Description
Discharge tube. In the case of discharge tubes, in which an independent discharge occurs between the electrodes in a gas atmosphere, it is always difficult to initiate the discharge without special auxiliary equipment which enables the tube to be connected directly to an available emergency voltage of the usual level. It is also known to initiate the discharge as well. by special choice of construction or material of the cathode.
It has also been proposed to add a small amount of non-noble gases or vapors to the gas filling in a glow lamp, but this has only been proposed in order to counteract the atomization of the cathode and to increase the service life of the lamp.
The invention now relates to a discharge tube in which the choice and composition of the gas filling a reduction of the breakdown voltage is obtained, for the purpose of initiating the discharge with great certainty without further auxiliary equipment at the usual mains voltage. For this purpose, a small amount of another gas is added to the noble gases with which the tube is filled, the ionization tension of which is lower than the tension at which the first inelastic collision occurs in the first gas.
It occurs, for example, in an enfla-. tube, in which the distance between the electrodes is about 5 cm and the gas pressure is 1 , neither in neon nor in argon at 220 volts discharge; however, if the tube is filled with a mixture of neon with 0.5 to 5 '/ o argon, se; a discharge occurs at the same voltage. The same applies to gas fillings that consist of helium with a small addition of neon, argon or crypton, or of argon with an addition of krypton or mercury.
The invention can be used with discharge tubes with gas filling for any purpose, for example like this, -well with discharge tubes for gas or glow lamps, from also with discharge tubes for rectifier, amplifiers, etc.
