Description

Process for fixing to a glass support a conductor whose metal consists at least in part of nickel. The present invention relates to a method for fixing, to it a glass support, a conductor whose metal consists at least in part of nickel. To date, more than one attempt has been made to use nickel for this purpose, in the manufacture of incandescent lamps for example. But the difficulty has always resided in the fixing of a conductor of this metal in a glass support, since a large quantity of gas is given off during this operation and makes the hermetic sealing of this metal practically impossible.

Also, the difference. coefficients of expansion of nickel and glass causes cracks under the influence of temperature change.

The method according to the invention consists in modifying the methods of the conductor by heating it to white in a container which does not contain oxygen, in cooling the conductor and in sealing the latter hermetically in a glass support.

Here is an embodiment of the invention: Put a nickel wire reduced to a thin and narrow blade in a container filled with an inert gas, such as hydrogen or a zote, and pass a current through it. electric, so that the metal is heated for 15 to 60 minutes, until it arrives at incandescent, almost to its melting point, that is to say to about 1,400 degrees.

Then cut the current and let the metal wire cool down and then introduce it into a glass support, previously heated, as if it were a platinum wire, steel or ordinary nickel and finally compress the support so that the metal wire introduced is hermetically enclosed and sealed.

As a result of this treatment, the nickel becomes more or less flexible and supple and no gas is given off when it is immersed in glass in the semi-molten state; which makes it possible to seal it hermetically in the glass and to handle it, to make it a conductor, by a simple process and without the slightest experience acquired, but absolutely the same as. platinum, a metal so expensive.

A nickel conductor treated according to the method of this invention can be drawn into a thin strip with or without a groove in its length and, therefore, with a wider surface area, when there is a groove.

The process is also applicable to pure nickel and to nickel alloys such as for example chromed nickel.
