Description

A method and apparatus for the electrical treatment of goods with a view to destroying bacteria, insects, worms etc. which may infest them. The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the electrical treatment of goods for the destruction of bacteria, insects, etc., which may infest them.

Without enumerating all the goods which can be treated by the process according to the invention, one can particularly mention seeds, beans, crushed cereals, ground or not, dried fruits, then furs, woolens, etc. It should be noted, however, that the invention is not limited to the treatment of the goods referred to above and that it can be applied to the treatment of many other goods for the destruction of bacteria, insects etc. , who can celebrate them.

According to the process, the goods to be treated are subjected to the action of at least one disruptive discharge of a current. Electricity of a lower density than that capable of deteriorating, for example by carbonization, dehydration etc., the goods and of a lower voltage than that which would be capable of causing the goods to break.

This process can allow the treatment of the goods, not only when they are not wrapped, but also when they are enclosed in envelopes such as cardboard boxes, packages etc.

One embodiment of this method is that where the goods to be treated are subjected to at least one electric discharge through at least one spark gap connected in series to an electric capacitor, and where the potential difference is adjusted and where the density of the current applied to the spark gap is limited to values lower than those capable of damaging the goods, the goods to be treated preferably being moved through the field in which the electric discharge occurs.

The goods to be treated can receive the disruptive discharge of the spark gap through them while they are interposed in series between the electrodes of the spark gap. In addition, according to a special embodiment, they can be subjected successively to the action of several electric discharges produced at different points by several spark gaps connected simultaneously in series to an electric capacitor.

The apparatus for carrying out the process has the peculiarity that an electric circuit contains an electric discharge device with at least one spark gap arranged so as to receive, between its electrodes, the goods to be treated and a capacitor device. electrical connected in series with said discharge device.

One embodiment of this apparatus is that in which the electric capacitance device comprises several capacitors, each of which contains several small capacitor plates in parallel, connected, on the one hand, to a high voltage current source and, on the other hand. on the other hand, to the spark gap electrodes.

In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the apparatus forming part of the invention.

Fig. 1 shows this embodiment partially in section, partially in lateral elevation; Fig. 2 is a plan view of part of the apparatus shown in FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a construction detail.

In this drawing, 1 designates a power supply transformer, the secondary of which is connected by wires 2 to rods 3 and 4 supported by support insulators, a portion of which is shown in plan at 5 in FIG. 2. The rods 3 and 4 are connected to the armatures 6 and 7 of two capacitors which they support. These condenser frames have the shape of a hollow body facing each other by large flat surfaces.

They are rounded at their outer edge so as to prevent too great a concentration of flux at these points and they are placed in containers 10 and 11 made of dielectric material, for example of "bakelized" fiber. These vessels are filled with a dielectric liquid, such as transformer oil, paraffin oil, etc. This liquid is introduced. in the containers 10 and 11 by pipes 13 which can be closed by plugs plugs.

Of course, one could also use, instead of the dielectric liquid, a solid dielectric mass, such as a wax such as ceresin. With the capacitor frames 6 and 7 are combined a number of small capacitor plates 15 and 16, placed inside the opposite adjacent walls of the receptacles 10 and 11 which support them. To prevent liquid leakage around the small condenser plates, these are provided with a small upright central projection 17 (fig. 3) which forms a tight seal on said walls of the containers 10 and 11 and maintains the other part of the plate. their lower surface remote from the walls of the containers 10 and 11 on which they are mounted.

The liquid 12 of the containers 10 and 11 occupies the spaces existing between the capacitor armatures 6 and 7 and the respective groups of small plates 15 and 16; it constitutes the dielectric between said armatures 6 and 7 and the respective groups of small plates 15 and 16 and between these plates themselves.

The small plates 15 and 16 are connected by rods 18, passing through the opposing adjacent walls of the vessels 10 and 11, to the electrodes 20 of several air gap spark gaps, placed in parallel with each other, the electrodes thereof being arranged in pairs facing each other, as shown in fig. 1.

It will be noted that in the apparatus represented, two capacitors have been provided, each of which comprises as a second armature a series of small plates and that the two capacitors are connected in series by the intermediary of the air space formed by the opposing electrodes 20 respectively connected to the various capacitor plates as already described. It is obvious, however, that one could also obtain the desired result by means of a single capacitor. The capacitors shown, which act as an electric capacitor, distribute the application of the potential drop and limit the current density to values lower than those which could produce the breakage of the goods to be treated.

To transport the goods to be treated in the air gap between the electrodes 20 of the spark gaps, a conveying device is provided consisting of a conveyor belt 25 of dielectric material, supported by rotating pulleys 26 controlled by any source of motive power (not shown).

In fig. 2 showing the upper strand stretched out of this transport belt, the lower receptacle 11 and the lower group of electrodes 20 carried by the latter are seen from above, and it can be seen that the two groups of electrodes 20 are arranged so as to so as to each occupy the surface of an oblong rectangle. It will be noted that the arrangement is such that the belt of the conveyor device extends obliquely. with respect to the longitudinal direction of the groups of electrodes 20.

One of the purposes of this arrangement is to cause the goods to travel obliquely between the two groups of spark gap electrodes so that all the particles of the goods successively come into position to be subjected to the discharge of the current between the electrodes. 20; a practically homogeneous treatment of the goods passing between the groups of electrodes is thus obtained.

In the apparatus shown, each group of electrodes 20 has five rows of electrodes and thirty electrodes in each row. If it is assumed that the apparatus is connected to a source of alternating current of sixty periods, this current will produce one hundred and twenty discharges per second between each pair of spark gap electrodes 20.

The distance between the discharge points through the commodity to be treated or in other words the number of discharges required per unit area of the commodity varies with the nature of the material. In general; the distance between the points of discharge through various goods varies from 0.5 to 2.5 mm.

To ensure a homogeneous treatment and for more efficiency, the distance of the electrodes between which the discharge takes place will be as small as possible, while being large enough for the passage of the conveyor belt 25 and the goods carried by it. the latter between the two groups of electrodes 20.

The electrodes 20 are formed by spheres, the radius of which is preferably about one third of the interval in which the discharge takes place.

After a very prolonged use the material of which the electrode is made crumbles and its surface becomes rough. Of course, the larger the radius of the sphere, the less the roughness changes the voltage required to produce the spark at the surface of the electrodes.

The electrodes of each group, that is to say the electrodes situated on the same side, positive or negative, are advantageously separated from each other by a distance equal to an appropriate fraction of the length of the gap in which discharges, in order to avoid the production of discharges between these electrodes.

Of course, the dielectric power of the capacitors will have to be large enough to prevent them from breaking, otherwise the goods will be damaged.

In establishing the apparatus described, the manufacturer must take into account the nature of the goods to be treated and he must provide dielectrics of dimensions and dielectric constant such that the goods alone or with their envelope are not subjected to exaggerated efforts. - It should also be remembered that, in general, in the processing of cereals enclosed in cardboard boxes, the amount of energy which can be used per unit discharge is limited by the box. There are however some exceptions for example - for rolled oats.

For grain cereals, the landfill tends to make its way around the grains, while for some other commodities, eg rolled oats, the landfill tends to puncture them. In general, the smaller the particles treated, the less energy must be used per unit discharge. For example, buckwheat flour would be enhanced by a discharge which would not damage the wheat and the latter would be charred by a discharge which would not damage the rice.

The operation of the device described is as follows: The voltage of the secondary winding of transformer 1 is applied to the device, that is to say to the two capacitors as described above. When the voltage reaches its breakdown value, there is a discharge in the air between the electrodes 20. The discharge in the air makes the latter conductive so that almost all of the voltage is applied to the dielectrics of the capacitors and to a corresponding part of the belt and the cardboard box in the event that the goods are enclosed in a box.

The apparatus described and shown is constructed and operated in such a way that the voltage applied to the dielectrics of the capacitors is below the value which would cause them to rupture; this condition being met, neither the belt nor the cardboard will be damaged.

When using an alternating current, the voltage varies from zero to its highest value and vice versa, the operation of the apparatus and the operation of the process are the same for the successive alternations of the alternating current. It is obvious that one can use an oscillating current or a current of the same direction to carry out the method, the invention in no way involving the use of alternating current alone.

Finally, we can also cite the variant of the device comprising several groups of spark gaps, one of these groups intended to receive the goods to be treated, present between its electrodes a dielectric with a lower coefficient than the dielectric of the spark gaps. on the other or other groups of spark gaps.
