Description

   A. 43,6 g kommerzielles Natriumhydrid (etwa 55%ig) werden in 800 ml Dimethylformamid (wasserfrei) suspendiert.

Anmerkung I

   Beispiel I

   Beispiel 8

   Verwendungsbeispiel I

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new bis-stilbene compounds.

Bis-stilbene compounds are already known from French patent 1,583,595 and Belgian patent 748 017, but these are generally compounds that contain at least one sulfonic acid group, carboxyl group or their salts, a methyl group or mercapto group attached to a benzene ring must contain bound. These latter conditions were considered to be an essential characteristic for the suitability of said bis-stilbene compounds as optical brightening agents. In the further development of these investigations, a few selected types of compounds have now been found which, due to their specific properties, are particularly qualified for certain areas of application in the field of optical brightening agents.

The new compounds according to the present invention generally correspond to the formula
EMI1.1
where R1 and R2 are identical or different and are alkyl having 5 to 18 carbon atoms, substituted alkyl having 2 to 20 carbon atoms, cyclohexyl, alkenyl having 3 to 4 carbon atoms or a phenyl group substituted by alkyl groups or halogen atoms, n is the numbers 0 or 1 , X1 and X2 are identical or different and are hydrogen, alkoxy with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen, alkenyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, Y1 and Y2 are identical or different and are hydrogen, halogen, alkenyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and where a is hydrogen,

Halogen, alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

Preferred groups of compounds in the context of formula 1 can be defined by the formulas 2 to 6 listed below: a) Compounds of the formula

  e) compounds of the formula
EMI2.1
 wherein
R6 alkyl with 5 to 12 carbon atoms, alkenyl with -3 to 4 carbon atoms, haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl or alkoxyalkyl with 2-6 carbon atoms, benzyl or benzyl substituted with chlorine or methyl, carboxyalkyl with 2 to 12 carbon atoms or their alkali, ammonium and amine salts, Carbalkoxyalkyl with 2-10 carbon atoms, carbophenoxyalkyl with 1-3 carbon atoms in the alkyl part and phenyl optionally substituted with methyl, carbonamidoalkyl with 2 to 4 carbon atoms, N-mono- and N, N-di- (hydroxyalkyl) -carbonamidoalkyl with 4 to 8 carbon atoms , N-mono- and N, N-di- (alkyl) -carbon-amidoalkyl with 2-10 carbon atoms, which can optionally be substituted with dialkyl (1 to 3 carbon atoms) amino groups,

X4 denotes hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, methoxy, alkyl with 1-4 carbon atoms or alkenyl with 3-4 carbon atoms and the para positions are free of methoxy or. R6O groups are.

In these formulas 2 to 6 it should be noted in general that - unless otherwise noted - chlorine is preferred for halogen, alkyl is to be understood as meaning both straight-chain and branched alkyl, preferably with an unbranched carbon atom in the l-position to the ether bridge and in the case of substituted alkyl groups, the number of carbon atoms of the alkyl portion is usually 1 to 18, preferably 1 to 4. Among the alkenyl groups - as for e.g. R2 provided - the allyl group is preferred and lower alkyl groups are always to be understood as meaning those with 1 to 4 carbon atoms unless otherwise stated. The alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium and amine salts are primarily suitable as salts of carboxyl and sulfo groups.

With regard to the term carbonamido group and its substitution products, it should be noted that this should include both the -CO-NlI2 group and its mono- and disubstitution products, including, of course, cyclic amide derivatives (morpholino-piperidino etc.) are. Although alkyl amide derivatives (including substituted alkyl amide derivatives such as hydroxyalkyl, cyanoalkyl, carboxyalkyl, carbalkoxyalkyl, haloalkyl amide derivatives) are of predominant interest and carbon atom numbers of up to 18 are normally considered, other types of amide derivatives should be considered not be excluded.

The process for the preparation of the bis-stilbene compounds of the formula 1 and the subordinate formulas is characterized in that about 1 molar equivalent of a compound of the formula

EMI2.3
and about one molar equivalent of a compound of the formula

In the above formulas, the symbols RX, R2, X1, X2, Y1, Y2 and n have the meaning given above.

According to the reaction principle explained above, dialdehydes of the formula can be used, for example

In these formulas, R has the meaning given, radicals R bonded to oxygen preferably being lower alkyl groups, whereas R radicals bonded directly to phosphorus are preferably aryl radicals such as benzene radicals. The phosphorus compound of the formula 12 can also be prepared by reacting halomethyl compounds, preferably chloromethyl or bromomethyl compounds of the formulas 20, 21 or 22 with chlorodiphenylphosphine and subsequent reaction with an alcohol of the formula R-OH (meaning of R as defined above), e.g. be obtained with methanol or with water.

For the preparation of compounds according to formula 1, that of the above-mentioned process variants is particularly suitable, according to which about 1 molar equivalent of a compound of the formula
EMI3.6
with about one molar equivalent each of a compound of the formulas 17 and 18, where Z1 is a grouping of the formulas 10, 11, 12 and 13.

A variant of particular practical importance is that the diphenyl components used in accordance with formula 19 are those of the formula
EMI3.7
in which R 'represents an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms
The production process is advantageously carried out using inert solvents. Examples include hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene or alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, glycols, glycol ethers such as 2-methoxyethanol, hexanols, cyclohexanol and cyclooctanol, and ethers such as diisopropyl ether, tetrahydrofuran and dioxane as well as dimethyl sulfoxide and formamide Called methylpyrrolidone. Polar organic solvents such as dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide are particularly suitable. Some of the reactions can also be carried out in aqueous solution.

The temperature at which the reaction is carried out can vary within wide limits. It is determined a) by the resistance of the solvent used to the reactants, in particular to the strongly basic alkali compounds, p) by the reactivity of the condensation partners and y) by the effectiveness of the solvent-base combination as a condensing agent.

In practice, temperatures between about 10 and 1000 ° C. come into consideration, especially when dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide are used as solvents. The preferred temperature range is 20 to 60 ° C. However, higher temperatures can under certain circumstances also be used if this is desired in order to save time, or if a less active but cheaper condensing agent is to be used: In principle, reaction temperatures are also used possible in the interval from 10 to 1800C.

The hydroxides, amides and alcoholates (preferably those of primary alcohols containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms) of the alkali metals are particularly suitable as strongly basic alkali compounds, with those of lithium, sodium and potassium being of predominant interest for economic reasons. However, in principle and in special cases, alkali sulfides and carbonates, aryl alkali compounds such as e.g. Phenyl-lithium, or strongly basic amines (including ammonium bases, e.g. trialkylammonium hydroxides) can be used with success.

In the process described above, the preparation of asymmetric derivatives (which are of minor importance) primarily results in mixtures of asymmetrically substituted bis-stilbene compounds according to formula 1 and the two corresponding symmetrically substituted bis-stilbenes as a result of competing reactions between the three reactants. The separation of these components, if desired, is carried out by fractional recrystallization, column chromatography and / or by utilizing the different behavior of certain groups (e.g. carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid groups) towards certain reagents (e.g.

  aqueous alkaline solutions).

The aldehydes, e.g. are circumscribed by formulas 17 and 18, although not all are known, the preparation of a large number is described in the literature [see e.g. Ann. 401, pp. 91 to 119 (1913); J. Pr. Ch. 77, pp. 364 to 366 (1908); Ber. 38, p. 1676 (1905); DRP 209 608; Ann. 357, pp. 313 to 383 (1907); J. Med. Chem. 12, pp. 420-424 (1969)]. Almost without exception, they are obtained by etherification of the corresponding hydroxybenzaldehydes. Previously unknown aldehydes are also accessible with analogous processes. In the example section, the production of some aldehydes is particularly discussed.

Of preferred practical importance in the context of the present invention is the reaction - according to formulas 17 to 19 - of aldehydes of the formulas
EMI4.1
where Rw denotes a lower alkyl group and R 'denotes an allyl, benzyl, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, propylenesulfonic acid or alkyl group with 8 to 18 carbon atoms, with 4,4'-di (alkoxyphosphonomethyl) - diphenyl, or the compounds according to formula 2 obtained therefrom, with carboxyl groups optionally being esterified or amidated accordingly.

The new compounds defined above show a more or less pronounced fluorescence in a dissolved or finely divided state. They can be used for the optical brightening of a wide variety of synthetic, semisynthetic or natural organic materials or substances which contain such organic materials.

Production of some benzaldehyde ethers (starting products)
The following instructions serve as examples for the preparation of new aldehydes used in the following.

   A. 43.6 g of commercial sodium hydride (about 55%) are suspended in 800 ml of dimethylformamide (anhydrous).

  152 g of o-vanillin are added dropwise at 20 ° to 250 ° C. with cooling within 30 minutes, diluted with 200 ml of dimethylformamide and stirred at 20 ° to 25 ° C. for 3 hours.

168 g of methyl bromoacetate are then allowed to flow in over half an hour with cooling and then stirred for 18 hours at 20 to 25 ° C. After the precipitate has been discharged onto ice / water, the precipitate has been sucked off and washed with water, the temperature is 30 to 4Q "C dried in vacuo. 188 g of the aldehyde of the formula are obtained

   B. 29 g of sodium methylate are suspended in 400 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide. A solution of 76 g of 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde at 20 to 25 "C is added dropwise within half an hour, 90 g of benzyl bromide are added, the mixture is kept for 20 hours at 20 to 250 C, 30 minutes at 50" C. and 30 minutes at 70 to 75 "C. Then 2500 ml of water are added, 50 ml of glacial acetic acid are added and the oil is extracted with chloroform. After the solvent has been distilled off, it is fractionated, with ball mm = 214 to 215" C 76, 5 g of 2-benzyloxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde pass over.

   C. 183 g of m-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 182 g of allyl bromide are refluxed in 500 ml of absolute alcohol in the presence of 210 g of potassium carbonate for 5 hours.

The filtrate is freed from alcohol on a rotary evaporator and fractionally distilled. The 3-m-allyloxybenzaldehyde goes over at bl4 = = 113 to 114 "C (176 g).

The allyl rearrangement led to two different allyl isomers (presumably in the 2- and 4-position), which were used in a mixture in the conversion to the claimed distyryl-biphenyl derivatives.

Similarly, the 2-crotyl ether gave a mixture of presumably 3- and 5-crotyl isomers, which were also further etherified and used without separation.

Produced analogously to other regulations from the literature
Aldehyde -2-methoxymethoxybenzaldehyde, which distills under 15 mm pressure at 139-140 "C, was prepared analogously to Example 7 of DRP 209 608.

-2-Hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzaldehyde, F. 21-23 OC, was according to Example 7, Brit. P. 794 885. In analogy to this example, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-5-p-tert -.-butylbenzaldehyde, which was purified by steam distillation and is liquid at room temperature, was also obtained.

   Example I.
13.9 g of sodium methylate are suspended in 120 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide. A solution of 18 g of p- (2-formylphenoxy) acetic acid and 20 g of 4,4'-bis (dimethoxyphosphonomethyl) diphenyl in 80 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide is then added dropwise at 20 to 40 "C for about 15 minutes.

The mixture is then stirred for 3 hours at 40 to 45 "C., then a further 200 ml of dimethylformamide are added and just enough water is added at 100" C. to produce a clear solution.

The precipitate formed after cooling is filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried. 24.3 g of the compound of the formula are obtained
EMI6.1
 with a melting point of> 3000C.

   Example 2
The compound 36 from Example 1 can be converted into the free acid as follows:
18.3 g are dissolved in a warm mixture of 300 ml of dimethylformamide and 100 ml of water and the solution is allowed to flow into 300 ml of 2N hydrochloric acid with stirring. The precipitated product is filtered off with suction, dried and recrystallized from dimethylformamide-toluene. 12.1 g of the compound of the formula are obtained
EMI6.2

Melting point: 263 to 267 "C (decomposition).

   Example 3
7 g of the free acid of the formula 37 are reacted in 75 ml of toluene and 12 ml of thionyl chloride with the addition of 0.1 ml of dimethylformamide for 5 hours at 70.degree.

It is diluted with 350 ml of toluene, filtered at the boiling point and the compound which crystallizes out of the filtrate is filtered off with suction. In this way, 6.9 g of the compound of the formula are obtained
EMI6.3

Melting point: 197 to 199 "C.

   Example 4
The acid chloride of the formula 38 can be converted into corresponding esters or amides by reaction with alcohols, phenols or primary / secondary amines or ammonia using known methods. If you put it e.g.

with twice the calculated amount of diethanolamine in dioxane for 4 hours under reflux, the product of the formula is obtained after recrystallization from dioxane-water
EMI6.4

The unsubstituted amide is obtained by introducing ammonia into a solution of the acid chloride in chlorobenzene at 110 ° C. and filtering off the precipitate with suction.
EMI6.5

The following production method is suitable for amides and esters of carboxyalkyl ethers of the bis-stilbenes described here:

  :
The corresponding acid chloride is dissolved in a small excess of a non-polar, anhydrous solvent such as tetrachloroethane, toluene, chlorobenzene or xylene, the solution is cooled to room temperature, and a two to three-fold excess of a primary or secondary amine, an alcohol which may be substituted by non-reactive groups, phenol, is used or aniline, stirred first for 1 to 2 hours at room temperature, then in the case of amines or alcohols with a boiling point below 1000C for a further 1 to 4 hours just below this boiling point and then for 1 to 2 hours at the reflux temperature of the solvent. After cooling to 0 to 5 ° C., the desired ester or amide derivative can usually be filtered off in an analytically pure manner.

   Example 5
14.5 g of sodium methylate (97%) are suspended in 60 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide. 47.0 g of m-octoxybenzaldehyde and 40 g of 4,4'-bis (dimethoxyphosphonomethyl) diphenyl are dissolved at 70 "C in 175 ml of dimethylformamide and this solution is added dropwise to the above at 20 to 40" C within about 15 minutes Sodium methylate suspension.

The mixture is then stirred for 2/2 hours at 40 to 45 ° C. 175 ml of water are added, the mixture is neutralized with glacial acetic acid, the system is raised to reflux, cooled to 0 to 5 ° C. and the product which has precipitated is filtered off with suction. After drying and recrystallization from nonane, 24 g of the compound of the formula are obtained
EMI6.6

Melting point: 182 to 183 "C.

   Example 6
27.8 g of sodium methylate (97%) are suspended in 80 ml of anhydrous dimethyl sulfoxide. 36 g of o- (carboxypropyloxy) benzaldehyde and 40 g of 4,4'-bis (dimethoxyphosphonomethyl) diphenyl are dissolved in 200 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide at 70 "C. and this solution is added dropwise while still warm at 20 to 40" C. within about 30 minutes to the above sodium methylate suspension. The mixture is then stirred at 45 ° C. for 3 hours.

The reaction mass is poured out in 1000 ml of 0.5N hydrochloric acid, heated briefly to boiling, gradually cooled to room temperature and the solid is filtered off with suction. The filter cake is dispersed in 1000 ml of water while still moist, mixed with 500 ml of acetone and heated to reflux for one hour.

After cooling to 20 to 22 ° C, it is suction filtered and washed with water.

In this way, 53.4 g of the product of the formula are obtained
EMI6.7
which melts after two recrystallizations from dimethylformamide at 240 to 242 "C.

In an analogous manner, but with half the amount of sodium methylate, distryryl-biphenyl derivatives of the present invention can be obtained whose starting aldehydes do not contain any salt-forming groups.

If potassium methylate is used instead of sodium methylate and the mixture is discharged in water instead of hydrochloric acid, the compound of formula 42 is obtained in the form of its potassium salt.

   Example 7
15.7 g of potassium tert-butoxide are suspended in 100 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide; 8.1 g of m-allyloxybenzaldehyde, 8.1 g of o-allyloxybenzaldehyde and 22.7 g of 4,4'-bis (diethoxy-phosphonomethyl) -diphenyl are dissolved in 100 ml of dimethylformamide at 750C and this solution is added dropwise while still warm at 20 up to 40 "C within about 20 minutes to the above potassium tert-butoxide suspension. Stirring is then continued for 4 hours at 40" C, poured into 750 ml of water and the gradually solidifying material is suction filtered.

For purification, the dried crude product is dissolved in excess chlorobenzene, treated with 1 g of fuller's earth, the filtrate is concentrated until a precipitate occurs, then cooled to 0 to 5 ° C., suction filtered and washed with petroleum ether. A mixture is obtained in this way of the three connections
EMI7.1
which has advantages over the individual symmetrical connections 43 and 45 in the shade of lightening and in the solubility in plastics such as polyethylene.

   Example 8
11.7 g of sodium methylate (97 percent) are suspended in 50 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide. 41.2 g of 2- (4-bromobutoxy) benzaldehyde and 37.2 g of 4,4'-bis (diethoxyphosphono methyl) diphenyl are dissolved at 70 ° C. in 150 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide and this solution is added dropwise for about 30 minutes 20 to 25 "C to the above suspension. The mixture is then stirred for 4 hours at 30 to 35 "C. The reaction mixture is then introduced into 750 ml of water, stirred in an ice bath until the precipitated product has solidified, suction filtered, washed with water and dried in a vacuum cabinet at 60" C. 32.4 g of a product which melts at 121 to 134 ° C. are thus obtained.

After a single recrystallization from heptane with decolorization with fuller's earth, 25.7 g of a mixture of the compound of the formula are obtained
EMI7.2
a compound believed to be of the formula
EMI7.3
and a compound of the presumed formula
EMI7.4

Since all three compounds have similar properties, the mixture can be used for the lightening of organic materials without separation.

The examples listed in Table 1 below can be prepared by one of the methods described above (see note in the last column).

Without intending to make a restriction, a number of possible applications of the claimed class of compounds are presented below, for example; Compounds with groups that can be polymerized or condensed in, such as allyl, carboxy or carbalkoxy, can be polymerized or added to the organic material to be lightened when appropriately added.

condensed in and thereby become more migratory.

   Application example I
Bleached yellow cotton fabric is washed in a liquor ratio of 1:30 for 30 minutes in a 60 ° C liquor which contains the following additives per liter: 0.032 g of the brightener of the formula 36, 37, 64, 65, 66 or 86 1 g of active chlorine (Javel -Lauge) 4 g of a washing powder with the following composition:
15.00% docecylbenzenesulfonate
10.00% sodium lauryl sulfonate
40.00% sodium tripolyphosphate
25.75% sodium sulfate anhydrous
7.00% sodium metasilicate
2.00% carboxymethyl cellulose
0.25% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

After rinsing and drying, the fabric has a strong lightening effect with good acid and chlorine fastness.

The washing powder of the composition given above can also contain the brightener directly incorporated.

A strong lightening effect is also achieved if the washing process is carried out for 30 minutes at 200C.

   Usage example 2
10,000 g of a cut-form polyamide prepared in a known manner from mexamethylenediamine adipate are mixed with 30 g of titanium dioxide (rutile modification) and 5 g of one of the compounds of the formulas 36, 37, 40, 49, 52, to 57, 61, 67, 72, 86 or 91 to 97 mixed in a roller container for 12 hours.

The chips treated in this way are melted in a kettle heated to 300 to 310 ° C. with oil or diphenyl vapor, after the atmospheric oxygen has been displaced by steam, and stirred for half an hour. The melt is then pressed out through a spinneret under a nitrogen pressure of 5 atmospheres and the cooled filament spun in this way is wound onto a spinning bobbin. The resulting threads show an excellent lightening effect with good lightfastness.

If, instead of a polyamide made from hexamethylenediamine adipate, a polyamide made from ± -caprolactam is used, similarly good results are obtained.

   Usage example 3
100 g of polypropylene fiber grade are intimately mixed with 0.8 g of the compound of the formula 49, 57, 61, 62, 63 or 92 to 95 and melted at 280 to 290 ° C. with stirring.

The melt is spun out and drawn through conventional spinnerets according to known melt spinning processes. Strongly lightened polypropylene fibers are obtained.

   Usage example 4
An intimate mixture of 100 parts of polyvinyl chloride, 3 parts of stabilizer (Advastat BD 100; Ba / Cd complex), 2 parts of titanium dioxide, 59 parts of dioctyl phthalate and 0.01 to 0.2 parts of one of the compounds of the formulas 43, 45, 49, 53, 56 to 58, 61 to 65, 67, 68, 72 or 91 to 97 is rolled out on a calender at 150 to 1550C into a film.

The opaque polyvinyl chloride film obtained in this way has a significantly higher whiteness content than a film which does not contain the optical brightener.

   Usage example 5
100 parts of polystyrene and 0.1 part of one of the compounds of the formulas 50, 62, 63, 67, 68, 91, 92 or 94 are melted in the absence of air for 20 minutes at 210 ° C. in a tube 1 cm in diameter. After cooling, an optically brightened polystyrene mass of good lightfastness is obtained.
