Abstract

Whiskers of aluminium oxide are coated with metal by deposition in gaseous phase from nickel tetracarbonyl at temperature higher than 600 deg.C. as in the Mond process. These are placed longitudinally between fine mesh wire grids to form a bundle and are electroplated with nickel until bridges are formed across the gaps. A single mass of fibres is formed which is placed in a mould together with nickel powder, and subjected to high pressure. The resulting strips are sintered and then are laminated together using heat to obtain the required thickness and section. Springs are then manufactured from this material using normal methods.
