Description

Electrical device operating on the Ferraris counter principle. The present invention relates to electrical devices operating according to the principle of the Ferraris meter, in which an armature moves vis-à-vis cores traversed by the magnetic fields created by voltage and current coils and in which a plate of good electrically conductive material can be moved parallel to the armature, with a view to adjusting the motor torque necessary to overcome friction.

According to the invention, this adjustment plate is of position and shape 'such that it is only crossed, in all its adjustment positions, by the magnetic field created by the tension coil.

In the known devices, this plate has a position and a shape such that it is crossed not only by the magnetic field created by the voltage coil, but also by that created by the current coil, so that the displacement of said plate, which should only influence the engine torque, has other unwanted effects.

Note indeed that when the field created by the current coil passes through said plate, this flux creates in this plate eddy currents reacting on the magnetic field produced by the current coil and whose effect is added in closed circuit to that of the winding of this coil; it follows from it that displacement printed on the plate also entails modifications in the combined action of this winding and these eddy currents, and consequently in the adjustment of the speed of the meter under load and in the phase shift adjustment.

Devices of this kind therefore give rise to an entanglement of the various actions such that a whole series of trial and error are necessary to achieve a final adjustment.

The accompanying drawings show, by way of example; the application of the invention to a single-phase meter.

Fig. 1 is a side view and FIG. 2 a top view of the meter; fig. 3 is a view of the adjustment plate; Fig. 4 schematically shows the. arrangement of magnetic fluxes.

The apparatus comprises a frame 1 of flat shape on which is fixed by means of screws the core of laminated sheets of iron or of another magnetic material, formed of three branches 2, 3 and 4. The central branch carries a voltage coil 5 made up of a large number of fine wires, to which the potential difference of the power to be measured is applied. Below this coil, the lateral branches 3 and 4 form extensions 6 which extend to the proximity of the branch 2. Under these extensions 6, the lateral branches carry the current coils 7, which can be put in series or not.

The central branch 2 is provided at its lower part with a short-circuit ring 8 made of a material which is a good conductor of electric current, which can be fixed at an adjustable height using a pressure screw 9 .

Opposite the lower ends of the three branches, there is a part 10 made of magnetic material carried by the lower part of the frame 1 and which may optionally have come from a foundry with this frame.

Between this part 10 and the ends of the three branches turns the armature disc 11, the axis 12 of which is supported at the upper part and at the lower part by cra paudines fixed to the supports 13 and 14 of the frame.

On part 10, and below branch 2, there is a bracket 15 made of a material which is a good conductor of electric current, the upper face of which 16 serves as a plate producing the motor torque for starting and at the same time correcting the symmetry faults in the entire meter construction. For the adjustment of the position, the vertical wing of the square is for sight of buttonholes 17 allowing the sliding of the plate relative to the fixing screws 18.

For the braking of the movement of the lead 11, use is made, in the known manner, of a magnet 19 with an adjustable position by means of the screws 20.

If we refer to fig. 4, it can be seen that the voltage coil 5 produces a magnetic field whose force lines follow a path shown schematically by the dotted lines in FIG. 4. Part of these lines of force follow the path abcd, while another part of lines of force follow the path cc efc d. The lines of strength of the fields created by the current coils 7 are indicated schematically by the lines formed by dots and dots.

Part of these lines of force follows the path of an n 1) c1, while another part follows the path of d în n p r s. This figure clearly shows that the upper face 16 of the square 15 is crossed only by the active part created by the voltage coil and is not crossed by the fields coming from the current coils.

For the meter to give exact indications, the offset of the active part aefb of the flux produced by the voltage coil, with respect to the active part of the flux produced by the current coil, must be exactly 90 when this current is in phase with the voltage. The whole of this flux is itself shifted by approximately 90, because the magnetic circuit is very permeable and the coil 5 has a large number of turns.

To obtain the exact offset of 90, the ring 8 is moved up or down; as there are a number of lines of force, decreasing downwards, which close through the air between the central core and the lateral cores, the ring will be influenced to produce an offset, by a more flow or less important passing directly in the air, according to the position of the ring in height, which therefore allows the adjustment of the offset to 900.

As on the other hand the coils 7 have only a few turns and the field which they produce travels through a magnetic circuit less permeable than the previous one, the fields created by these coils do not intervene, so to speak, to change the setting of the current consumed. These different fields produce eddy currents in the disc 11, and by the mutual reaction of these currents on the fields, the torques are created which tend to make the disc of the counter turn.

8if the shift is exactly 90, these torques are proportional to the product of the voltage applied to coil 5, of the intensity of the current flowing in coils 7 and of the cosine of the offset angle between said intensity and said voltage.

The ring 8 does not cut the lines of force of the field created by the coils -7, this field is not influenced by the displacement of the ring 8.

The axis 12 carries in the usual manner a worm 21 which rotates the mid nuterie of the counter. In addition, a small wire 22 called "pin-fi # eirr" fixed on the axis 12 is attracted by the field of the coil 5 and prevents the idling of the meter.

It goes without saying that by combining two motors of the kind described above, it is possible to make a three-phase meter or a meter for two-phase power; with three motors, a counter is produced for three-phase four-wire power, and so on. We can build on the same principle wattmeters by constituting the armature of a circular sector whose movements are transmitted to an indicator needle and are effected against the action of a spring.
