Abstract

The device comprises a threshold voltage detector (2) controlled by the generator of the periodic signal (Uos) to be stabilised. The threshold voltage detector controls the discharge current (io) or the charge current (n io) of a filtering capacitor (C), via current sources (I1,I2) and a current mirror (T1,T2). Control is such that the instantaneous value of the output signal (Uos) is less or greater than the threshold voltage (S). The average voltage (VG3) on the terminals of the capacitor is used via the current source to control the amplitude of the output signal of the generator (Uos). ADVANTAGE - Control makes use of good reproducibility of current ratios in CMOS circuit for accurate control.

Description

The present invention relates to a method and a device for controlling the amplitude of a periodic signal. This can be produced by a quartz oscillator, an LC oscillator or by any other periodic signal generator whose amplitude is a function of the current which supplies it.

In addition, the device must ensure the operation of the generator whatever the value of the elements external to the integrated circuit (such as quartz, inductor, capacitors, trimmer, etc.) and allow in the case of an oscillator, a starting current much higher than normal operating current, so that the oscillator starts quickly. The present invention will be described in more detail below, with the aid of the drawing in which:

Fig. 1a shows the principle of the device according to the invention,
Fig. 1b shows an explanatory diagram of the operation of the device,
Fig. 2 shows the device for controlling a quartz oscillator, and
Fig. 3 shows the servo device of an LC oscillator.

Fig. 1a shows the principle of the device according to the invention, in which a periodic signal generator 1 is recognized which delivers a periodic output voltage Uos (for example sinusoidal) whose amplitude must be stabilized. The servo device comprises a first current source II capable of delivering a current n. io and a second current source I2 capable of delivering a current io. The constant factor n is chosen during the design of the circuit and the current sources I1 and I2 are actually MOS transistors whose gains are in a ratio n. The device comprises a threshold voltage detector 2 controlled by the output of the periodic signal generator 1.

The threshold voltage detector 2 authorizes the passage of current n. io as soon as the instantaneous value of the voltage Uos of the generator 1 is greater than a given threshold S (see fig. 1b). This voltage detector can be formed by one or more MOS transistors or by any other suitable electronic element (bipolar transistor, diode, etc.). The transistors T1 and T2 form a current mirror, the gains beta 1, beta 2 of the transistors being in a ratio 1 (or other). In a current mirror, it is known that the current imposed in T1 is found in T2. The transistor T3 is a current source whose value is a function of the gate voltage VG3, therefore of the voltage across the filtering capacitor C.

This capacitance C is discharged by a current io when the instantaneous value of the voltage Uos is less than the threshold S of the voltage detector 2 and it is charged to (n-1) io when the instantaneous value of Uos exceeds the threshold S.

The adjustment has the effect that the average voltage across the capacitor C is established so that the instantaneous value of the voltage Uos exceeds the threshold S for a time T / n at each period T of the periodic signal of the oscillator Uos ( see fig. 1b). The choice of n determines the duty cycle between T / n and T. Knowing the value of the threshold S, the amplitude of the periodic signal is imposed.

By way of example, let us now examine the adjustment mechanism of the device described above. Let us assume that the voltage Uos of generator 1 increases. This has the effect of increasing the duration T / n during which the threshold voltage S is exceeded and consequently, the duration of current flow n. io in the current mirror T1, T2. It follows that the charge of the capacitor C by the current n. io increases as well as the voltage across this capacitance, so that the voltage VG3 between capacitor C and the negative pole of the power supply decreases. The transistor T3 therefore tends to become less conductive and the current delivered by this transistor in the generator 1 decreases, which causes a corresponding decrease in the output voltage Uos. There is therefore a good enslavement of the amplitude of the output voltage Uos which is maintained at a constant value.

In the case of a sinusoidal Uos signal, the value of n must be greater than 2. In practice, n is chosen between 3 and 10.

Fig. 2 shows the control of the amplitude of the signal of a quartz oscillator 3. This oscillator, of known type, comprises inter alia the following elements: a transistor T10, a quartz Q, a resistor R and two capacitors C1 and C2 . The output voltage of the oscillator, Uos, is located across the capacitor C2. The transistors T1, T2 and T3 have the same function as in the principle circuit of FIG. 1a. The transistors T4, T5, and T6 form a current mirror in which the factor n is given by the ratio of the gains of T4 and T5, ie n = beta 4 / beta 5 (provided that T1 is identical to T2. transistors T5 and T6 can be identical. The threshold voltage detector is produced by transistors T7 and T8. In this case, the threshold is S = 2 VTp, that is to say twice the threshold voltage of each p type MOS transistor.

I3 is any current source delivering the current io. The operation of the circuit of fig. 2 is the same as that of the principle circuit according to fig. 1a. In fig. 2, the current source I1 (n. Io) is produced by the transistor T4 of the current mirror T4, T5 and T6 and the current source I2 by the transistor T5 which delivers the current from the current mirror T1, T2 source I3.

Fig. 3 shows the device for controlling the amplitude of the signal of an LC type oscillator, 4. This oscillator 4, of known type, comprises two MOS transistors T11 and T12, an inductance L and a capacitor C3. The transistors T1 to T6 have the same function as in the device according to fig. 2. The transistor T7 forms the threshold voltage detector. This threshold is equal to S = VTp (threshold voltage of a p-type MOS transistor). The transistor T9 is connected so as to form a current source io. When the amplitude of the output signal from oscillator 4 is reached, the voltage VG3 remains constant and the current io of T9 is also constant, that is to say that it is independent of the supply voltage + Vcc and temperature.

In the particular case of the circuit of fig. 3, it is absolutely essential that the filtering capacitor C is connected to the + Vcc terminal, in order to ensure the automatic start of the oscillator when switching on. The capacitor C is discharged on switching on. The operation is the same as that of the circuit according to fig. 1a.

The advantages of the servo device according to the present invention are as follows:

  - The amplitude of the signal from the periodic signal generator is controlled by a given threshold voltage and is therefore stabilized.

  - The operation of the device is ensured regardless of the characteristic of elements external to said device, such as quartz, inductor, trimmer capacitors, etc.

  - For a given threshold voltage, the amplitude of the signal only depends on current ratios in MOS transistors (n ratio and ratio of the current mirror T1, T2).

One of the characteristics of CMOS technologies is the good reproducibility of current ratios.
