Abstract

The horizontal sundial is constituted by the drinking straw (3) casting its shadow on the graduated falt crown (1) when the hat is removed and correctrly oriented with the aid of a magnetic compass (2) fitted to the centre of its crown. The straw (3) is pushed through two eyelets (4,5) in a vertical plane contg. the major axis of the crown. The angle between the straw (3) and the crown (1= corresponds to the geographical latitude (betA) of the site. The hours are marked by Roman numerals (e.g. III, IV, V, VI, VII) at the rim of the crown (1),. The straw (3) may be stowed within a loop (7) on the hatband when not required for orienting or drinking. Enother eyelet (6) neables the hat to be hung. The brim (8) may carry decoration or an appropriate motto.
