En se référant à la fig. 2, le potentiel de l'écran, déterminant- la vitesse initiale des électrons est représenté par les abscisses et le courant du circuit d'électrode en plaque par les ordonnées, l'effet du phénomène de potentiel de résonnance étant d'amener la courbe caractéristique de fonctionnement à prendre;
Device ii electron discharge. The object of the present invention is an electron discharge device, which can be applied, for example, to the reception of signals transmitted by radiosignalization and in which a container contains an electrode supplying electrons, a plate electrode and bare intermediate electrode for mant screen,
this device having the feature that the container is filled with a gaseous medium exhibiting the phenomenon of resonance potential, such as, for example, argon gas.
This phenomenon of the resonance potential inherent in argon and some metals in the gaseous state is currently. well known and can be explained as follows: If a vessel with three electrodes, as indicated, is filled with argon gas, for example, at a given pressure, and electrons are allowed to pass through this gaseous medium; from a heated electrode for example, we find that the Action changes appreciably for different electron speeds.
At a given relatively low speed, an electron passes either completely through a gas particle

<tb> plus <SEP> large <SEP> of the <SEP> electrons <SEP> will cross <SEP> the <SEP> region of the screen to arrive at the cri pla c electrode, affecting the circuit current of it. this. At a certain point,
the speed acquired by the electrons after the first non-elastic shock becomes so high before they reach the screen that a second non-elastic shock will occur, after which the electrons having again a low speed will be received by the screen electrode. This cycle of effects is repeated indefinitely as the potential of the screen is raised until it is interrupted by the effect of a foreign <B> phenomenon </B>.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the subject of the invention applied to the reception of signals transmitted by radio signaling. Fig. 1 shows the assembly of a discharge vessel and the external circuits serving said purpose; fig. 2 gives a diagram characterizing the operation of the device, and FIG. 3 is a schematic section through the container and serves to explain the phenomenon of resonance potential.
The closed container 3 of the device shown in FIG. 1 is filled, for example, with argon gas and contains a plate-shaped electrode 4, forming an anode, a filament-shaped electrode 5 forming a cathode and an intermediate electrode forming a screen or grid 6. The screen 6 is kept positive by relative to the cathode 5 by means of a battery I, and the filament-shaped cathode 5 is kept incandescent by the current of a battery 8. Similarly, the screen 6 is. maintained positive with respect to the plate electrode 4 by means of a battery 9, the telephone receiver 10 being included in the circuit of this plate electrode 4.
Incoming pulses, such as those coming from an antenna 11, are superposed on the electromotive force of the battery 7, acting in the circuit between the filament-shaped cathode 5 and the screen 6, by means of an adjustable transformer 12.
The operation of the device shown is as follows: Suppose, with reference to FIG. 3, that the potential of the screen 6 is somewhat greater than the resonance potential, i.e. such that an electron emitted by the cathode 5 is accelerated to a suitable speed to have a non-elastic shock at a point 20 adjacent to the screen. Some of the electrons which have not undergone a noii-elastic shock traverser will be the screen and, will strike the plate electrode 4, determining the current of this one.
The electrons, however, which had undergone a non-elastic shock at a point such as 20, escape this shock with a relatively low speed or give off particles of the gas, secondary electrons which are of low speed, and are, for example, then absorbed by the screen 6. In this way, there will be a decrease in the number of electrons received by the plate electrode 4 compared to the free black of the electrons received before the resonance potential is reached and, consequently, a reduction in the current of said electrode.
As the potential of the screen is high, the acceleration of the electrons emitted by the electrode 5 will be greater and greater and these electrons will reach a speed corresponding to a non-elastic shock at point 21, farther from screen 6. The escaping electron, either of primary or secondary nature, will therefore receive a considerable speed before reaching screen 6 and can, therefore, pass through it to arrive at the electrode. plate 4 so that the current thereof will be gradually increased.
As the potential of the screen or grid is further increased, the initial non-elastic shock or impulse will manifest at a point \? 22 so that the departing electron again reaches the critical velocity corresponding to a rion-elastic shock at one point. point such as 23 adjacent to the screen. The leaving electron, which can be of a primary, secondary or even tertiary nature, is absorbed by the screen and this again results in a reduction in the current in the circuit of the plate electrode 4.
This periodic change in the circuit current of the plate electrode; when the screen potential increases. continues until foreign phenomena occur and prevent further action, as described, of the electrons.
Referring to fig. 2, the potential of the screen, determining - the initial speed of the electrons is represented by the abscissa and the current of the plate electrode circuit by the ordinate, the effect of the phenomenon of resonance potential being to bring the curve operating characteristic to be taken;
the form shown with pronounced care 15, 16 and Him minimum pronounced intermediate 17. The vertex 16 will correspond to the conditions described for the region of point 21 and the minimum 17 to the conditions described for the region of point 20.
Suppose that the batteries 7 and 9 are adjusted so as to determine -for the screen potential a value producing a speed of the electrons in the region of the screen such that this speed undergoes a maximum disturbance or itiiniinum by the phenomenon of the potential of resonance. If there is a maximum disturbance of said speed,
the number of gas particles, the velocity of which is appreciably reduced in the region of the screen, is maximum and these gas particles will be returned by the potential of the plate electrode and will never reach it, the current of the circuit of this electrode thus taking a minimum value. If, on the other hand, the screen potential is adjusted to establish a speed of the electrons on the screen such that the disturbance on the part of the gas particles is minimum, substantially all of the electrons will have a speed such that 'they reach the plate electrode without difficulty, giving rise to a maximum current at this electrode.
Taking the latter case, the adjustment of the conditions is such that the device is made to operate at point 15 in fig. 2. An incoming radiation pulse of the proper polarity to aid the potential of battery 7 brings the total screen potential to a corresponding value at point 18 and the associated pulse of opposite polarity neutralizes the voltage of battery 7. and brings the screen potential to a value of 19.
In this way, the current at the plate electrode always remains below the normal value corresponding to point 15, its average value during the reception of pulses being served siblernally that shown by line 30-31, located roughly the midpoint between line 18-19 and vertex 15, which allows distinct hearing to be produced at receiver 10 (Fig. 1) even with extremely weak incoming radiation signals.
While this operation has been given, for the top 15, the adjustment of the battery 7 small easily be established so that the operation takes place at the point of minimum 17 or has top <B> 16. </B> Of course, with an operation at point 17, the normal adjustment called current is at a minimum value and the current increases with an increase in potential on the screen or with a decrease in potential.
Ort will note that with an earacterial curve having vertices or very pronounced and almost symmetrical minimum points, as in fi.
2, the difference between the average current during the reception of not too small pulses and the normal chi current value is substantially half of the maximum current variation, while with a characteristic curve having, for example, bends pronounced not forming a maximum or minimum, the average current (if working in the elbow region) would be approximately half the difference between the increase in current and the decrease in current accompanying changes in potential.
A remarkable difference can be observed between the operation of the device described with reference to said drawing and that of a three-electrode discharge device of the ordinary type. In the latter device, the grid or intermediate electrode acts only indirectly in that the electrons emitted by the cathode move to. sufficient speed, due to the combined action of the cathode and the anode, to carry them to the anode, either directly or indirectly. and the gate only exerts a retarding influence, when it is at a sufficiently low potential, thus determining the number of electrons reaching the plate electrode.
In the device described, however, the intermediate screen or grid electrode acts directly in that it directly controls or governs the speed of electrons and thus determines the number of electrons which should be devoid of energy by. titi non-elastic shock.
In other words, in the ordinary device, the potential of the grid electrode was only the control factor and little or no power was taken, while in the device described with respect to the drawing , there is necessarily a flow of electrons and energy towards the screen electrode.
The device shown is assumed to be applied here to the reception of radio signaling pulses, but it will be understood that it can also be applied in the case where it is desired to modulate a current by one control current, as in amplifiers or other similar devices.
This device can also be used in a frequency doubler, it being understood that a cyclical change in the modulating potential, from point 19 to point 18 and back to point 18, causes two cyclic changes in the electric current. plate trode, and this phenomenon can be exploited in different applications.
