Abstract
Pressurized fluid which can create a change in the surface appearance if a particular substrate is directed through a narrow elongate slot towards that substrate whilst providing relative movement therebetween and arranging for the slot to be blocked selectively at locations along its length to control the resulting pattern. For example, heated air is fed into a manifold 30 under pressure through pipes 52 and emerges in jets through an elongated slot defined by facing walls 70, 72, a slotted shim plate 99 is clamped in the slot so that the latter is divided up into a plurality of spaced channels. The jets of hot air impinge upon a fabric containing thermoplastic fibres travelling close to the slot creating visual effects which depend upon the nature of the fabric. Each jet can be interrupted by directing an intersecting cold air jet through the wall 72 via a valve 82, pipe 80 and cooler 95. The valves 82 can be actuated by a pattern control mechanism. The fluid may also be a solvent for the substrate. <IMAGE>
