Abstract

An aluminium watch component die-cast in a mould is, before the formation of the natural Al2O3 oxide layer on its surface, formed to its final mass in a single straight-line movement in a press provided with punch drills and rams. In this way, those areas of the watch component which are exposed to a mechanical stress in the watch are mechanically consolidated. At the same time, their surface is brought to the intended surface quality. After this mechanical treatment, the watch component is exposed for several hours to deionised water or steam at 373 DEG -420 DEG K to form an AlOOH covering layer. By means of this process, watch components of high quality can be fabricated with minimum effort and extremely inexpensively.
