Description

       L.-I.        fig.    1 en est une     élévation    latérale;  La fil-. 2 en est une vue en plan, la  superstructure étant enlevée:  La     fim.    3 en est une élévation arrière;  La,     fig.    4 en est une coupe fragmentaire  suivant la ligne 4-4 de la fia. 2;       La    fi-. 5 -est une vue en perspective quel  que peu schématique du châssis;    La     fig.    6 est une coupe longitudinale  d'un tambour tracteur;  Les     fig.    7 et 8 sont des détails de parties  du     châssis;     La     fig.    9 est une élévation, à phis grande  échelle, du mécanisme de direction;

Automobile which can move on soils having a low consistency and in particular on snow, the invention relates to an automobile which can move on soils offering little consistency and in particular on snow, comprising a chassis, an engine and a transmission mechanism.

According to the invention, the automobile is # carried by drive members in the form of revolu- Ilion body with longitudinal axes provided with ribs, specific to. receive a rotational movement about their axis by means of the transmission mechanism and mounted on the frame so as to be able to oscillate about a transverse axis.

The attached drawing represents. by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.

       L.-I. fig. 1 is a side elevation; The thread-. 2 is a plan view, the superstructure being removed: The fim. 3 is a rear elevation; The, fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken along line 4-4 of the fia. 2; The fi-. 5 -is a somewhat schematic perspective view of the chassis; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of a tractor drum; Figs. 7 and 8 are details of parts of the frame; Fig. 9 is a large-scale elevation of the steering mechanism;

Figs. 10 and 7.1 are schematic views and show the accommodation of the car to inequalities; Fig. 12 is a longitudinal section of a tractor drum; Figs. 13 and 1.4 are details of the tractor shaft and transverse strut structure.

The body B of the car is mounted on a usual chassis I 'carrying the engine 11l, the gearbox G and the clutch C, as well as suitable control devices such as the operating lever. mechanism L.

Under the frame is suspended, by means of ears - <B> 1. </B> (fig. <B> 5), </B> a cross member 2 provided with hanging ends 3, and a side member 4 is suspended under the beam 2 by means of an upright: 5. At the corners of the frame are arms 6 and 8 carrying vertical guides 7 and 9 in which the ends of the shafts which carry the tractor drums are mounted. The guides are held laterally by spacers 10 and 11 assembled with the side member 4. A stirrup 10.1 is assembled with the front ends of the chassis side members and with the side member 4 under the engine.

The car further comprises two rigid assemblies T each comprising a mature longitudinal rear 12 disposed on the side of the frame F, slightly curved and terminated at. its ends by two vertical branches 13 and 14 and an oscillating stirrup 15 connected to the mature rear 12 by two arms 16 assembled to the frame at 16a and to the stirrup at separate points 16b and 16c. Each of the calipers 15 has two bearings 17. On each side of the car is a longitudinal shaft 18 on which are wedged two tractor drums.

This shaft is mounted in the two bearings 17 and in bearings 19 and 20 provided at the ends 1 3 and 14 of the frame 12. Each bracket 15 comprises a bearing 21 carrying a pin 2- 'provided on a lug 23 fixed on the 'Corresponding end of the cross member 2. The brackets 15 * can rotate about an axis 5 mounted transversely in the spar 4 and in bearings 24 integral with the brackets 15 (fil-. 4 and 7).

This axis \? 5 can be a bolt tr = facing the side member 4 at a location <U> which </U> can be reinforced by plates 26, this bolt being fixed by nuts 27.

This mounting can be completed by equipping each bracket 15 with two arms 140 to see flanges 141 applying against plates 14-2 fixed to the spar 4. These flanges 7-1-1 are held against said spar by ears. 143 which are attached to the lanyard and whose ends 1.44 cover the flanges 1a-1 (fig. 7 and 8). The flanges 141 are free to oscillate vertically, but are prevented from executing a lateral movement.

The rear end of each of the shafts 18 is mounted in a bearing presented by a slide 29 (fib. 13 and 14) comprising vertical faces 29a provided with journals 29b. These are mounted in shoes 29e which slide on the faces 9a of the guides 9. The front end of the shafts 18 is mounted in the same manner in a bearing presented by a slide 28 which can move in a guide 7. Edges? 9d prevent. horizontal movement of the sliders along the shafts 18.

The guide system which has just been described prevents the lateral displacement of the shafts 18. It allows to a certain extent the oscillation of the shafts in a longitudinal vertical plane, this oscillation being however limited to the upper and lower ends of the guides 7 and 9.

The front tractor drums 35 present from a point 38 and forward a surface 37 which takes on an extended shape. The rear portion of the ob2val surface <B> 37 </B> of the front drums carries helical nerves 39 serving to attack the.

and to allow the progression of the. car. The ribs can be given a large step so that several of them attack the snow at a time in a continuous manner. They are preferably given a low height while giving a large surface area to the drum. The front part 40 (the drums is smooth and serves to compact the snow so as to harden it and allow the ribs to bite it in a more efficient manner.

The rear end is provided with a surface 41 without ribs, curved sharply upwards, Each rear drum 36 is similar to the front drum, and has a plain front part 4 2 curved sharply upwards, helical ribs. coidals 43 and a smooth rear part 44. This construction allows the machine to reverse.

The ribs of the front and rear drums are preferably part two by two of the same propeller. -A (embodiment of a drum is shown on fib. 6 in which the sleeves 115 and 116 are fixed to the drum and abut against the shoulders 117 of the shaft 18. Each sleeve is provided with a flange 118 which allows it to be bolted to the drum. The latter consists of one or more metal plates 120 reinforced by circular internal ribs 121. The wider end of the drum may have an opening 123 closed by a plate sheet 124.

The ribs 39 and 43 may have the shape shown in FIG. 6, or that of FIG. 12. In the latter case, each rib comprises a base 131, a core 132 and an enlarged head <B> 133. </B> The head 133 forms in the snow a much wider channel than the core <B> 132 </B> which in hard material does not attack the edges of the track so as to reduce the friction resistance. In addition, this arrangement eliminates the friction of the rib in the track, the friction said to the practical difficulty of establishing a rib having an exact helical shape both at its base and at its top. With this type of rib, only the enlarged head needs to be strictly a propeller.

The rib heads 133 may of course be pointed or have sharp edges, if desired.

Each shaft 18 carries a toothed wheel 50 connected by a chain 59 to a second toothed wheel 58 mounted on a frame provided with grooved flanges 53. These are fixed to lugs 51 of the caliper 15 by bolts 55 which pass through. in the grooves 54 of the flanges 53 (fig. 4) and allow the adjustment of the frame 52.

The frames are adjusted for chain tension by an adjusting screw 59a screwed through the, crossmember 60.1 of each of the brackets 15 and acts on a -part 52a of the frame 52. The screw 592 is locked a.piès adjustment by a nut 60. To reduce friction (each shaft <B> 18 </B> in bearings 17 and 20, ball bearings <B> 1V '</B> and 20a can be used. 7.7h and 20b ball bearings retained by the covers <B> 17th </B> and 20d receive the axial pressure from each shaft 18.

A fixed stop 20d prevents the cover 20c from unscrewing.

In a box 61 provided at the rear of the frame F are housed toothed wheels 62-63 (fig. 3) mounted on shafts 64 and 65. These are mounted in bearings 66.

A pinion 69 (fig. 3) meshes with the toothed wheels 62 and 6.3. It is mounted on a shaft 70 connected by a universal joint 71 to a shaft 74 itself connected by a universal joint 73 to the motor shaft 72. The shafts 64 and 65 are connected by universal joints 67-68 to shafts 75-77 themselves connected by universal joints <B> 76-78 </B> to shafts 57 on which the toothed wheels 58 are mounted.

Grout joints 79 may be provided at the points where they are needed. We can notice that the differential gear is not applicable to the car, because it would allow it to roll sideways. It should also be noted that the construction of the control members is such that there is a:.; Rand- free space between the drums.

We can have recourse to. different management systems. For example; the front end of the side member 4 bent downwards at 80 and reinforced at 81 may include a yoke 82 provided with a pin 84, which may, for example, consist of a bolt and on which a cross member 83 is mounted. This cross is braced by bars 85 connected to the spar 4 by a suitable open sleeve 86. Each end of the cross member 83 comprises a vertical sleeve 87 carrying a pin 88, the lower end of which has a yoke 89 articulated by a bolt 91 on a 90 shoe.

Each pin com carries a horizontal cross member 92 in the two ends of which pass rods 93-95 articulated on the shoe corresponding to the means cl'axes 94-96. Springs 97 mounted on rods 93-95 resiliently hold the pads in position. It is better to bend. the lower surface 98 of each pad. end to end - in a continuous way, to facilitate the turns and to provide this surface with a longitudinal rib 99. Thanks to the elastic mounting of the pads and the oscillating mounting of the drums, the car can easily overcome the unevenness of the ground.

The steering mechanism comprises a steering wheel 101 wedged on a rod 10t1 whose end in s' érieure is mounted in a suitable casing 10 ?. The.

rod 1 (10 controls by suitable means, for example, by worm screw and toothed sector, an arm (the direction 103 facing upwards as shown in, fig. 1, this arrangement giving to the members which constitute the steering system in the necessary space for their installation on the car The pins 88 are provided with arms 105 connected by a rod 106. One of the pins is provided with an arm 107 connected to the arm 103.

This link may include a lever 108 oscillating on an axis 109 mounted on a lug 110 of the frame F; the upper end of this lever is connected by a rod 111 to the arm 103, while the lower end is connected by a rod 112 ?, to the arm 107, suitable ball joints being provided at, places where they : have needed. This arrangement ensures suitable play and elasticity.

It can be observed that the drums can oscillate around an axis perpendicular to the axis of the shaft on which they are mounted, that they occupy a significant part of the length of the car and present between them a appreciable spacing.

Thanks to these ## itions, unevenness of the ground surface only causes a slight inclination of 1:,. cause (1 @ the car. the double oscillating movement of the steering mechanism favoring the obtaining of this result, as well as the. large bearing surface of the drums and their type of curvature. The operation of the assembly is shown on the fis. 10 and 11.

The drums are subjected to hard keys and strong transverse torsion. L: 1. The structure of the cllassis is suitable for enabling it to oppose a suitable resistance against these efforts. sa \ es interfere with the oscillating movement of the tnmbours.-
