Process for rectifying high voltage alternating currents by means of arcs that are used as electrical valves and influenced by compressed gases. For the rectification of low-voltage alternating currents, valve cells are known to be used, which either have no arcs or only generated in a vacuum, since an arc under normal air pressure is too large. Voltage itself consumed.
In the case of high-voltage alternating currents, on the other hand, this fact is of no consequence, so that nothing stands in the way of using arcs under normal air pressure if it is somehow possible to influence these arcs in such a way that they are formed from currents in only one direction.
It is now known that alternating currents flowing between two touching electrodes, one of which is designed as a plate and the other as a tip, are rectified to a certain extent in the sense that predominantly only currents from one ( positive or negative) half-wave. This valve effect is only completely perfect and is out of the question for larger currents and voltages.
On the other hand, it is also known to achieve a “valve effect” of an arc by mechanically breaking the arc by blowing a stream of air against the arc. However, this method is also uncertain in its effectiveness, since the arc has a tendency to form in both directions of flow and the air flow cannot necessarily be guided in such a way that, with the usual shape of the electrodes, it also ignites back Security prevents.
The subject of the present invention is a method for rectifying high-voltage alternating currents by means of arcs used as electrical valves and induced by compressed gases, preferably compressed air, after which the arcs influenced by compressed air are generated between two electrodes, one of which as a tip, the other as a plate, the compressed air being blown against the other electrode in the AYen direction of the electrode designed as a tip.
This suppresses the tendency of the arc to re-ignite in the most effective way, both through the design of the electrodes and through the effect of the compressed air blown in the most favorable direction, even if the electrode spacing is relatively large and the voltage is many kilovolts. It is, however, very advantageous to adapt the pressing pressure to the distance between the electrodes, since the pressure of the blown air increases with the electrode distance. must increase in order to achieve a good, reliable valve action.
However, the physical process involved is not a simple one and attempts have led to strange results. The direction of the flow is noticeably influenced by the level of the pressure of the compressed air, and with increasing pressure there are reversal points in the flow direction. However, the same stability cannot be observed in the different areas of the pressure, so that it is advisable to go up with the pressure until a change in the pressure has no noticeable effect on the rectification.
According to this process, the rectification of high-voltage alternating currents can be achieved in the same way as the rectification of low-voltage currents with the known Q, silver vapor rectifiers. The arrangement and circuit basically give the same picture in both cases.
It can also be advantageous to connect several sparks influenced in the manner described in series in order to obtain smaller electrode spacings and thus lower pressure of the compressed air. This is at extraordinarily high. Tensions can be particularly beneficial. The nozzle, which blows the compressed air against the arc, is expediently designed so that it consists of electrically non-conductive, but heat-resistant digem material and is arranged concentrically around the electrode tip, the tip protruding slightly above the nozzle. Instead of compressed air, other types of gas, such as nitrogen, carbonic acid, etc., can be used to achieve the valve effect of the arc.
As can be seen from the enclosed FIG. 1, the electrodes a and b face one another at a certain distance, which is bridged by a spark c. The insulating sheath d is supplied with compressed air at e and blown away in the direction of the rod-shaped electrode b.
The voltage of alternating polarity supplied by the high-voltage alternating current source g generates only rectified current pulses, for example according to FIG. 2, in the load resistor f via ammeter g due to the valve action described.
It should be noted by the way that in order to avoid air turbulence and the resulting disturbances in the rectifier vox gear, the outlet opening of the insulator d can be designed in the manner of a Laval nozzle and furthermore that the electrode a instead. plate-shaped, spherical. or is designed in the shape of a cylinder, with a relatively moderately small radial extent.
