Description

Process for the production of leather. The purpose of tanning pelts and hides is to first protect the skin from rot, but then also to preserve it in such a way that its character as leather emerges instead of its parchment-like condition. In addition to the well-known organic tanning agents, the salts of trivalent chromium, in particular, have become naturalized in tanning, which are used exclusively for the production of upper leather.

Attempts have also been made to introduce the cheaper iron for chromium, but without any consequence. The leather tanned with iron up to now shows, in addition to the fragility of the grain, great resemblance to dried skin.

The present invention now remedies this drawback. It has been shown that even in the presence of iron saline, tanning can be achieved which is similar to that of vegetable tanning agents. if the tanning is carried out in the presence of the constituents which are extracted from wood, straw and other vegetable matter by alkali.

They form dark brown colored solutions, which are partially precipitated by acids and optic metal salts. If iron alum is added to such a solution, for example made by boiling straw with sodium hydroxide, a yellowish precipitate slowly separates out. If this suspension is not allowed to act on a skin, after fourteen days a leather is obtained that is as good as the one obtained with oak bark. You can naturally improve the tanning with chromium salt.

Example: 50 kg of iron alum are completely dissolved in 4135 liters of water. An extract is slowly issued while stirring constantly. the diireli boiling of 7. (_ 10 kg of straw was obtained with 100 kg of 5% sodium hydroxide solution. The addition is only continued for so long that the cesariite solution retains a weakly acidic cliara.

Thinner skins to achieve upper leather are in this broth in about \? 4 hours, o, ugh. thicker ones in five to ten days. The leather is immediately "ready for use" after tanning.
