plate, which is exactly parallel to the lower plate. The total weight pressure on the foamed material was 165 g. After exactly 2.5 minutes, the 100 g weight was removed and the thickness of the foamed material between the panels was measured with a micrometer. The foam was then left to stand at room temperature for 24 hours, during which the blowing agent continued to escape. Weighing was then carried out and the weight was taken as the amount of non-volatile materials present.
The test was repeated for at least 10 foam samples using smaller and larger amounts of material, ensuring that a foamed mass of 1.0 non-volatile materials was included. A drawing of the data was then made using as coordinates the film thickness of the foam under the applied load and the foam height after 24 hours. A smooth curve was drawn between the points from which the film thickness was determined, which corresponded to 1.0 g of foamed, non-volatile materials. This thickness, measured in mm, was defined as the viscosity-hardenability index.
Propellant preparations which produce foamed products with a viscosity-hardenability index between about 40 and 600 are suitable for forming the application pads according to the invention. Products with a viscosity-hardenability index below about 40 often do not have the necessary cohesion properties for an application pad. In contrast, products with an index above about 600 readily adopt a relatively rough non-porous surface skin that resists the penetration of flowable materials and actually expands significantly under the 165 g load used in the test rather than flattening.
Of course, a rough surface skin is an undesirable property for an application pad intended for material transfer due to fluid flow through the pad. Furthermore, the excessive tendency of a puff to puff up and become rounded interferes with the ease of use, since application pads or pods are most expediently used when they are flat.
The propellant preparations according to the invention can be packaged in the usual containers known as aerosol cans which are provided with a dispensing valve for foamed release. Since the preparations foam quickly at atmospheric pressure, there is of course the risk of the dispensing valve clogging if the foam is not discharged quickly enough. All aerosol valves contain a shut-off device which, when closed, separates the container contents from the atmosphere. Usually the material flows through the termination device and then through the valve tube. The valve tube is preferably omitted so that the flow of material is not hindered after passing through the closure device.
Otherwise, the tube should be short and large in diameter to allow rapid flow of the foamed material.
The propellant preparations are produced using customary methods. So the solid and normally liquid components are e.g. B. combined and stirred until the preparation is uniform. Then suitable proportions are filled into individual aerosol cans, which are sealed and pressurized in the usual way with the normally gaseous, liquefied propellant. The individual containers are shaken or otherwise moved until the polymer dissolves and the preparation is uniform. All components can also be combined in an autoclave and stirred until the polymer has dissolved and the preparation is uniform. The containers are filled and sealed before pressure is applied to the material. In each of these processes, heat can be used to increase the rate at which the polymer dissolves.
In another embodiment, the aerosol container can contain a piston or bellows which separates the interior of the container into two compartments or zones. The one zone containing the material to be indicated is in communication with the dispensing valve. The second zone is filled with a secondary propellant which creates a pressure in the container above the vapor pressure of the preparation in the first zone.
The secondary propellant can be a compressed gas such as nitrogen or a normally gaseous liquefied propellant. The latter is preferred as it gives a constant pressure to eject the material. Examples of such containers are described in U.S. Patents 2,815,152, 3,245,591 and 3,407,974.
In another embodiment, encapsulated liquid components can be mixed with the material in the container. The use of microcapsules is preferred, since the presence of larger capsules of liquid components creates a rough and grainy feel or bulk.
Pillow results. Soft gelatin capsules can be used, which dissolve when the pillow is immersed in warm water, thus releasing the liquid.
The following examples illustrate the present invention without limiting it.
Example 1 to 3
These examples show two-part preparations which can be mixed when they are ejected from an aerosol container and, after mixing, form a propellant preparation according to the invention which immediately forms a foamed resin structure.
In these examples, the propellant-resin solution is in the larger zone of the aerosol container, which is usually the container itself, while the liquid expelled at the same time as the propellant-resin solution is found in the
Cells of the foamed structure used for deposited additive is located in the smaller container zone.
1. Mineral oil with a SUS viscosity at 38oC of 38/40 was added to the smaller zone of an aerosol canister fitted with a co-dispensing valve.
Then n-butyl methacrylate polymer was added to the larger container zone and the valve tightened. A mixture of 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-1,2-dichloroethane and 1,1,1-ChloMifluoräthan was then added through the valve and the container was shaken until the polymer dissolved.
The proportions of the two blowing agents were such that the blowing agent-resin solution had the following composition:
Parts by weight of n-butyl methacrylate polymer (molecular weight about 300,000) 21 1,1, 2,2-tetrafluoro-1,2-dichloroethane 42 1,1, 1-chlorodifluoroethane 37
When the valve is opened, the propellant-resin solution and the mineral oil are mixed and ejected at the same time and immediately form a foamed structure in the form of a pillow when the preparation is injected into the hand. The mineral oil leaks out of the pillow, and the pillow is suitable for oiling a baby with the mineral oil.
2. Example 1 was repeated, but instead of the mineral oil, a 50% by weight solution of ethanol in water was added to the smaller container zone. The resulting pillow is suitable as an alcohol pad, e.g. B. as an antiseptic, as an alcohol liniment or for after shaving.
