Abstract

An element for a timing instrument, in particular a watch component, which is exposed to high wear and consists of an alloy containing 20 to 65 % by weight of cobalt, up to 30 % by weight of nickel and chromium as well as one or more of the metals iron, molybdenum and tungsten, or 30 to 80 % by weight of nickel, up to 25 % by weight of chromium and iron as well as additives for hardening the alloy, has a tough, wear resistant outer layer which has a hardness of up to 3600 kp/mm<2> and has been produced by borination in the gas phase. This layer preferably contains cobalt boride and/or nickel boride or a boron layer produced thereon by further gas-phase borination.
