Abstract

This is a very sensitive method for assessing the quality of separation layers. First, an aluminum-aluminum oxide-lead tunnel junction is created and its tunnel spectrum is measured. Then, the tunnel junction is covered with a separation layer and exposed to the test atmosphere for at least tens of hours. Its tunnel spectrum is measured again. By comparing the position and intensity of any newly formed spectral bands with the known positions of the spectral bands of the molecular bonds of the used separation layer and the test atmosphere according to the spectral atlas, it is determined whether unbound molecules from the test atmosphere and/or the separation layer have appeared in the tunnel junction. Based on this comparison, the suitability of the separation layer for use in the given test atmosphere is determined.

Description

The invention relates to a method for assessing the permeability of separating layers in determining their quality in the respective external atmosphere.

Separation layers are used in many applications in the manufacture of electronic components and in the protection of their surfaces from the effects of the external atmosphere. These layers are intended to prevent the diffusion of water molecules and other substances into the surface to be protected, since in some cases these molecules, which, for example, chemically bind, can substantially alter the properties of the component. The separation of the layer must therefore be impermeable to the molecules of the substances present in the atmosphere and at the same time they must not release substances which could possibly diffuse into the protected surface or chemically react with it and thus affect its properties.

The evaluation of the separating layers has so far been performed in conjunction with the surface to be protected such that the component to be protected is covered with the separating layer and the change in the selected property of the component is monitored as a function of time when exposed to the atmosphere. However, since a measurable change in the performance of a component may take some time, this evaluation method is lengthy and may not always be accurate.

This disadvantage is overcome by the method of evaluating the permeability of the separating layers according to the invention. Its essence is that an aluminum-aluminum oxide-lead tunnel is formed. The tunnel spectrum of this tunnel transition, which is the spectrum of non-asthmatic electron tunneling through a barrier, is measured. Then, the tunnel transition is overlaid with a separation layer and exposed in a test atmosphere, i.e., in the atmosphere in which the separation layer will be used, for at least tens of hours. The tunnel spectrum of the tunnel transition is then measured again. The two tunnel spectra are compared. If new spectral bands are formed, their position and intensity are compared with the known positions of the spectral bands of the molecular bonds of the separation layer and the test atmosphere, and the presence of na-diffused molecules from the test atmosphere and / or the separation layer is determined in the tunnel.

The result of this method is that it allows a very sensitive evaluation of the quality of the separation layers, since the sensitivity of tunnel spectroscopy is very high. In order for a new spectral band to appear in the tunnel spectrum, it is sufficient for a very small number of new molecules to enter the tunnel transition, substantially less than is necessary, for example, to form a monomolecular layer.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows an example of a tunnel transition for the spectral layer permeation evaluation method, Figure 2 shows the tunnel spectrum of a pure tunnel transition, and Figure 3 shows the spectrum of the tunnel transition covered with the separation layer being tested.

Bude-li skladován takovýto tunelový přechod v normální atmosféře, dojde k difúzi molekul vody -do- přechodu a v- tunelovém spektru se o-bjeví spektrální pás volných OH skupin v izolantu, případně vzroste intenzita pásu volných OH skupin. Stejně mohou do tunelového přechodu difundovat i molekuly řady organických látek ze separaění vrstvy 5, kterou se celý přechod pokryje. Příslušné spektrální pásy se pak opět objeví v- tunelovém spektru. The tunnel transition in the metal-insulator-metal structure has a vaporized aluminum lower electrode 1 on which a plasma layer 2 of an aluminum oxide insulating material is formed. The lead top electrode 3 is then steamed across. The washer 4 is glass. This tunnel transition has the property of allowing external doping of the transition. If such a tunnel transition is stored in a normal atmosphere, the water molecules will diffuse into the transition and the spectral band of the free OH groups in the insulator will appear in the tunnel spectrum or the band intensity of the free OH groups will increase. In the same way, molecules of a number of organic substances from the separation of layer 5 can be diffused into the tunnel transition, which covers the entire transition. The respective spectral bands then reappear in the tunnel spectrum.

By the method according to the invention, the quality and separation of the layers are evaluated by first measuring the tunnel spectrum of the pure tunnel transition, i.e. without the separation layer.

Only spectral bands characterizing the background spectrum of the pure tunnel transition and the spectrum of OH groups appear in the tunnel spectrum. Then the entire transition is covered with the separating layer 5 and is exposed in the respective atmosphere, that is, the atmosphere in which the separating layer 5 is to be used.

In this particular case, an atmosphere with 99% water was used and the separating layer 5 was a protective alkyl lacquer. The exposure time was 100 hours. The exposure time depends on the separation layer used and the environment in which it is exposed. In the case of diffusion of molecules of some substances into the tunnel transition, either from the atmosphere or from the separation layer 3, new spectral bands will appear in the newly measured tunnel spectrum, corresponding to the bonds between molecules and electrodes or insulator.

From the position and intensity of the newly formed spectral bands, by comparison with the molecular bonds of the atmosphere and the used separation layer according to the Atlas of Spectra, it is possible to deduce a number of new bonds and distinguish those resulting from contact of the separation layer 5 with the tunnel transition. molecules from the atmosphere at which the tunnel transition was exposed.

V tomto konkrétním případě zůstal spektrální pás OH-skupin nezměněn, z čehož plyne, že nodo-šlo k difúzi molekul vody z atmosféry. Avšak v tunelovém spektru tunelového přechodu pokrytého ochranných alskylovým lakem se objevily spektrální pásy odpovídající difúzi molekul ředidla tohoto ochranného alkylového laku.In this particular case, the spectral band of the OH groups remained unchanged, suggesting that water molecules were not diffused from the atmosphere. However, spectral bands corresponding to the diffusion of the solvent molecules of the protective alkyl lacquer have appeared in the tunnel spectrum of the tunnel transition covered with the protective alskyl lacquer.

Protože citlivost tunelové spektroskopie je velmi vysoká, neboť k objevení se nových spektrálních pásů stačí malé množství nových molekul, umožňuje tato metoda citlivé hodnocení kvality separačních vrstev.Since the sensitivity of tunneling spectroscopy is very high, since a small number of new molecules are sufficient to detect new spectral bands, this method allows a sensitive evaluation of the quality of the separation layers.
