Description

A method of manufacturing vacuum tubes comprising a heated filament and at least two other electrodes, one of which is filiform, and a vacuum tube obtained by said process. The invention relates to vacuum tubes comprising a heated filament and at least two other electrodes, one of which is filiform, such as most tubes with three electrodes used as detectors, amplifiers or wave generators in telephony and in wireless telegraphy. wire, the second wire electrode generally serving as a control electrode or grid.

We know that, during the manufacture of these tubes, an attempt is made to produce the most perfect vacuum possible therein, and that, during this operation, the filament is heated and used as a cathode, to bombard with rays. cathode the other electrodes, bringing them red and expelling the gases they contain. It is therefore necessary to give said filament a relatively large section in order to avoid breaking during this operation.

It is also possible to expel the gases contained in the second filiform electrode by heating it directly with a current. The invention consists in using at the same time as a cathode this second filiform electrode, when the gases are driven out in a known manner by means of a current which passes through it, the emitted electrons serving to bombard the other or the other electrodes in the tube. A potential difference of the order of magnitude of a few hundred volts is applied between the second filiform electrode and the electrode to be treated; the gases contained in this electrode are thus evacuated.

The goal of this. The invention is to be able to provide these tubes with a filament of very small cross-section without fear of its breaking or deterioration during the manufacture of the apparatus, while ensuring the possibility of expelling the gases from all the electrodes, whatever their size. 'be the dimensions.

The invention is explained with the aid of the figures of the appended drawing, given by way of example.

The, fig. 1.shows a vacuum tube comprising a filament or cathode a, intended to be heated during normal operation of the tube, and a control electrode or grid b formed by a metal wire wound helically around the filament and connected by a end with a pin b, used for the application of the control voltage on the electrode b. An electrode c, intended to function as an anode, consisting of a plate shaped along a cylindrical surface surrounding the electrode b, is connected to a pin c, serving to apply a suitable voltage to said electrode.

While in the tubes in which the evacuation is to be done by the ordinary method, one of the ends of the electrode b can be left free or be connected to the pin b1, in the case of the drawing said end is connected to an independent pin b ..

When. manufacture, to drive the gases from the plate electrode c, instead of sending the current in the AC filament by connecting the pins al and a2 of the latter to the two poles of a suitable current source, we can send the current in electrode b by connecting pins b ,, and b. to both poles of a suitable current source.

In this way, it is easy to obtain, by means of a suitable electric field, the necessary bombardment to heat the electrode c, the electrode b playing the role of cathode, without using the filament, which may have then a diameter as small as you want, and be very fragile; it can, for example, be a metallic wire covered with oxides. In addition, the bom barding of the electrode c is facilitated by the decrease in resistance due to the absence of an electrode between the cathode constituted by the electrode b and the electrode c, and at the surface relatively large of said cathode. Finally, since the filament can have a very small diameter, one can build tubes which consume very little and which can be supplied by batteries.

The pin b2 is generally not used during the operation of the tube, but, if the dimensions of the wire constituting the grid are suitably chosen, we can send, without annoying heating, a current in the grid electrode b and thus distribute along it a voltage which varies in such a way that the desired voltage difference, between the grid and the filament, is maintained over the entire length of the two electrodes. Thus the grid b has the same effect on the electrons which leave the filament, in all the points of this one.

In order to avoid deformations of the electrode b, it can be supported by a small rod .x (fig. 2) made of an insulating body capable of withstanding high temperatures, such as quartz, at which said electrode is fixed at several points.
