Abstract

A rotating dial (6) can be operated manually and carries a reference and a representation of a part of the globe. A stationary index (13) allows the angular position occupied by the dial to be determined. A magnetised needle (11) has a pivotal axis which coincides with the axis of rotation of the dial. When the latter has been brought into an angular position such that the point on the globe where the user of the instrument is situated is opposite the index (13), and when the magnetised needle (11) has been brought by rotation of the instrument itself around the axis of the said needle opposite the reference (8) of the dial, the index (13) then allows the direction in which it is situated to be determined, with respect to the point on the globe where the user is placed, the point on the globe corresponding to the centre of the dial or to the antipode of this point. <IMAGE>
