Gegenstand der Erfindung ist die Herstellung neuer Phenolaldehyde und ihre Verwendung zum Schützen von oxydationsempfindlichen Substraten.
Bekannt ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Verbindungen der Formel Ia

Bevorzugt werden dabei die Verbindungen der Formel V eingesetzt, in der
R8 und R9 unabhängig voneinander Alkyl mit 1 bis 5 Kohlenstoffen oder zusammen unter Einschluss des Stickstoffatoms den Rest des Morpholins oder Piperidins bedeuten.
Besonders bevorzugt werden Verbindungen der Formel V eingesetzt, in denen
R8 und Rg Methyl oder Äthyl bedeuten.

Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren wird in einem z. B. Lösungsmittel durchgeführt.
Als Lösungsmittel kommen Alkohole wie Methanol, Äthanol, iso-Propanol, sec.-Butanol, tert. Butanol oder Amylalkohol, aliphatische Äther wie Dibutyl äther, Tetrahydrofuran oder Dioxan, Kohlenwasserstoffe wie Hexan, Heptan, Octan, Ligroin, Decalin, Cyclohexan, Benzol, Toluol oder Xylol oder aprotische polare Lösungsmittel wie Dimethylformamid, Dimethylacetamid oder Dimethylsulfoxyd in Frage.
Als Basen kommen im erfindungsgemässen Verfahren beispielsweise Alkalihydroxyde wie Natrium-hydroxyd oder Kaliumhydroxyd, Alkoholate wie Natriummethylat, Natrium äthylat, Magnesiumäthylat, Kalium-iso-propylat oder Kaliumtert.-butylat oder Hydride wie Lithiumhydrid, Natriumhydrid oder Kaliumhydrid in Frage.
Es hat sich gezeigt, dass sich das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren besonders günstig in einem einphasigen Reaktionsgemisch, beispielsweise in einem mit Wasser mischbaren Lösungsmittel wie Alkoholen, z. B. Methanol, Äthanol oder Isopropanol, Äthern wie Dioxan und Tetrahydrofuran oder aprotischen polaren Lösungsmitteln wie Dimethylformamid oder Dimethylsulfoxyd unter Verwendung einer wässrigen oder alkoholischen oder wässrig-alkoholischen Lösung der Base durchführen lässt, wobei als Base vorzugsweise ein Alkalihydroxyd oder Alkalialkoholat eingesetzt wird.
Überraschenderweise geht der Aldehyd der Formel VI dabei nicht durch Nebenreaktionen verloren, wie es aufgrund der Literatur zu erwarten gewesen wäre. Vielmehr werden unter diesen Reaktionsbedingungen die Verbindungen der Formel Ib in wesentlich besserer Reinheit und höherer Ausbeute als nach bekannten Verfahren erhalten.
Zur Herstellung von Verbindungen der Formel Ib, in der R7 Alkyl oder zusammen mit R6 Alkylen bedeutet, wird der Aldehyd der Formel VI, worin R," Alkyl oder mit R6" zusammen Alkylen bedeutet, vorteilhaft in einem 5-40 %igen Überschuss und die Base in ungefähr molarem Verhältnis zur Verbindung der Formel V verwendet.
Zur Herstellung von Verbindungen der Formel Ib, in der R7 die Gruppe

bedeutet, wird der Aldehyd der Formel VI, in der R7" Wasserstoff bedeutet, vorteilhaft in ungefähr halbmolarem Verhältnis zur Verbindung der Formel V und die Base in ungefähr molarem Verhältnis zur Verbindung der Formel V verwendet.
Die Temperaturen, bei denen das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren durchgeführt wird, sind nicht kritisch und liegen beispielsweise zwischen -10 und +1200 C. Bevorzugt arbeitet man bei erhöhter Temperatur, beispielsweise bei 40-80 C.
Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren wird vorzugsweise unter einer Stickstoff- oder Edelgasatmosphäre durchgeführt. Dabei kann man die Base im Lösungsmittel vorlegen und die Verbindungen der Formeln V und VI gemeinsam oder getrennt, gegebenenfalls in gelöster Form, zutropfen. In der besonders günstigen einphasigen Ausführungsform werden die beiden Verbindungen der Formeln V und VI vorteilhaft im Lösungsmittel vorgelegt, und die Base wird, vorzugsweise bei erhöhter Temperatur und gelöst in Wasser oder einem organischen Lösungsmittel, langsam zugetropft.
In einer vereinfachten Ausführungsform des erfinderischen Verfahrens wird der Dithiocarbaminsäureester als in situ Reaktionsgemisch, bestehend aus einem Phenol der Formel VII

gemeinsam mit Schwefelkohlenstoff und einem formaldehydliefernden Reagenz im Lösungsmittel vorgelegt, ein sekundäres Amin der Formel VIII

als solches oder in einem Lösungsmittel zugetropft und danach das Reaktionsgemisch erwärmt. Anschliessend wird eine Verbindung der Formel VI zugesetzt und die Lösung einer Base zugetropft. Nach dieser Ausführungsform erhält man die Verbindung der Formel Ib in nahezu quantitativer Ausbeute und hoher Reinheit. Ein Vorteil dieser Ausführungsform liegt darin, dass man von billigen Ausgangsprodukten ausgehend direkt und ohne Isolierung des Zwischenproduktes der Formel V zu den gewünschten Verbindungen der Formel Ib gelangt.
In dieser vereinfachten Ausführungsform des erfinderischen Verfahrens kann als formaldehydlieferndes Reagenz Formaldehyd als wässrige Lösung eingesetzt werden. Vorzugsweise wird jedoch Paraformaldehyd eingesetzt. Als Lösungsmittel wird eines der genannten wassermischbaren organischen Lösungsmittel verwendet, bevorzugt ein Alkohol wie Isopropanol. Als Base wird vorzugsweise ein Alkalihydroxyd wie Natriumhydroxyd oder Kaliumhydroxyd oder ein Alkoholat wie Natriummethylat, Natriumäthylat oder Natriumisopropylat eingesetzt. Besonders bevorzugt wird eine wässrige Alkalihydroxydlösung verwendet.
Die Substituenten Rz, R2,, R4', R5, R5 > R8 und Rg in den For- meln VII und VIII bedeuten dabei das unter Formel V gesagte. Die Ausgangsprodukte der Formeln II, III, IV, V, VI, VII und VIII sind bekannt oder nach allgemein bekannten Methoden leicht zugänglich.
Die Verbindungen der Formel I werden als Stabilisatoren, insbesondere Verarbeitungsstabilisatoren, für organische Substrate verwendet. Sie stellen auch wertvolle Zwischenprodukte zur Herstellung von Stabilisatoren für organische Substrate dar.
Beispielsweise können durch Umsetzung der Verbindungen der Formel I mit Alkalicyanid und Ammoniumcarbonat Stabilisatoren der Formel IX

Poly äthylen, das gegebenenfalls vernetzt sein kann, Polypropylen, Polyisobutylen, Polymethylbuten-1, Polymethylpenten- 1, Polybuten-1. Polyisopren. Polybutadien, Polystyrol, Polyisobutylen, Copolymere der den genannten Homopolymeren zugrundeliegenden Monomeren, wie Äthylen-Propylen-Copolymere, Propylen-Buten- 1 -Copolymere, Propylen-Isobutylen Copolymere, Styrol-Butadien-Copolymere, sowie Terpolymere von Äthylen und Propylen mit einem Dien. wie z. B.
Hexadien. Dicyclopentadien oder Äthylidennorbornen; Mischungen der oben genannten Homo-polymeren, wie beispielsweise Gemische von Polypropylen und Polyäthylen, Polypropylen und Poly-buten- 1, Polypropylen und Polyisobutylen.

12. Polyester, die sich von Dicarbonsäuren und Dialkoholen und/oder von Hydroxycarbonsäuren oder den entsprechenden Lactonen ableiten, wie Polyäthylenglykolterephthalat, Poly 1 .4-dimethylol-cyclohexanterephthalat.
13. Vernetzte Polymerisate, die sich von Aldehyden einerseits und Phenolen, Harnstoffen und Melaminen anderseits ableiten, wie Phenol-Formaldehyd-, Harnstoff-Formaldehydund Melamin-Formaldehydharze.
14. Alkylharze, wie Glycerin-Phthalsäure-Harze und deren Gemische mit Melamin-Formaldehydharzen.
15. Ungesättigte Polyesterharze, die sich von Copolyestern gesättigter und ungesättigter Dicarbonsäuren mit mehrwertigen Alkoholen sowie Vinylverbindungen als Vernetzungsmitteln ableiten, wie auch deren halogenhaltige, schwerbrennbare Modifikationen.
16. Natürliche Polymere, wie Cellulose, Gummi, Proteine sowie deren polymerhomolog chemisch abgewandelte Derivate, wie Celluloseacetate, -propionate und -butyrate bzw. die Celluloseäther, wie Methylcellulose.
17. Hochmolekulare monomere Stoffe, beispielsweise Mineralöle, tierische und pflanzliche Fette, Öle und Wachse, oder Öle, Wachse und Fette auf Basis synthetischer Ester.
Die Verbindungen der Formel I werden den Substraten in einer Konzentration von 0,005 bis 5 Gew. %, berechnet auf das zu stabilisierende Material, einverleibt.
Vorzugsweise werden 0,01 bis 1,0, besonders bevorzugt 0,02 bis 0,5 Gew. % der Verbindungen, berechnet auf das zu stabilisierende Material, in dieses eingearbeitet. Die Einarbeitung kann beispielsweise durch Einmischen mindestens einer der Verbindungen der Formeln I oder IX und gegebenenfalls weiterer Additive nach den in der Technik üblichen Methoden, vor oder während der Formgebung, oder auch durch Aufbringen der gelösten oder dispergierten Verbindungen auf das Polymere, gegebenenfalls unter nachträglichem Verdunsten des Lösungsmittels, erfolgen.
Im Falle von vernetztem Polyäthylen werden die Verbindungen vor der Vernetzung beigefügt.
Die Verbindungen der Formeln I oder IX können auch vor oder während der Polymerisation zugegeben werden, wobei durch einen möglichen Einbau in die Polymerkette stabilisierte Substrate erhalten werden können, in denen die Stabilisatoren nicht flüchtig oder extraktionsfähig sind.
Als Beispiele weiterer Additive, mit denen zusammen die Stabilisatoren eingesetzt werden können, sind zu nennen:

4-tert.-Butylbenzoesäure, Adipinsäure, Diphenylessigsäure.
10. Sonstige Zusätze, wie z.B.
Weichmacher, Gleitmittel, Emulgatoren, Füllstoffe, Russ, Asbest, Kaolin, Talk, Glasfasern, Pigmente, optische Aufheller, Flammschutzmittel, Antistatica.
Die Herstellung und Verwendung der erfindungsgemässen Verbindungen wird in den folgenden Beispielen näher beschrieben. Teile bedeuten darin Gewichtsteile. Die Temperaturen sind in Celsius-Graden angegeben.
Beispiel 1
46 g (0,64 Mol) Isobutyraldehyd und 184 g (0,5 Mol) N,N-Diäthyl-dithiocarbaminsäure-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4 hydroxybenzyl)-ester werden in 600 ml Isopropanol bei 60 C gelöst. Bei dieser Temperatur wird unter Rühren innert einer Stunde eine Lösung von 20 g (0,5 Mol) Natriumhydroxyd in 50 Wasser zugetropft. Anschliessend wird 2 Stunden unter Rückfluss erhitzt, auf 50 C abgekühlt, mit 600 ml 1%iger Essigsäure versetzt und auf 0 C abgekühlt, wobei das Produkt kristallisiert. Nach dem Absaugen erhält man 133 g (92% der Theorie) an 3-(3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2 methyl-propionaldehyd.
Aus 66 %igem Isopropanol umkristallisiert schmilzt das Produkt bei 78 C.
Ersetzt man in diesem Beispiel den Isobutyraldehyd durch eine äquimolekulare Menge 2-Äthyl-hexanal, so erhält man bei sonst gleicher Arbeitsweise ein flüssiges Produkt, das sich bei 134138 C/0,1 Torr destillieren lässt und laut Elementaranalyse und Spektren 2-(3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyben- zyl)-2-äthyl-hexanal darstellt.
Ersetzt man in diesem Beispiel den Isobutyraldehyd durch eine äquimolekulare Menge eines der Aldehyde der nach- stehenden Tabelle I, so erhält man bei sonst gleicher Arbeitsweise die 2-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-substituierten Aldehyde mit den angegebenen Schmelzpunkten:

Beispiel 2
206 g (1 Mol) 2,6-Di-tert.-butylphenol,30 g (1 Mol) Paraformaldehyd und 76,1 g (1 Mol) Schwefelkohlenstoff werden in 350 ml Isopropanol suspendiert. Unter Rühren werden nun 73,15 g (1 Mol) Diäthylamin, gelöst in 125 ml Isopropanol, innert einer Stunde zugetropft. Die Reaktion verläuft exotherm, das Reaktionsgemisch erwärmt sich von Raumtemperatur auf ca. 40 C. Anschliessend wird zum Rück fluss erhitzt und weitere 3 Stunden bei dieser Temperatur gerührt. Danach kühlt man auf 50 C ab, versetzt mit 92 g (ca.
1,3 Mol) Isobutyraldehyd und tropft innert einer Stunde eine Lösung von 40 g Natriumhydroxyd in 100 ml Wasser zu. Die weitere Aufarbeitung erfolgt entsprechend dem Beispiel 1.
Man erhält so den 3-(3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)- 2,2-di-methyl-propionaldehyd vom Schmelzpunkt 76-78 C in nahezu quantitativer Ausbeute.
Ersetzt man in diesem Beispiel das 2,6-Di-tert.-butylphenol durch eine äquimolekulare Menge eines der Phenole der nach- stehenden Tabelle II, so erhält man bei sonst gleicher Arbeitsweise die 3-(3,5-Dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2-dimethylpropionaldehyde mit den angegebenen Schmelzpunkten:

Beispiel 3
14 g (0,35 Mol) Natriumhydroxyd werden in 14 ml Wasser gelöst und zu einer Suspension von 1,5 g Tetrabutylammoniumjodid in 20 ml Benzol zufliessen gelassen.
Unter Rühren wird auf 70 C erhitzt und bei dieser Temperatur eine Lösung von 76,5 g (0,3 Mol) -butyl-4-hydroxy-benzyl- chlorid und 28,8 g (0,4 Mol) Isobutyraldehyd in 100 ml Ligroin innert 2 Stunden zugetropft. Es wird weitere 2 Stunden bei 70 C gerührt, anschliessend abgekühlt, mit 10 ml Eisessig versetzt und mit 100 ml Toluol verdünnt. Die organische Phase wird mit Wasser gründlich gewaschen und unter reduziertem Druck vollständig eingeengt. Man erhält so ein rotbraunes Ol, das nach dem Dünnschichtchromatogramm (Laufmittel Toluol) den 3-(3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy- phenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-propionaldehyd enthält.
Beispiel 4
23,2 g (0,08 Mol) 3-(3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)- 2,2-dimethyl-propionaldehyd, 3,92 g (0,08 Mol) Natriumcyanid und 23 g (0,24 Mol) Ammoniumcarbonat werden in 100 ml 90 %igem Äthanol suspendiert und bei 45 C 2 Stunden gerührt. Danach wird auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt, mit 200 ml Wasser versetzt und eine weitere Stunde gerührt. Man saugt danach den gebildeten Niederschlag ab, wäscht mit viel Wasser nach und kristallisiert aus Acetonnitril um. Das so er haltene 5-[1,1-Dimethyl-2-(3,5 -di-tert. -butyl-4-hydroxy- phenyl)-äthyl]-hydantoin sintert ab 150 C, wird wieder fest und schmilzt dann ab 220 C.
Beispiel 5
Stabilisierung gegen Abbau von Polypropylen bei der Verarbeitung
0,1 Teil 3-(3,5-Di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2-di- methyl-propionaldehyd wird mit 100 Teilen Polypropylenpulver ( Propathen HF 20 der Firma ICI) homogen vermischt und Smal in einem Einschneckenextruder bei max.
260 C und 100 U./Minute hintereinander umgranuliert. Je- weils nach der 1.,3. und 5. Extrusion wird der Schmelzindex (MI) des Materials gemessen (2160 g Belastung bei 230 C, Angabe in Gramm je 10 Minuten). Ein Abbau des Polymeren äussert sich in einem raschen Ansteigen des Schmelzindex.
Parallel dazu wird ein Versuch auf dieselbe Weise durchgeführt, wobei kein Stabilisator zugegeben wird.

Beispiel 6
36,7 g (0,1 Mol) N,N-Diäthyl-dithiocarbaminsäre-(3,5- di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-ester und 3,5 g (0,6 Mol) Propionaldehyd werden in 120 ml Isopropanol vorgelegt und auf 40 C erwärmt, Unter Rühren wird eine Lösung von Natriumhydroxyd in i0 ml Wasser innert einer Stunde zugetropft.
Es wird weitere 2 Stunden bei gleicher Temperatur gerührt.
Danach wird auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt und mit 30 ml 10 zeiger Essigsäure versetzt. Der gebildete Niederschlag wird abgesaugt, zuerst mit 70ioigem Isopropanol, dann 1 zeiger Essigsäure gründlich gewaschen. Umkristallisiert aus Acetonitril schmilzt der 2,2-Bis-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy- benzyl)-propionaldehyd bei 173 C.
Beispiel 7
46 g (0,64 Mol) Isobutyraldehyd und 161,5 g (0,5 Mol) N,N-Diäthyl-dithiocarbaminsäure-(3 -tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-5- methylbenzyl)-ester werden in 600 ml Isopropanol bei 60 C gelöst. Bei dieser Temperatur wird unter Rühren innert einer Stunde eine Lösung von 20 g (0,5 Mol) Natriumhydroxyd in 50 ml Wasser zugetropft. Anschliessend wird 2 Stunden unter Rückfluss erhitzt. Nach Abdestillieren von ca. 200 ml Isopropanol wird mit 2 ml Eisessig versetzt, anschliessend 400 ml Wasser zugegeben, wobei das Produkt kristallisiert. Nach Absaugen wird aus einem Gemisch aus Isopropanol/Wasser 5:2 umkristallisiert. Man erhält so den 3-(3-tert.-Butyl-4-hydroxy- 5-methylphenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-propionaldehyd vom Schmelzpunkt 93 C.
Ersetzt man in diesem Beispiel den N,N-Diäthyl-dithio- carbaminsäure-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylbenzyl ester durch N,N-Diäthyl-dithiocarbaminsäure-(2,3-dime 4-hydroxy-5-tert.-butyl-benzyl)-ester, so erhält man bei sonst gleicher Arbeitsweise den 3-(2,3-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-5-tert.butylphenyl)-2,2-dimethylpropionaldehyd vom Schmelzpunkt 102 C.
Claims (1)
- PATENTANSPRUCH IVerfahren zur Herstellung von neuen Phenolaldehyden der allgemeinen Formel Ib EMI7.1 @@@@@ R1 und $5 unabhängig voneinander Wasserstoff oder Methyl bedeuten und R2' und R4' unabhängig voneinander Alkyl, Cycloalkyl oder Aralkyl sind und R6 Alkyl und R, Alkyl oder die Gruppe EMI7.2 in der Rl, R2', R4' und Rs die angegebene Bedeutung haben, oder R7 zusammen mit R6 Alkylen bedeutet, dadurch gekennzeichnet,dass man einen Dithiocarbaminsäure- ester der allgemeinen Formel V EMI7.3 worin R,. R2', R4' und Rs die in Formel I definierte Bedeutung haben und R8 und R9 unabhängig voneinander Alkyl oder zusammen unter Einschluss des Stickstoffatoms einen gesättigten heterocyclischen 5- oder 6gliedrigen Ring bedeuten, mit einem Aldehyd der allgemeinen Formel VI EMI7.4 worin R6 und R, die in Formel Ib definierte Bedeutung haben.in Gegenwart einer Base in einem Lösungsmittel reagieren lässt.UNTERANSPRÜCHE 1. Verfahren gemäss Patentanspruch I, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass als Dithiocarbaminsäureester solche eingesetzt werden, in denen R8 und Rg unabhängig voneinander Alkyl mit 1-5 Kohlenstoffatomen oder zusammen unter Einschluss des Stickstoffatoms Morpholino oder Piperidino bedeuten.2. Verfahren gemäss Patentanspruch I, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man als Dithiocarbaminsäureester solche einsetzt, in denen R8 und R9 Methyl oder Äthyl bedeuten.3. Verfahren gemäss Patentanspruch I. dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man als Base Alkalihydroxyde, Alkoholate oder Hydride verwendet.4. Verfahren gemäss Patentanspruch I, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man als Lösungsmittel Methanol, Äthanol oder Isopropanol verwendet.PATENTANSPRUCH II Anwendung des Verfahrens gemäss Patentanspruch I, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man den Dithiocarbaminsäure- ester als in situ Reaktionsgemisch, bestehend aus einem Phe- nol der allgemeinen Formel VII EMI7.5 worin R" R2', R4' und R5 die in Patentanspruch I definierte Bedeutung haben, und Schwefelkohlenstoff, einem formaldehydliefernden Reagenz und einem sekundären Amin der allgemeinen Formel VIII EMI7.6 worin R8@ und Rg die in Patentanspruch I definierte Bedeu- tung haben, einsetzt.
