Description

Process for preparing a nitrogen fertilizer from cyanamide. By passing a stream of air containing nitrous vapors and a suitably proportioned quantity of moisture, until the alkalinity is neutralized, over cyanamide powder, the nitrous vapors and water become fixed on the water. cyanamide, and a nitrogenous product is thus obtained representing approximately double the weight of the cyanamide used and of which the nitrogen is for the most part in key form. compounds soluble in water.

If the reaction is stopped when all the alkalinity of the cyanamide has been neutralized, and the humidity of the air stream has been suitably regulated, the product obtained remains powdery; it is not very hygroscopic and can be used as a nitrogen fertilizer. The quantity of humidity and nitrous vapors to be employed depends on the composition of the cyanamide employed; with excess water, the product is wet and clumps together; with a defect. of water, the reactions slow down. These proportions also depend on the alkalinity of the cyanamide; depending on whether this contains more or less free lime, the proportion of nitrous vapors will vary accordingly.

A preliminary analysis of the cyanamide, followed by one or two preliminary tests, suffices to determine the relative proportions of nitrous vapors and of humidity to be employed.

On these observations, a new process for obtaining a nitrogenous fertilizer, of which nitrogen is. largely soluble, a process whereby the powdered cyanamide is simultaneously acted upon, until saturation of the alkalinity, the nitrous vapors and water vapor diluted in air, in relative proportions such than the product. again remains powdery and dry.

Here is, by way of example, the content of the air used for an operation with dilute nitrous vapors: in humidity 1,% (by volume), nitrous vapors calculated in N O. 1.% (by volume). Starting from 1 part of cyananide, at 19% nitrogen, there was thus obtained 3 parts of a nitrogenous product, the nitrogen of which is in the form of compounds soluble in water. In another experiment, we operated with it. air containing about 10 lo (by volume) of nitrous vapors, with similar results.

These reactions can be carried out in the devices known for reactions between gaseous bodies and pulverulent bodies.
