Apparatus for density separating small pieces (coal, ores and the like from any minerals or substances which are mixed together. The invention relates to an apparatus for density separating small pieces of coal, ores and the like, minerals or any substances which are mixed therein, by means of an ascending stream of water moving through a separation chamber receiving said materials at its upper part.
This apparatus comprises a balancing column which communicates with said chamber which the materials flow through during their fall, at a point situated below that where the water intended to produce the ascending current enters the chamber, the orifice inlet of this column communicating with an uncovered reservoir in which is maintained a hydraulic load corresponding to the level at which the ascending current leaves said chamber through an overflow.
In the accompanying drawing, FIG. 1 is an elevation, partially in section, of an exemplary embodiment of the apparatus; fig. 2 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, of its separation chamber. In the drawing, 1 designates the separation chamber, vertical and tubular, provided at its upper end with a supply chamber 2, into which the materials to be separated are fed, and with an overflow outlet opening. full, 3, fitted with an adjustable register d allowing to vary the level of discharge.
The chamber 1 is provided with an inlet port 5 in communication with a water inlet pipe 6 and, below it, with a reservoir S of a second water inlet 7 communicating with a tank 8 in which the water is maintained, either by means of a float valve or by means of an overflow (not shown) at the same level as the overflow register 4 of the opening outlet 3 of the separation chamber 1. The tank 8 is uncovered and the water therein, acting as a balancing column for the separation chamber 1, allows the separation of the materials passing through it. be carried out in an efficient manner.
A tap 9 on line 6 is used to regulate the water inlet intended to produce the ascending current which separates the materials to be treated and which carries the light particles from them to the outlet opening by overflow 3 , while the heavy particles which descend through the body of water maintained above the inlet opening 2 by the balancing water column of the reservoir 8, which is in communication with the separation 1 to 7, are evacuated to the lower part 10 of this chamber 1.
The outlet end 10 of the chamber 1 communicates with a collecting and collecting water chamber 12, which chamber is closed and from the bottom of which a suitable elevator 18 conveys the heavy particles to the outlet opening 14, this elevator moving in a tube where the water is hand held at the same level as in the separation chamber 1 and in the balancing tank 8.
The communication duct interposed between the balancing tank 8 and the inlet opening of the separation chamber 1 is provided with a valve 17, the opening of which is adjusted so as to give the desired value to the discharge which s 'operates over register 4.
The separation chamber 1 offers an internal capacity 15 integral with it, placed at a certain distance from the external wall and starting from the point of admission 2 of the material to be treated to terminate immediately above the orifice - 5 of the water inlet pipe 6; this internal capacity has a diameter which decreases downwards and it is provided at its lower end with perforations 16, this method of construction having the effect of directing the materials into the desired position so that they are exposed to the sun. action of the ascending column of water flowing at 5 under the most favorable conditions to ensure the desired separation.
The operation of the device is as follows: The valve 17 of the balancing tank 8 is left open until the water rises almost to the exhaust level determined by the register 4, whose position has been adjusted as needed.
The valve 9 of the water inlet pipe is then slightly opened until the liquid flows just through the overflow opening 3. The material to be treated is poured into 2 and the heavy particles descends through the ascending stream of water which flows in at 5 and leaves through orifice 10, while the light particles are carried upwards by the stream and escape over the overflow register 4.
An increase in the quantity of water will have the effect of reducing the quantity of heavy particles discharged and, by regulating the flow rate, it can be achieved that only the desired particles are discharged at the lower end of the apparatus, while that all the lighter particles will be dragged over 4.
In cases where the coal or ore contains particles of a density intermediate between that of the light material which exits at the top of the tube and that of the heavy particles which exit with water at the lower end, it could be provided in the upper part of the separation chamber 1 additional exhaust openings having a total section smaller than that of the main exhaust opening of light particles, and through which the intermediate materials would escape to be collected.
