Description

High voltage capacitor. In the construction of capacitors for high voltages one comes up against a difficulty arising from the influence of the edges of the conductive plates arranged opposite one another. The electric density increases, in fact, considerably, when one approaches the edges of the plates and takes on the edges themselves a very great value if these are thin or cut at sharp angles.

The breakdown voltage at which the dielectric breakthrough occurs decreases with the increase in this density, so that the capacitor can be used only for an operating voltage much lower than that which corresponds to the thickness of the dielectric in the, central part of the plates, and even under these conditions it always presents weak points on these edges which can lead to its destruction.

The object of the present invention is a capacitor for high voltage free from these drawbacks, which is characterized in that each of its plates is formed, at least in its part adjacent to the edges, by rods with rounded outer surface of which, the The distance from each other increases as one approaches the edges of the plates, in such a proportion for each plate that the distance between the plates increases as one approaches the edges.

The accompanying drawing shows in cross section, fig. 1, and in elevation, fig. 2, an embodiment of the object of the invention.

In this embodiment, each plate is constituted by a central cylindrical part a which is constituted by two sheets a1 and a2 welded together and bordered all around by a tube g carefully connected to the central part, for example, by tin, to avoid sharp angles. On either side of the central part are arranged tubes c in the form of rings which are connected to each other by connections d made so as to avoid parts of small radius or sharp edges. The distance between plates is regulated by blocks of insulation placed from distance to distance.

The diameter of the tubes c is related to the dimensions of the apparatus; in general, the most advantageous diameter is: between one third and one tenth of the distance between the plates. By approaching the edges of the plates ,. the spacing between the tubes c increases, but unequally for the two neighboring plates of the capacitor, as shown in fis. 1, so that the distance between the tubes, that is to say between the plates, increases as one approaches the edges of the plates. This way, the electrical density will not increase dangerously at the edges.

This can be achieved all the better since it is then possible to increase the diameter of the tubes at the periphery of the plate while increasing the distance of these tubes at ceu = x from neighboring plates. It suffices for this to properly adjust the spacings of the successive tubes, as we have. shown on the fis. 1.

Instead of tubes, one can obviously use solid rods. The plates can be formed entirely of rods or tubes.

From the practical point of view, it is possible to adopt circular plates formed of a spiral, of rods whose edge rings move apart, the last coil either closing or not in a circle. It is also possible to adopt square or rectangular plates formed of tubes or rods suitably curved at the angles of the square or of the rectangle, the central part of the plates being able or not to be constituted by a flat surface.

In the case of cylindrical plates, the cylinders can still be composed of a kind of helix with increasing pitch when one arrives at the edges. As always, the medium can be formed from sheet metal wound into a cylinder, the tubes being used only towards the edges. The central part could also be made of corrugated sheets, with corrugation following straight or curved lines.

In <B> the '</B> case of capacitors of great length, if the cylindrical shape has been chosen, for example, it is advantageous to construct several elementary cylinders of reduced dimensions in length; each of these cylinders will be more manageable and may be made of sheets having no joints in the lengthwise direction. Each cylinder will be terminated by one or more turns of rods or tubes which will serve to connect the elementary cylinders to each other, giving the assembly flexibility facilitating assembly.

The entire condenser will be placed in a sealed tank into which an insulating liquid, such as oil, will be introduced; some vegetable oils are quite suitable for this use; they have considerable electrical rigidity, exceeding 70,000 volts per cm, and a high specific capacity of up to 1.5 to 5, as well as a relatively low price.

Instead of liquids, one can introduce a plastic material, or a solid such as paraffin.

To avoid accidents if foreign matter floats in the liquid, barriers of cardboard or the like can be provided.

It is obvious that the invention is not limited to the embodiments which have just been described; it is thus that the arrangement of the rods or tubes, their conformation and their number can vary within wide limits. The plates can be not only constituted by solid or perforated metal sheets, but also be formed in whole or in part by substances such as paper, cardboard, wood, or others, metallized or made electrically conductive.

The plates of the capacitors according to the invention can be connected alternately to the two poles of a current source or with. triple, quadruple, etc., in the case of more than two poles as for polyphase voltages.
