Description

Steam turbine. The present invention relates to a steam turbine having at least two separate sections, one of which operates in reverse order, while the other operates in load order. Such a turbine is applicable, for example, in the navy where there is a turbine section for forward and another turbine section for reverse on a shaft (the propulsion.

In a turbine of this kind, when one section is running empty and another in order (load, the empty running section will have its moving element rotating in a relatively stagnant place. A considerable amount of work will be required to do this). rotate the movable element of the empty running section in this stagnant atmosphere, and as there is no appreciable steam pitch in this free turbine section, the work absorbed by friction of the rotating part and by The movement of air causes the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere to rise.

As the amount of work absorbed by friction of the rotating part and by displacement of air is considerable, the atmosphere in which the free section rotates can be brought to such a high temperature that the operation of the turbine either put in tamper, or by (the serious forces said to differences in expansion of the internal parts and of the casing, or,

by bringing the parts into a crowd (the turbine at a temperature where the cast iron abounds and consequently gives rise to (permanent deformations.

The object of this invention is to prevent, in this type of turbine, the turbine section running empty. brought to a temperature dangerous for the turbine. For this purpose, the steam turbine which is the object of this invention comprises a duct (the diversion arranged to bring (the relatively cold steam to the section (the turbine running at empty, in order to prevent that - either. brought to a dangerously high temperature.

Preferably, this diversion duct is mounted outside the turbine casing; but it could also be housed inside it.

The aforementioned bypass duct can be provided with a check valve allowing the vapor to pass in a direction only through the duct.

In many cases, the amount of heat generated by friction of the rotating parts and by displacement of air is greater when one section of the turbine is running empty than when the other section of the turbine is running in reverse. is true, for example, in marine turbines, where the forward turbine section produces more heat when running empty than, under the same conditions, the reverse turbine section when running idle. it is running empty. It is, therefore, advantageous in these cases to cause a greater quantity of cooling vapor to cool the forward section than the cooling of the reverse section requires in the conditions. from running to vice.

The quantity of steam required to cool the reverse-running turbine section can be determined or regulated by establishing the desired passage section of the bypass duct or by a manually or automatically controlled valve inserted therein. Here, or the bypass line may be seen from a check valve arranged to open automatically when a greater pressure exists on the side of the valve from which the steam is to be taken.

The attached schematic drawing represents, by way of example, several embodiments (the object of the invention.

Fig. 1 shows the diagram of a turbine (the marine having a forward section and a reverse section; Fig. 2 also shows the diagram of a marine turbine having a main section and a rare section in cruising Fig. 3 shows a schematic of a steam turbine having an exhaust resistance section and a high pressure section, directly coupled together.

Referring to fig. 1, the turbine shown in this figure has a high pressure forward section 4 and a high pressure reverse section 5, a low pressure forward section 6 and a low pressure reverse section 7, the high pressure turbine sections having their active parts in the same casing and the low pressure turbine sections having their active parts in the same casing separate from the first.

The exhaust side of the forward high pressure section 4 is connected by a pipe 8 to the inlet side of the forward section to. low pressure 6 and, similarly, the exhaust side of the high pressure reverse section 5 is connected by a pipe 9 to the intake side of the low pressure reverse section 7.

The high pressure forward section 4 is connected to the high pressure reverse section 5 by a bypass pipe 10 provided with a valve i1 and. which, when the turbine is running in forward -n and the reverse sections Ù. 7 are rotating. hot, allows steam to be brought from the high pressure forward section 4 to the high pressure reverse section 5, from there through the connection pipe 9 and the low pressure reverse section 7 to. input 12 of a condenser. The valve 11 can.

be either a manually operated valve that is opened when the sections run forward. of the turbine are. in operation, or a check valve arranged to allow steam to flow from the forward section. to reverse section 5, but not in the opposite direction.

So that the forward section 4 of the turbine can be cooled when the reverse section 5 is in operation and the vessel is in reverse, there is a 7.3 pipe connecting the reverse high pressure section 5 to a middle stage of the Ares- sian high forward section 4. Another pipe, 14, connects the exhaust side of the high pressure reverse section 5 to pipe 8 going to the intake side of the forward section at low pressure 6.

The pipes 13 and i4 are provided, respectively, with valves 15 and 16 which may be of the manually operated type, in which case they must be opened when the reverse sections of the turbine are in operation, or of the throttle type. check valve allowing steam to pass from reverse section 5 to sections (forward 4 and 6.) but not in the opposite direction.

In this arrangement, when the reverse gear sections of the turbine are in load operation and it is desired to cool the forward gear sections 4, 6 running empty, steam will be made to pass through the pipes 13, 14 respectively. in the high pressure and low pressure forward sections to prevent these sections from being brought to dangerously high temperature. Instead of those pipes 13, 14, a single pipe interconnecting the reverse and forward sections may suffice to supply all the steam necessary for cooling the forward sections 4 and 6.

In some cases, the quantity of steam cooling can be brought from the forward sections to the reverse sections, and vice versa, in dependence (the those of the working sections, by means of a free pipe valve, indicated at 17. When this connection is used, the points 18, 19 at which the ends of the pipe 17 connect respectively to the sections (the reverse and forward of the turbine are chosen (the way that normally the steam pressure existing at these points is such that a greater quantity of steam will be caused to pass from the reverse sections to the forward sections when the turbine is operating in reverse and the forward sections are running stuck. , that when the opposite conditions are given, assuming,

as is moreover generally the case, that the friction the rotating parts and the air displacement the forward sections are greater than those of the reverse sections of the turbine.

It will be noted that in fig. 1, the high pressure forward section 4 is separated from the high pressure reverse section 5 by a partition 20 with a vapor leak seal 21 around (the shaft 22 of the turbine. In this case, it is possible to dispense with the use of the bypass pipe 10 to pass cooling vapor from the forward section fi to the reverse sections 5, 7 when the latter are running empty, taking care However, due to the leakage of steam through the seal 21 of the high pressure forward section 4 is sufficient to cool the corresponding idle reverse section.

With this arrangement, the seal 21 being constructed in such a way that the vapor leakage through it is sufficient only to cool the smaller reverse sections of the idle turbine and not the sections (the high pressure forward , more powerful, additional steam necessary for cooling the latter running empty is brought through pipe 73.

The marine turbine shown in FIG. 2 has a main or full-speed running section 23 and a cruising section 24, the rotating parts (the (lights sections being mounted on the same shaft, but inside the envelopes <lislincle, 1r, _ais can also be accommodated at.

The interior of a common envelope divided by a dividing wall, as shown. for example. in the upper part (the la fi. 1.

In nnarche at full speed. main section 23 only will work, but when cruising or at slower speed, both sections 23 and 24 will be active, steam, under these conditions, entering the cruising section first. 24 and then passing through the main section 23 to the exhaust 25 via the valve connection pipe 26 leading from the exhaust of the cruising section 24 to the inlet of the main section 23.

The exhaust of the cruising section 24 is also connected to a copdensor (not shown) by a valve pipe 27, the valve of which will only be naturally open when the cruising turbine is idling. A diversion key fuyas 28 connects a stage of the main turbine section 23 to the inlet of the cruising section 24 and this pipe 28 comprises a retaining valve 29 arranged so as not to allow the wise passage of the steam key through the pipe 28 only when the pressure at the inlet of the cruising section 24 is lower than that prevailing in the main turbine section at the point where the pipe 28 branches.

When the turbine develops full speed and the cruising section turns vice versa, the latter will be connected to the condenser by opening valve 27 and will be disconnected from the inlet of the main turbine key section 23 by closing the condenser. valve in pipe 26, so that value will then pass from the main turbine section 23 through pipe 28 to the cruising section 24 for cooling there and from there to the condenser. However, when the cruising section 24 is working, the connection between it and the condenser will be intercepted by the closing of the valve 27, and its connection with the inlet of the main turbine section 23 will be established by the pipe 26.

Under these conditions, the two sections of the turbine will be active, the vapor being first admitted to the cruising section 24 and then passing through the main turbine section 23. The check valve 29 placed in the pipe 28 under these circumstances will prevent any steam from entering through pipe 28 into the main turbine section 23.

Fig. 3 schematically shows a turbine arrangement with a high pressure turbine section 30 coupled directly to an exhaust resistance turbine key section 31. From this exhaust resistance turbine key section the steam passes, as shown in FIG. This is commonly the case in an exhaust resistance turbine, in a conduit 34 for use in heating or other industrial uses, and circumstances may arise in which the exhaust resistance turbine key section. 'exhaust 31 does not supply steam to said pipe, all of the load falling on the high pressure turbine section.

In these circumstances, the moving vanes in the exhaust resistance turbine section would rotate in a stagnant atmosphere and this turbine section could be brought to an undesirably high temperature. To avoid this inconvenience, steam is supplied from an intermediate stage of the high pressure turbine key section 30 through a check valve pipe 32 33 to the exhaust resistance turbine section 31.

When the exhaust resistance turbine section is idling and (kills cooling vapor; es = supplied by these means, the connection between the exhaust key to the key exhaust resistance turbine section 31 and the cnn. # lniio 34 will be intercepted by means of the check valve 35 and the exhaust, key to the electromagnetic resistance turbine section 31.

will be connected either. to the atmosphere, either. preferably to a condenser, which will ordinarily be the condenser employed for the turbine section at. high pressure 30. The connection between the exhaust. (The exhaust resistance turbine and condenser key section is controlled by an automatically controlled valve 36.

The key automatic control of this valve is achieved by means of a piston 37 movable in a cylindrical chamber in which the space above the piston 37 is connected to the control piston chamber of a relay (not shown). ) controlling the admission of steam to the exhaust resistance turbine section and actuated by the effect of this relay against the spring 38 which tends to move the piston in the opposite direction . In this arrangement, when the exhaust resistance turbine section 31 provides no steam, or only a very small amount, to the pipe 34,

the relay valves close and therefore the pressure existing below the relay control valve will become zero. Under these conditions, the spring 38 will be able to lift the piston 37 so as to produce the opening of the valve 36 to connect the exhaust of the section of the exhaust resistance turbine section 31 to the condenser via the pipe means 39.

Although the accompanying drawing represents the invention for steam turbines the sections of which include paddle discs, it is understood that the invention can also be applied to turbines of the rotary drum type.
