Two-stroke internal combustion engine. This invention relates to a two-stroke internal combustion engine of the kind comprising at least one cylinder with two engine pistons housed therein, arranged one inside the other and connected to cranks placed 180 from each other. on the crankshaft, the combustion chamber being formed between the two pistons, and the space which is inside the cylinder beyond one of the udders being used to obtain an initial compression of the mixture combustible.
According to this invention, one of the engine pistons is arranged to compress air inside the crankcase and, in order to obtain good efficiency, means are provided for use. the exhaust gas scavenging, .l'air which is compressed inside the housing during each movement towards the outside of said piston.
If desired, a further portion of this air can be used to vary the concentration of the fuel mixture wedged initially in the initial compression space of the engine cylinder. An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, schematically and by way of example, in the accompanying drawing showing in vertical section a single cylinder engine built in accordance with this invention.
In this drawing, A 'designates the engine cylinder, attached to the crankcase- B in which the crankshaft C. turns. D represents the engine flywheel and D the spark plug.
Ire. ordinary piston F, which is connected to the crank C 'of the shaft C by a connecting rod 1, is arranged to move inside a hollow piston 2, in the form of a sleeve, which can slide in the inside the cylinder A and which is connected by connecting rods 3, of an Ion-, gueur equal to that of the main connecting rod 1; the cranks 01, arranged on the shaft C opposite to the crank C '.
In the side wall of the piston-sleeve 2 there is an orifice- for admixture 4 which can coincide with a similar orifice- provided in the side wall of cylinder A and communicating by a pipe 5 with the space 6 which is located in the cylinder above the quill piston 2. The intake port 4 can also be made to communicate with the inside of the housing B ,. by means of a pipe 7 shown in dotted lines and provided with a shutter valve 8. The orifice 4 is also arranged to unmask the spark plug E when the sleeve piston 2 moves downwards in the position d 'ignition.
The sleeve piston 2 comprises an exhaust port 9 which can coincide, when the movable members are in the position indicated, with a similar orifice drilled in the side wall of the cylinder A. The exhaust port 9 is masked. and unmasked by the internal piston .F, when this piston and the sleeve piston 2 perform a back-and-forth movement inside the cylinder. The orifices 10 made in the sleeve piston 2 are also arranged to be masked and unmasked by the piston F. The orifices 10 open into a space 11 formed by the enlarged lower part of the cylinder .g and communicate with the interior of the cylinder. housing B.
The combustible mixture is supplied to space 6 of cylinder A of the engine, and air to the crankcase B, through suitable valves 12 and 13, respectively.
The engine described operates as follows: When the moving parts are in the position shown in the drawing, the intake port 4 is open and the fuel mixture, previously compressed in the space 6 by the movement towards the outside the sleeve piston 2, passes through the pipe 5 and the open orifice 4 in the combustion chamber formed between the sleeve piston 2 and the piston F. During the downward stroke of the sleeve piston 2, the piston F moves in either the opposite or upward direction so that the inlet 4, the 10 ports and the 9 exhaust port close and the mixture in the combustion chamber is compressed. At the same time,
a new quantity of combustible mixture is sucked, by the downward movement of the udder ton-barrel 2 with the aid of the valve 12, into the space 6 and air is sucked by the upward movement of the piston F at the using the valve 13, inside the housing B. At the end. of the stroke of the piston-sleeve, the spark plug B is unmasked by port 4 and the mixture is ignited. the effect of the explosion separates the piston-sleeve 2 and the piston F and causes them to communicate to the crank shaft an equal driving impulse to make it turn.
At the same time, the load sucked into space 6 is compressed by the upward movement of the cylinder piston 2, just as air is compressed in the housing B by the downward movement of the piston F. Near the end of the driving stroke, the exhaust port 9 opens, then the air intake ports 10 are unmasked and allow the compressed air in the crankcase to escape through the exhaust port or green by dragging the gases resulting from combustion into the combustion chamber (exhaust gas bathing). The inlet 4 also opens and the fresh charge compressed in the space 6 passes into the combustion chamber at the top of the latter.
A repetition of the cycle takes place and the crankshaft receives a driving impulse with each revolution.
It will be noted that the exhaust port 9 is arranged to open before the scavenging air inlet ports 10 in order to allow the pressure in the combustion chamber to be lowered below that of the combustion chamber. The air which enters this chamber through the orifices 10. It can also be seen that the sleeve piston 2 acts so as to protect the spark plug from the hot gases of the combustion chamber except when the explosion takes place.
When using the pipe 7 with the tap 8, open, a relatively rich mixture can be used to be sucked into space 6 and be compressed in the latter in the manner already described, this mixture being diluted by passing through the combustion chamber by means of additional compressed air coming from the casing B via pipe 7. The quantity of additional air supplied, and consequently the concentration of the combustible mixture, is controlled by the valve 8. of the pipe 7.
The engine depicted with regard to the drawing, like other engines of the two-stroke type, is directly reversible and works equally well in either direction, but an advantage of this engine is that the mixture that goes into it the combustion chamber at the initial compression, has a tendency to displace any residual gases and this fact, together with the action of the compressed air coming from the crankcase, produces an efficient sweeping of the combustion chamber and decreases the misfires. 'ignition.
It is obvious that the invention can also be applied to polycylindrical engines. The cylinder or cylinders of the engine may be air cooled. or with water, the engine can be lubricated under pressure or by splashing, just as any ignition system can be applied.
