Description

Gleichrichter.

Rectifier. The applicant has found that, in contrast to the literature in a discharge tube, the breakdown voltage de "; gas is not independent of the material of the electrodes, especially the cathode, but that if the electrode spacing is not too large or not too high gas pressure the breakdown voltage for a certain gas is largely determined by the electrode material.

The applicant has used this property for the production of a rectifier. In its simplest form it consists, for example, of a discharge tube filled with a so-called noble gas, such as argon, and two electrodes made of different materials, such as iron and magnesium. The breakdown voltage is now considerably lower when the magnesium forms the cathode than when the iron electrode is the cathode.

With an appropriately chosen alternating voltage, current is only allowed to pass if the magnesium is the cathode, so that rectification absolutely occurs. The accompanying drawing illustrates an exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention. It shows an equalizer with elbow electrodes made of dissimilar materials, which is mainly formed by a spherical glass tube, a cathode 2 made of magnesium and an anode 3 made of iron.

The electrodes are connected to the external leads by current lead wires 6 and 7 , which are airtightly fused in glass supports 8 and 9. In order to prevent destruction of the electrodes, which would have an unfavorable effect on the effect of the rectifier, a screen 4 is arranged between the electrodes, which screen is fastened by means of holding wires 5. This screen is expediently made of mica or metal or any other suitable material.

The rectifier's gas filling can consist of argon or another noble gas. If the voltage at the discharge roller is about 110 volts, alternating currents are let through on one side and are therefore converted into pulsating direct current,
