The sludges are dissolved in excess phosphoric acid and the resulting solution of primary phosphates is passed through a strongly acidic cation exchanger, which captures the metal ions. The remaining acid is partly used to further dissolve the sludge and partly converted to insoluble calcium phosphate.

Description

The invention relates to a method for processing phosphating sludges, i.e. sludges that are generated during phosphating of metal objects.

The sludge that forms during the formation of phosphate layers on the surface of metal products sinks to the bottom of the phosphating bath and must be pumped out regularly. The main component of the sludge is tertiary - i.e. insoluble ferric and zinc phosphate, with traces of other heavy metals. This sludge currently represents a difficult waste that is taken to landfill. Therefore, it is not only not used in any way, but also represents an ecological hazard, especially contamination of groundwater.

This deficiency of the current state of the art is largely eliminated by the method of processing phosphatization sludge according to the invention. The essence of the invention lies in the fact that the phosphatization sludge is gradually dissolved in excess phosphoric acid, the resulting solution of primary phosphates is fed into an ion exchange column with a strongly acidic cation exchange resin and the effluent from the column is fed back to the sludge. Primary phosphates, formed by dissolving phosphatization sludge in excess phosphoric acid, are readily soluble. The acidic cation exchange resin retains some of the cations and the effluent from the cation exchange resin, enriched with free phosphoric acid, is fed back to the sludge. This increases the amount of free phosphoric acid, which is withdrawn from the circulation and neutralized with calcium hydroxide to form insoluble calcium phosphate, which can be advantageously used as a fertilizer. The cation exchange leachate can be treated in a conventional waste disposal station and a significantly smaller number of wheels containing only two metals can be disposed of.

The process according to the invention significantly reduces the volumes of problematic sludge after phosphatization and obtains a significant amount of phosphates, usable in agriculture as fertilizer. Since metal ions are separated separately in the form of hydrated oxides, it would be possible to use them in metallurgy. The process according to the invention does not require investment costs for the development or construction of new equipment. The washing of raw sludge can be carried out on a conventional filter, the cation exchange column is used from the regeneration of pickling phosphoric acid, the neutralization station is of a conventional type.

The invention is further explained in more detail by examples of its possible specific embodiment.

In a laboratory experiment, 10 g of dry phosphating sludge containing 22.4% iron and 8.05% zinc was mixed in 100 ml of distilled water and concentrated phosphoric acid was added dropwise with constant stirring until the sludge dissolved. The solution was passed through a strongly acidic cation exchanger Ostion KS, which is commonly used in the regeneration of pickling phosphoric acid. The solution after passing through the cation exchanger was analyzed and found to contain 11.4 g.l^ iron and 0.025 g.!**^ zinc.

The phosphating sludge was floated onto an acid-resistant filter. Excess water was expelled with compressed air and the sludge was washed with 10% phosphoric acid. The resulting solution was fed into an ion-exchange column with a strong acidic cation exchange, where zinc ions and part of the iron were retained. The effluent from the ion-exchange column was used back to rinse the sludge until all the sludge was dissolved. Another batch of sludge was floated onto the filter, part of the rinsing acid was pumped off and processed into calcium phosphate, the rest was used to dissolve this next batch of sludge. Since the concentration of phosphoric acid increases during this process, it must be diluted with water as needed to a basic concentration of approximately 10%. More than 90% of their phosphorus content was recovered from the phosphating sludge.

The invention can also be used for the treatment of sludges generated during the neutralization of wastewater after phosphatization.
