Working method for the representation of alloys. The subject of the invention is the creation of a new and improved process for the production of alloys, especially those whose basic components are very different in terms of their melting points.
It is known alloys. by converting a mixture of double fluorides of the light metals on the one hand and another element, reducible by aluminum, on the other hand with the amount of aluminum powder necessary for the conversion. According to the present invention, the mixture is in the form of pressed pieces (e.g.
B. in briquette form) caused to react in a receiving metal at a temperature at least corresponding to the melting temperature of the aluminum.
The invention will be described in more detail using the example of the preparation of an alloy of silicon with aluminum. A quantity of powdered sodium silicon fluoride, such as that obtained in huge quantities as a by-product <B> 9 </B> t 'in the production of the fertilizer known as superpliosphate, is mixed with powdered, metallic aluminum in the ratio of 564 to 108 </B> mixed. This 3Escliuii, -, - is mixed with a dilute solution of ', # \ Tatriumsilikat as a binding agent and shaped into blocks, lumps or spheres of the appropriate size.
These are placed in a bath of molten aluminum, the bath being constantly stirred.
The following reaction occurs: <B> 3 </B> Na # Si F, - # 4 <B> Al = 3 </B> Si <B> + 6 </B> NaF <B> + </ B> 4AIF ,. The temperature of the aluminum melt does not need to be increased above its melting point, but it must be appropriately maintained.
The reaction is somewhat exothermic and takes place rapidly, whereby an alloy of the silicon with the metal of the bath is formed at a heat level which is much lower than the melting point of silicon, which is probably due to the fact that the silicon is in the nascent state becomes free.
The non-metallic products of the reaction float on the Aletail in the form of a light, clear and easily meltable slag, which is an extremely good], lel, -trolyte for the production of metallic aluminum.
The slag and metal are separated from each other in some convenient way, such as B. by Abscliütteii or <B> Skimming </B>.
In view of the fact that the <B> 1 </B> amount of slag that is formed in the course of this reaction can easily be much larger than the mence that is used as an electrolyte during aluminum production.
Can be used, it is preferred in most cases <B> '</B> to mix a quantity of powdered metallic silicon with the substances mentioned above, which is then dissolved after introduction into the bath. 2, i it is not necessary to increase the degree of warmth of the metal particularly to the extent that it should be gasped. So this reaction does not only serve to
to bind the silicon in the bath by reduction, but aaoh rLazu, the l ',' infüliriino- to learn from silicon already reduced in another way. namely, the latter can be contained in 'any arbitrary' #, en amount up to <B> 75 </B> jo of the -any men-s in the mixture having the shape of the piece.,
without having to increase the temperature of the bath. If this amount is exceeded, it is necessary to heat the bath to a higher degree of heat.
The invention can also be used when aluminum is to be alloyed with any other substance besides silicon. One starts with a double fluoride of sodium L and the desired metal, e.g.
B. the double fluoride of sodium and boron, beryllium seandium, ytterbium., Yftrium <B> '</B> Lanthanum. Titanium. Zirconiu-ai. Ceriuni. Thorium, Vanadium, Niobium, Tantalum, Chromium. Iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel.
Copper or uranium, depending on whether an alloy of one or the other metal of the bath is desired. Incidentally, other metals besides those mentioned above can be used, but the above-mentioned have been used for experiments with Erfohy, and even if certain others, such as zinc, can be treated in the same way,
so besides the ones listed above, the others of -erily, practical value, the method according to the invention can also be used for the introduction of other metals with silicon into the lie, simply by using the metal in question is added to the mixture in finely divided form.
For example, a quantity of tungsten or iXol # "bd.2iii can be mixed with the sodium silicate imfluoride and ammonium. With or without the addition of an amount of metallic silicon:
nl # <B><I>kn</I> </B> nii (1 it can be introduced into the bathroom with a "N # 'ärmf -, -, grad. which is much lower than the' de ' r naeli the usual method <B> n </B> for the union <B> g </B> of these substances would be necessary.
The process is not limited to the introduction of the metal together with the silicon fluoride, but it can also be used together with any other double fluoride which contains a component which can be replaced by aluminum.
So it is very difficult under normal circumstances. to produce an alloy I 2n of aluminum and Niekel because of their widely spaced melting point:
but if one adds a mixture of sodium-nickel double fluoride, aluminum powder and powdered Niehel to a bath of gelatinized rature, and very easily,
whereby it forms a completely meltable and easily irriiba re Sehlaeke.
This process, however, is not limited to the manufacture of Le (Yieriiil () 'Clll. Which have aluminum as a basis. Rather, it is equally applicable to the manufacture of alloys of any metal with any other metal, although its largest The meaning relates to the production of lie-, ierun "eii. Their individual ED LI components differ greatly in their melting point.
For example, if you want to alloy zirhonium and iron, the N sodium-zirkenium double fluoride is mixed with aluminum and placed in a bath of molten iron. If the components are briquetted well, the reaction will be almost entirely quantitative, with all of the zirconium being ligated and none of that. Aluminum remains dissolved in the bath.
In order to alloy molybdenum, Wolfrain, uranium, or vanadium with cast iron or any similar case in the same way, a quantity of double fluoride of iron and sodium is added with the requisite amount of aluminum powder and the required amount of metal mixed together that is to be alloyed.
) When the well-agglomerated quantity is introduced into the bath of molten iron. the desired effect occurs. The iron double fluoride has been proposed to prevent contamination of the alloy by a third metal, although any double fluoride that releases a metal that does not see, but acts on the final product, such as z. B. Manganese.
The working process can be used to produce any alloy, and its greatest advantage is that it also enables the production of alloys of the rare earth metals, which are extremely difficult to produce because they are very difficult to reduce on their own.
In some cases a mixture of different double fluorides can of course also be used to introduce several substances into a base metal.
The slag resulting from this conversion process is a new and improved electrolyte for the production of metallic aluminum, independent of the natural cryolite; it is an electrolyte made from materials that are now waste by-products of large industries and that can be supplied in unlimited quantities.
