Abstract
The invention relates to the arrangement of a separation membrane for the electrolysis of water, alkaline or not, with anodes and cathodes for the production of dihydrogen and dioxygen. The membrane is opposed to taking an accordion shape by the electrodes (PA) placed in grooves provided on the faces of two half-shells (2'). This arrangement has the priority characteristic of considerably increasing the surface of the membrane and that of the anodes and cathodes for better electrolytic efficiency and in a remarkably reduced volume. The invention also allows greater reliability of operation of this arrangement, by the virtual absence of seals. The “vertical” configuration of the arrangement is also favorable to the use of very high operating pressures and higher than those commonly used in the water electrolysis industry.
Description
The present invention relates to the internal arrangement of an electrolytic cell comprising a separation membrane for the electrolysis of water, alkaline or not, and anodes and cathodes for the production of dihydrogen and dioxygen. This new "arrangement" offers the advantage of increasing the surface of the membrane and that of the anode and the cathode in a reduced volume and of guaranteeing greater efficiency.
ETAT DE LA TECHNIQUESTATE OF THE ART
[0002] The separation membranes for the electrolysis of water, whether alkaline or not, overwhelmingly use films of various thicknesses, such as Zirfon® from Agfa Gevaert and Nafion® from Dupont, for the main producers . These membranes are sandwiched between electrolytic plates, gaskets and insulators. This configuration, very classic, imposed by the general design of current electrolytic cells, requires simple geometries, such as discs, squares and rectangles, depending on the shape of the cells making up the stacks, "stacks", of the majority of these electrolysers. .
DEFAUTS ET INCONVENIENTSDEFECTS AND DISADVANTAGES
[0003] The shapes of these membranes and electrodes (anodes-cathodes), which we can consider as "simple", are the consequence of an embodiment of these cells which does not favor the best geometry of the membrane and of the electrodes. (anode, cathode) for optimizing the water electrolysis process. This „sandwich“ arrangement qualified as „classic“ generates an insufficient laminar flow effect between the membrane and the electrodes, considerably reducing the efficiency of the electrolysis. On the other hand, the impossibility of mixing the nature of the electrodes (rare metals) by the "one-piece" design of the electrolytic plates constitutes a handicap for the optimization of the production yield of dihydrogen and dioxygen. Another defect of the current membrane/electrode assembly lies in the surface represented by the internal diameter of the cell which, by their stacking, limits the operating pressures.
AVANTAGES DE L'INVENTIONADVANTAGES OF THE INVENTION
Object of the invention, the new internal arrangement of a separation membrane for the electrolysis of water, alkaline or not, and anodes and cathodes for the production of dihydrogen and dioxygen, offers many advantages. The first and one of the most remarkable is to have a very large membrane and electrode surface (anodes, cathodes) in proportion to the internal volume of an electrolytic cell. The second, also important, is to favor a minimum spacing of the faces of the electrodes with the membrane (from 0.5 to 1 mm). The third advantage is characterized by the general layout of the arrangement which opts for a vertical position of the elements in opposition to that of the stacked cells, obligatorily horizontal. This verticality of the architecture of this new arrangement favors the use of a tubular shape of the envelope constituting the cell equipped with this membrane/electrode arrangement. This tubular shape allows the casing to withstand the highest operating pressures.
The membrane and the electrodes (anodes, cathodes) are placed vertically in a tubular enclosure receiving, in its center, two half-shells, made of polymer material, preferably PEE and provided with various recesses allowing the positioning of said membrane and electrodes. These two half-shells respectively receive the anode electrodes and the cathode electrodes in the recesses made on their inner face while the ends of the membrane are retained by the tension bars inserted in the housings made by construction in the adjoining faces of the two half-shells. -shells. Each electrode plate is provided, over the entire length of one of its edges, opposite that inserted in the recesses made on the internal face of the half-shells, with a rounded polymer lining capable of imparting pressure on the membrane for its tension during the assembly of the two half-shells. The assembly of the two half-shells is preferably carried out by welding but other means of assembly are possible such as by screws, clips, gluing or any other technique known and usable for this assembly. The electrode plates used are rigid and the nature of their composition does not enter into the subject of the invention. Each polymer lining of the electrodes (variable in number but always proportional to the diameter of the tubular enclosure) constrains the membrane by forcing it to adopt an "accordion" shape without damaging the membrane, the material of which is flexible but relatively fragile. The membrane thus constrained therefore delimits two "chambers", one for the anode and the other for the cathode, the distance between the surfaces of the anodes and cathodes and those of the membrane must be as small as possible and not exceed 0.3 to 0.5mm. The precision of the realization of the constituent elements of the arrangement characterizing the invention can make it possible to further reduce this distance. These linings, made of flexible polymer, are circular in shape and glued or overmolded on one of the edges of the electrode according to the preferred embodiment and as explained above. The two half-shells are provided with notches on their upper part in order to allow the gaseous and liquid effluents to escape during electrolysis. The ends of the tubular enclosure of the cell are closed by two plugs secured by welding. The top plug has the dihydrogen and dioxygen outlet orifices as well as the electrical current supply connections in direct contact with the electrodes. The bottom plug has the cell water supply holes. The tightness of the two chambers separated by the membrane is essential to promote the best possible electrolysis of the water. This seal is perfected by sealing the ends of the membrane/electrode assembly with a polyurethane or silicone glue to ensure the seal between the ends of the membrane/electrode assembly. This method is indicative, any other known sealing technique can be used without thereby reducing the scope of the invention. Thus assembled the cell and its internal arrangement is totally hermetic and cannot be dismantled. This, depending on the thickness of the enclosure, itself made of PEE polymer, can be subjected to a pressure corresponding to the use of the electrolytic cell. In a pressure range ranging from 10 to 30 bars, the polymer enclosure may be sufficient. As mentioned above, the new arrangement, object of the invention, is totally verticalized, the total surface of the membrane and of the electrodes depends more on the length of the tubular enclosure than on its diameter, which offers very many advantages. in terms of simplicity of realization and reduction or even elimination of seals and insulators, always a source of problems for an electrolytic cell. This verticality of the arrangement, membrane / electrodes, allows a considerable increase in the surfaces concerned (and depending on the number and size of the folds made by the membrane), at equal volumes, compared to those of an electrolytic cell of stacks currently products. Other equally advantageous characteristics of the invention will become apparent from the detailed description, the claims and the appended drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the complete assembly of the arrangement according to the invention. Figure 2 shows the underside, in perspective, of one of the plugs and its grooves. Figure 3 is another perspective view of one of the plugs and showing its upper face and its cavities. FIG. 4 shows in perspective the membrane, the respective electrodes, the strips and the two assembled half-shells. FIG. 5 shows in perspective and in partial section, the internal arrangement of the membrane, its retaining strips, the electrodes and their fittings as well as one of the two half-shells. Figure 6 shows the membrane in its shape after joining the two half-shells. Figure 7 shows the two half-shells assembled. FIG. 8 shows one of the electrolytic plates fitted with its polymer lining. Figure 9 shows the „Zig-Zag“ shape of the membrane after strain. Figure 10a shows in detail the arrangement of the electrodes (anodes and cathodes) with the membrane. DESCRIPTIONDESCRIPTION
• Une enceinte externe (8) assurant la cohésion du positionnement des éléments constitutifs de l'arrangement, objet de l'invention.[0006] The arrangement, advantageously characterizing the invention, consists of the following elements: • A membrane (1) of the Zirfon®, Nafion® type or any other brand of membrane, used for alkaline electrolysis or "PEM" of the water to promote the production of dihydrogen and dioxygen. • Two half-shells (2 and (2') supporting the electrolytic plates and favoring the "accordion" arrangement of the membrane (1). • Two membrane retaining strips (3) and (3'). electrolytic plates (PA) and (PC), of variable number depending on the dimensions of the arrangement • Two plugs (7) and (7') sealing the external enclosure (8) • An external enclosure (8) providing the cohesion of the positioning of the constituent elements of the arrangement, object of the invention.
According to an exemplary embodiment of the arrangement, object of the invention, a membrane (1) is positioned between the two half-shells (2) and (2 ') (Fig: 4, 5) and secured to them by the strips (3) and (3') inserted into the housings (4) and (4') formed respectively on the faces (F) and (F') of the half-shells (2) and (2' ) (Fig:4.5.7). The electrolytic plates (anodes, cathodes) (PA) (PC) provided with their fittings (G) (Fig: 8, 10a, 10b), are inserted, by their edge (B), in the grooves (5) and (5 ') formed in the internal walls (6) and (6') of the half-shells (2) and (2') (Fig: 4, 5, 7). This assembly made, two plugs (7) and (7 ') close off the ends (E) of the enclosure (8) (Fig: 1). The elements mentioned, membrane (1), strips (4) and (4'), electrolytic plates (PA), (PC) and their fittings (G), positioned by their edge (B), in the grooves (5) and (5'), formed on the internal faces (6) and (6') of the half-shells (2) and (2'), are assembled by joining the two half-shells (2) and (2') ( Fig:4.5). This "union" of the two half-shells (2) and (2') with all the aforementioned elements, forces the membrane (1), hitherto relaxed, to take an accordion (or zig-zag) shape under the thrust gaskets (G) electrolytic plates (PA, PC) (Figs: 4, 5, 6, 9, 10a, 10b). The shape taken by the membrane (1) (Fig: 9) delimits two distinct chambers (C) and (C') (Figs: 10a, 10b), defining the location of the anodic (PA) and cathodic (PC) electrolytic plates ( Fig: 4, 5, 10a, 10b) and allowing the realization of the electrolysis of water. The mode of assembly of the two half-shells (2) and (2') (Fig: 4.7) is preferably welding, but any other known means can be used without reducing or altering the scope of the invention. . The two plugs (7) and (7') complete the complete assembly by closing the ends (E) of the enclosure (8) (Fig: 1, 2, 3). Here too, the preferred mode of connection of the plugs (7) and (7') with the enclosure (8) is welding, but any other known means can be used without reducing or altering the scope of the invention. The closing of the enclosure (8) by the plugs (7) and (7') (Fig: 1) is combined with the installation of a bead of polyurethane or silicone glue guaranteeing perfect sealing of the ends (EM) of the membrane (1) (Fig: 6) and ends (EPE) (Fig: 8) of the electrolytic plates (PA) and (PC) in contact with the faces (F) and (F') of the caps (7) and ( 7'). The upper plug (7) has oblong holes (11) and (11') (Fig: 2), equal to the number of electrolytic plates (PA) and (PC) and, on its upper face (12), two cavities ( 13) and (13') making it possible, respectively, to separately collect the respective liquid and gaseous effluents from the two chambers (C) and (C') materialized by the membrane (1), generated by the electrolysis of water (Fig : 4, 10a, 10b). The lower plug (7 ') is identical to the upper plug (7) and has the same oblong holes also equal to the number of electrolytic plates (PA) and (PC) and the same two cavities, provided on its lower face, but allowing the supply of water (electrolyte) to the heart of the arrangement, object of the invention. The electrical connections (positive-negative) in respective contact with the anode (PA) and cathode (PC) plates can invariably be positioned on the upper cap (7) or the lower cap (7'). These connections are not present in the various figures, enriching this explanatory document, so as not to be the direct object of the invention.
FONCTIONNEMENTFUNCTIONING
The arrangement of the membrane and its electrodes, according to the invention, operates conventionally according to the known principles of alkaline electrolysis and, depending on the quality of the membrane used, in PEM mode. (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane). It is therefore not necessary to specify these principles to those skilled in the art who will read this explanation.
