8. Method according to claim 7, characterized in that the strong base consists of a solution of butyl lithium in the presence of N, N, N ', N'-tetramethylethylenediamine.
The present invention relates to the field of perfumery. It relates in particular to a new cycloaliphatic alcohol of formula
EMI1.2
or 4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1 -yle) -2-pentanol, which compound can of course be in racemic form or in one of its optically active forms defined by the formulas below:
EMI1.3
4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-yl) -2-pentanol has a fresh, dewy fragrant note which is somewhat similar to that of citronellol. Its smell therefore falls into the category of floral notes.
Endowed with very good tenacity, it serves precisely to reinforce the floral base note of the compositions in which it is incorporated; its use is therefore very general.
The subject of the present invention is a perfuming composition containing, as an active perfuming ingredient, 4- (4-methyl-3 cyclohexene-1-yl) -2-pentanol.
It further relates to a perfume or a perfumed product containing said pentanol as an active perfuming ingredient. The invention is defined as indicated in the claims.
4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1 -yle) -2-pentanol can be used in perfumes, perfume bases and concentrates, as well as in reconstitutions of natural essences.
It can also be used for perfuming various articles, among which we can list cosmetic articles, such as beauty creams, toilet soaps. yeast reds or shampoos for example, and functional items, such as detergents. textile softeners or ambient air fresheners. Although it can be incorporated into said products in an isolated state, it is generally used in admixture with other fragrance ingredients. solvents, thinners or carriers.
The proportions in which the product of the invention is used to produce the desired perfuming effects vary within a fairly wide range of values. As is often the case in these cases, those skilled in the art know from experience that such concentrations can vary as a function of the specific effects sought as well as according to the nature of the co-ingredients present in a given composition and the nature of the product to be obtained. perfume.
Concentrations of the order of 5-10% by weight relative to the weight of the composition in which it is incorporated can be used in many cases. These values may be lower, for example of the order of 0.5-1 Ó when perfuming articles such as soaps or cosmetics.
As indicated above, 4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-yl) -2-pentanol is a new compound which can be obtained by a process which consists in adding the Grignard type of a halide 3- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-yl) methyl-magnesium-butanal. followed by hydrolysis of the adduct obtained.
3- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1 -yle) -butanal, used as a starting material in the above-mentioned process, is a commercial product which can be obtained by hydroformylation of limonene according to US Patent No. 2,584,539. Such a process can be applied to any of the isomeric forms of limonene and therefore provide an optically active butanal, which will lead to the formation of a final product (I) also active, or a racemic butanal, and one will obtain racemic 4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1 -yle) -2-pentanol.
Alternatively, the pentanol of the invention is obtained by a process which consists of:
a) the treatment of limonene with a strong base,
b) adding acetaldehyde to the resulting reaction mixture to provide 4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-yl) -4-pentene-2-ol, and
c) reduction of this alcohol by catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of Raney nickel.
Steps a and b of said process can be carried out according to the method described by R.J. Crawford et al. in J. Amer. Chem.
Soc. , 94, 4298 (1972), while the catalytic hydrogenation proceeds according to the usual techniques.
The invention will be illustrated by the following examples (temperatures in degrees centigrade).
EYel11p / e I: Preparation of 4 (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-yl) -2-pentanol
5 g of 3- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1-yl) -butanal dissolved in diethyl ether were added under an argon atmosphere and stirring to a mixture of methyl magnesium iodide prepared from 5.5 g methyl iodide and 1 g magnesium in shavings.
When the addition was complete, the mixture was brought to reflux and the
everything was then poured into an ice-cold solution of ammonium chloride. After washing with water until neutral, separation and drying over Na2SO4 of the organic phase, the latter was evaporated and the residue was distilled in a ball oven (temperature: 130-1 26.6 Pa).
There was thus obtained 4.7 g (yield: 85%) of the desired pentanol, the characteristics of which were as follows:

Example 2:
Preparation of 4- (4-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1 -yle) -2-pentanol
a) 116 g (1 M) of N, N, N ', N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) were added dropwise over 45 min to a solution of 457 g (1 M) of 14% butyl lithium in hexane maintained at 21-28 by external cooling. The mixture was then kept stirring at room temperature for 1 h, then 272 g (2 M) of d-limonene was added thereto ([α] D20 = + 117.6; 1.13% CHC1,) and the color of the mixture thus changes from yellow-orange to red-brown.
After being allowed to stir at room temperature overnight, the reaction mixture was cooled to -50; using a CO2 and acetone bath. At this temperature, 66 g (1.5 M) of freshly distilled acetic aldehyde was added dropwise, then, after the addition was completed, the temperature was allowed to rise to ambient value and all been poured over ice. It was then extracted with two fractions of diethyl ether, the combined organic extracts were washed with a 10% HCl solution (3 x), a saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO2 (2 x) and finally a saturated aqueous solution of NaCl until neutral.
