Description

1 ; L a fig.

Explosion engine cylinder. The present invention relates to cylinders of explosion engines; it relates to an explosion engine cylinder of a particularly suitable construction for light air-cooled engines used on light motor vehicles, without however the invention oi -itée these engines.

s * t liw According to the invention, a cylinder head for a titi explosion engine comprises a cylindrical part provided to surround the open end of the cylinder to which this part is assembled with a sleeve, and an end wall comprising caps forming the inlet and exhaust gas passages, this wall being reinforced by outer fins perpendicular to its outer surface above which they extend.

These fins are used for cooling.

The above-mentioned cylindrical part is advantageously provided with circular cooling fins transverse to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. The fins of the end wall of the cylinder head of said cylinder are advantageously arranged at right angles to the plane of the mean lines of the caps so that said end wall is reinforced in two directions perpendicular to one another.

For mounting the valve control levers; it is advantageously possible to see supports which can be either mounted on the cylinder head or cast iron with it, and being constituted by the extension of fins on the end wall of the cylinder head.

The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.

Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the cylinder head along line 1-1 of fi-. 2: Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the cylinder; Fig. 3 shows the cylinder head viewed from the side in the direction of arrow 3 of FIG. 1; L a fig. 4 is a plan of FIG. 3; Fig. 5 is an end view of the cylinder showing the desbus of FIG. 2.

Fig. 7 is a view from below of the cylinder head of FIG. 1.

In fig. 1, the cylinder head, which is advantageously made of cast aluminum, has a cylindrical part 10 and a planar end wall 11, which is preferably machined over its entire inner surface. It is provided, at the open end of its cylindrical part, with a machined indentation 12 fitting above the end of the cylinder dre. The cylindrical part 10 is provided with cooling fins 13, which extend perpendicular to its axis. The end wall 11 comprises, on its upper side, caps 14, 15 in the form of a pipe head, made of cast iron with it and serving respectively as an intake and exhaust passage.

These caps are arranged symmetrically above the wall 11, so that their center lines are located in the same plane and the ends 16, 17 open in opposite directions.

The mouths of the caps, as shown in fig. 3, are formed so as to enable the intake and exhaust pipes to be connected thereto.

Fins 18 extending across the cylinder head perpendicular to the plane of the center lines of the two said caps and perpendicular to the wall of the cylinder head on which they stand. It is obvious that the caps 14, 15 made of cast iron with the flat end wall 11, reinforce the latter by preventing it from bending along a line perpendicular to the median plane of the two caps. Likewise, the fins 18 reinforce the end wall 11 by preventing it from flexing along a line parallel to the median plane of the caps. The entire cylinder head is therefore sufficiently reinforced.

Appropriate bosses are provided on the cylinder head to receive bolts for securing the cylinder head to the cylinder body.

The bosses 19, 20 extend across the fins 13 with which they are integral and terminate at the height of the upper fin. The bolt holes are designated 21 and 22 in fig. 3. The other wise bos are located next to the caps and form a body with their side walls. Thus the bosses 23 and 24 are each located on one side of the intake cap 14. the bosses 25, 26 are similarly formed relative to the exhaust cap. I1 is advantageous, when the bosses are thus formed integrally with the caps, that they have a greater depth (fig.3), so as to facilitate access to the nuts which are screwed thereon.

A drilled and tapped opening 27 is provided to receive the cylinder spark plug, located so as to bring the spark plug closer to the cylinder inlet port.

The inner ends of the two cups 14, 15 respectively form the intake and exhaust ports of the cylinder, as shown at 28 and 29 in FIGS. 1 and 7. The valve seats are formed by rings 30, 31, cast in position in the cylinder head and provided respec tively with flanges 32, 33 with notches suitably engaging the cylinder head body.

Said flanges are notched at 34 and 35 for the valve seats which are closest to each other, that is to say in the middle of the cylinder, so as to provide a sufficient metal thickness at the location 36 of the end wall 11 between the two valve openings. In this way, the maximum diameter of the intake and exhaust ports can be used without weakening the cylinder head.

The valve stems go up through apertures 37, 38 suitably located in the top wall of the caps 14 and 15 respectively, they are controlled from above by means of some suitable mechanism. Where control levers are used, they will be mounted on the supports 39, 40, 41 (fig. 4) formed by the extension of certain fins (fig. 3). In order to ensure the solidity of these supports, the three fins which form them are provided a little, thicker: than the others. they are connected, near their upper end, by a bridge 42 (fig. 3).

The upper ends of the supports are reinforced (Fig. 1) and fitted to receive a journal carrying control levers for the inlet and exhaust valves respectively.

The cyliridrc @, for which the cylinder head described above is intended, is represented by FIGS. 12, 5 and 6. In the case of an engine intended for a light vehicle. the cylinder 43 will advantageously be executed in the tank, open at both ends.

It is machined at its upper end, at 44, so as to fit exactly inside the recessed portion 12 of the cylinder head, to which it is fixed by means of bolts passing through said bosses of the cylinder head and suitably spaced holes -15 provided in bosses 96 around the cylinder.

The cylinder 42 is provided with radial cooling fins, E me nt 47 s (mblable to fins 13 (the cylinder head. The bosses 46 are formed by a snapping of the first two fins of the cylinder. Near its base, the cylinder. has an outer flange 48 provided with bolt holes 49 or other suitable means to allow its attachment to a housing,

the cylinder being preferably machined f xtérieurc ment at its base 50 so as to fit into the housing.

The fins 97 are notched at 51 to allow the introduction of the bolts into the holes 49 (fig. 5).

With regard to the sleeve assembly of the cylinder in the cylinder head, it is essential that the male part be of sufficient depth to prevent the flame of the explosion from destroying the gasket. It is possible to use the cylinder of the construction shown without the interposition of gasket between it and the cylinder head, but with larger cylinders where (no gasket would be necessary, it is essential that this last be protected. efficiently flame thanks to the depth of the sleeve.

As regards the fixing of the calasse to the cylinder, the preferable method is to use bolters as mentioned above, however in some cases, for example for large units, this will have to be done. use of studs fixed in the cylinder head. This requires the enlargement of the space between the bosses -16 of the cylindrical body and the next lower lette in order to allow the introduction of the nuts, the arrangement being the same.

When using molten cylinders, the bosses are. provided in position as shown in fig. 6. but for steel cylinders it is preferable to provide the nether metal for the bosses all around the cylinder and to remove it by machining between the bosses. to form the cooling fins.
