Process for the production of ethyl alcohol from acetaldehyde. The main patent describes a process for the production of ethyl alcohol by catalytic reduction of acetaldehyde vapor to alcohol using hydrogen, which is characterized in that finely divided copper obtained from a precipitated compound by reduction, advantageously at low temperature, is used as the catalyst.
It has now been shown that excellent yields are also obtained in the reduction of Acetalclehyd- to alcohol. if one passes the acetaldehyde with hydrogen over such copper, which from one in; other way than by precipitation below glowing heat generated copper compound by reduction, expediently at low Tem temperatures.
Such copper, like the one mentioned in the main patent, also has the advantage that it enables an excellent course of the reduction of acetaldehyde even at low temperatures, below 200, with the opposite reaction, i.e. the hydrogen-releasing effect of copper, being practical does not appear yet. Activators can also be added to the copper in both the above process and that of the main patent.
<I> Example </I> So-called natural copper C or some other copper powder is applied to pumice stone with water glass or colloidal silica, oxidized at 200 'and * then reduced again at 200 to <B> 250' </B>, whereupon it used to prepare alcohol by passing acetaldehyde vapor and hydrogen at about 200 '.
Instead of water glass or colloidal silica, other activators can also be added.
<I> Example 2 </I> Formic acid copper is applied to pumice stone, treated with hydrogen at around 200 to <B> 250 '</B> C and used to produce alcohol.
<I> Example 3: </I> Malachite in coarse pieces is reduced at 200 to 250 'and can then also be used with excellent success to produce alcohol from acetaldehyde and paraldehyde.
