Description

Impermeable fibrous article and process for its manufacture. The present invention relates to a fibrous article which is impermeable, resistant to oxidation and capable of being vulcanized to rubber, which article can therefore be used for a large number of various industrial uses, such as manufacturing. rubber tires, shoes, belts and belts; hot water monkfish, packaging, waterproof covers etc.

This article consists of a support of fibrous material impregnated with a neutral terpene sulfur compound, capable of forming non-colloidal solutions in certain organic solvents and of reacting with the rubber.

For the preparation of this article, one can proceed as follows: The support of fibrous material is treated with said terpene sulfur compound brought to the liquid state, either by dissolution in a suitable dissolvent, or by liquefaction by means of heat.

This sulphurized terpene compound can be obtained by digesting the spirit of turpentine with sulfur in a vessel connected to a reflux condenser, under desired thermal conditions. For example, for the preparation of said compound, turpentine and sulfur, in a proportion by weight of about two parts to one and a half parts (or if desired in equal weight are digested in a container provided a reflux condenser at a temperature of 140 C or above; the reaction is continued until a mass is produced which, on cooling, assumes the desired solid or semi-solid consistency.

The reaction is progressive and the sulfur combines with the turpentine, with the release of hydrogen sulphide. The duration of the treatment depends on the desired consistency of the product, the temperature, and whether the mass subjected to the treatment is agitated or not. When the reaction is carried to the end, the product obtained, that is to say the sulphurized terpene compound, is a black, hard and resistant mass, breaking according to a conchoidal case, the surfaces of which present a vitreous luster. The mass in question is soluble with reaction in turpentine, partially soluble in acetone, soluble in toluene and xylene, insoluble in water.

A fragment of this mass, manipulated between the fingers, softens under the action of the heat of the hand to the point of being able to be molded. The compound reacts chemically on the rubber at vulcanization temperatures.

In the manufacture of an article embodying the invention, it is preferable (although not essential) to dry, with moderate heating, the support of fibrous material in order to remove moisture therefrom; then it is immersed in a bath of the liquid sulphurized terpene compound or it is covered with the latter. The sulfurized terpene compound referred to here is preferably used in solution in a suitable solvent so as to rapidly penetrate the fibers' said support and the interstices which separate them; in some cases, the compound is heated to a liquid -on plastic consistency and then applied like paint.

A satisfactory solution is obtained by dissolving one part by weight of the sulfurized terpene compound in four parts, by weight, of xylene at mild temperature. After the fibrous material support has been impregnated with it, it is subjected to a sufficiently high temperature to drive off the solvent in a reasonable time; or, if desired, it is subjected to vacuum drying, in order to recover the solvent more completely according to current practice.

The fibrous support thus treated is worked in any suitable manner to allow the compound to attach thereto, and, if a solvent has been employed to liquefy the latter, the support may be subjected to moderate heat to facilitate the preparation. evaporation of the solvent. One of the great advantages of an article impregnated with the sulphurous terpene compound described herein is that this article has a tensile strength which could not be predicted from its initial strength.

This is particularly the case for papers which see their resistance increase markedly, when they are treated with said sulfurized terpene compound.
